Help: trackball trouble in Major Havoc.
« on: December 31, 2002, 03:37:08 am »
I'm sure this has been covered before, but my search yielded nothing so here goes...

I have a hacked Comp USA trackball in my cab.  And when I try to use it to play Major Havoc (mame), the character on screen (is he the titular Major Hovoc??) moves in a very stuttery-jerky way... I realize this is because when I spin the trackball too fast it basically does a WRAPAROUND and causes the character to hesitate... And then I die.

My question is how do I fix it? Is this just a function of my mouse driver? (standard Microsoft) Or is there a hardware issue I'm missing? Or something in the mame set-up? Would it help if I went with a happs trackball and an OSCAR interface?

Any help greatly appreaciated...
Bluepoint.

You can adjust the sensativity of the trackball in mame.  Press 'tab' while in game and go to the analog settings.  Lower sensativity, and rates.

Also,  you may want to go into the control panel, and under 'Mouse',  slow down the mouse pointer speed.

The answer depends on if the spin is happening in the hardware or software.  PC trackballs are designed for pinpoint control, not spinning; they have tiny little encoder wheels.

Reduce the sensitivity of the analog controls in Major Havoc to something very low.  If the stuttering goes away, the trackball was spinning faster than a real Major Havoc trackball; adjust to taste.  If he still stutters, the problem is in the trackball.

With my trackball hack, I had to remove the encoders and break out lots of the little teeth to physically reduce the sensitivity.

Which model of trackball are you using?  You'll definately want to hear from someone using the same model as you...

Reduced sensitivity to 16% in mame... Works now...

Thanks again everyone!

P.S. Trackball = generic COMP USA model.
