Anyone use just a trackball mouse as trackball?
« on: August 09, 2005, 09:07:27 pm »
Hi,

I have a trackball mouse here that isnt being used for anything. I was thinking about making it into a track ball for my arcade machine.

Would this work and has anyone done this before?

I use a logitech trackball mouse as a temporary solution (sitting on top of my panel) until I can get around to mounting my 3" Golden Tee type trackball.  It works okay as a temp solution, but I wouldn't use it as my permanent trackball.

I am not really that fused about having a wizbang trackball as I only use it for Golden tee and thats usually only after a few bears with the guys before heading out.

Hmm will pick one up for $10 and see how it goes.

Cheers

I use one in my machine.

Although I don't really play any trackball games besides Centipede. Works fine as far as I'm concerned. Although I should take a picture with my new trackball in, switched out my brown trackball with a black cue ball, goes a lot better with my buttons.

I might try and get one like you had, I am in no hurry for it so can sit out and wait for a bargain!

I have a 3" Genius Kidsball trackball.  It works fine, but I also only play Centipede with it.

Golden Tee is where a PC trackball really fails to achieve greatness.

An arcade trackball is designed to keep rolling when pushed, where as a PC one is designed to NOT do that. It will have more resistance, and will come to a stop MUCH faster than an arcade one would, which I figure means a worse swing in Golden Tee.

I do not speak from experience though, as I have no trackball in mine, but that is the gist of what I get from reading about the subject.

much like the above user I plan on Modifying the trackball.

Removing the case, resisters etc and just remounting the trackball inards and trackball on my CP. I may later hook it up to microswitches if the need arrises

Yeah, but the rollers will still be PC trackball rollers.

It is not the case that slows it down, but the bearings/rollers that the ball rolls on.

I guess it would be a low cost solution anyway, so if it doesn't work out all that well, you wouldn't be down all that much money, and an arcade trackball could then still be an option.

I am curious to hear how it works out for you, if you choose to do it.

thats kind of the hope.

The mrs is screaming atme  because the $500 project is closer to $700 so far :D

I also bought a PSX controller to USB convertor so that I will be able to use my PSX joybads directly on my arcade machine, I am trying to get the greatest range of controllers for the lowest cost essentially
