Video game side-art on a car?
« on: August 05, 2005, 09:13:25 pm »
Just occurred to me it could be neat to apply video game side-art to the doors or hood of a car. Has it been done?
 ;D

That depends. You gonna pop the trunk and have a control panel and monitor swing out?

It wouldn't be cheap, but I totally do that!

I drive a truck, though. However it DOES have a toolbox on the back. I could do a flip top lid to uncoiver a monitor with a pull-out control panel drawer.

OH! I've got it. How about a hinged hard-top bed cover the swings up to unveil a monitor, with the tailgate folding down to reveal the control panel.

The only two things that would prevent you from doing this well are:

1) The original sideart wasn't designed to be in the sun.
The ink used on most of the sideart will fade quickly when exposed to UV.
Applying a UV-blocking clear overlam MIGHT help this; but I'm not sure, given the instability of the ink itself.

2) The original sideart has no protection on it.
In addition to the UV protection needed above, the art would also need to be protected against physical damage.
A 2 mil polyester overlam would take care of this pretty easily.
If it was UV-blocking as well, you could kill two birds with one stone.

Alot of the repro sideart being produced should be using inks that are more UV stable, so a quick overlam should make them work for applications like this.

I didn't think it'd be possible to have something that screamed "I'M A NERD!" more than a Linux penguin sticker on a car.

I was wrong.  ;D

Just get it printed by these folks:

They do vehicle graphics as inexpensively as $9/sq ft

Oh, I'd never recommend using arcade sideart. You would need something heavier duty than that.

Keep in mind, the only kinds of cars I can picture arcade side-art on are old ghetto beaters anyways.  ;D

Any place that offers auto wraps could take whatever artwork you give them and put it on the car.

It doesn't have to be actually arcade "side art". You would just have the wrap designed to look like it.

If I had a ricer I'd put the Tempest or Space Invaders side art on it.

That would look pretty cool

Tempest art would definitely look nice!  ;D I would design it somehow so the main alien creature with the claw was right smack in the middle of the hood.

I saw a "pimped out" (using the term, LOOOSELY...) Honda with I believe Transformers Decepticon logos all over the hood, in ascending sizes.

I think they were peel and stick vinyl.

I'd really love to see a little Space Invader or something on the back of a BMW or Benz -- that would be awesome!

Rather than trying to use actual arcade graphics, I'd think incorperating the artwork style into a custom paint job would come off better.

On the other hand,  it'd be cool to see Jesse & co do car/cab hybrid on Monster Garage, or O.C.C. do an arcade themed bike for American Chopper.
