What is better and why (LS-30 round vs octagonal)?
« on: August 09, 2005, 06:09:42 pm »
Ok, I have seen the 12 position LS-30 -type joysticks have a round yellow handle and some have an octagonal yellow handle?

1) Do the joysticks play the same way?

2) Is there any advantage between one type over the other (ie: more reliable, sturdy, working better, etc..)?

3) Are both the round and octagonal joysticks made by the same company?

4) Can both types be used by Druin's interface board?

Please explain ... thanks

I can't speak for the inner workings of the joysticks, but I would think the octagonal ones would be easier to turn. Of course, they'd probably also be incredibly awkward in non-rotary games.

Yes!  They will feel a little different, of course, but they both do pretty much the same thing.

2) Is there any advantage between one type over the other (ie: more reliable, sturdy, working better, etc..)?

Not that I know of, other than the look and feel of the grip.  I don't actually own the Wico type, though.

3) Are both the round and octagonal joysticks made by the same company?

Nope.  Octagonal ones are SNK LS-30s, which were actually manufactured by Semitsu.  Round, barrel shaped ones came on Data East Machines, and were made by Wico.  Wico also made a balltop model.

4) Can both types be used by Druin's interface board?

Yes!  And so can the ones you may see with the black pear-top handle- those are the Happ varietiy, and the only ones you can still buy new.  The others you'll have to score on ebay.

Are the octagonal ones more valuable on Ebay then the round ones?

Just for clarification (and the fact it's not clear which round ones you are talking about) there are 3 yellow 12-position rotary controls (Actually more, but for the sake of argument let's say 3)

Ocatagonal - LS-30
Cylindrical - Wico or Data East
Ball - Wico (Pretty much like a Wico 8-way with the grommet, but has a rotary control as well)

Better is a user opinion, so some say this some say that.
More valuable on EBAY, people pay weird prices for lots of things on EBAY.

No need to be sorry, I just wasn't sure which ones you were talking about.

The octagonal ones are the ones most people are probably familar with.
I'm not sure about the cylindrical ones.

Paige likes the Wico/Data East's, Spidermonkey likes the SNK's.  If it were me (and someday it maybe will be, I hope) - I'd look for the SNK's.
