Pic of my near completed cab
« on: December 29, 2002, 08:23:09 pm »
Here is a pic of my near completed cab.  Just thought I would share my work with all.  Only thing left to do is install the monitor bezel and finish the marquee.

Yeah the picture is dark.  The cab is in my basement so there isn't much lighting.  I'm in the process of making a site so I'll have plenty of better pics of this cab and the other one I am fixing up.  Thanks for the thumbs up tho.

Your artwork is awsome. Why is it we always get stuck in the basement? ;)

Very sweet cab.  Might I ask what the width is of your CP?  I'm trying to decide my CP size/layout at the moment and any info I can get would be great!!

Again it's a great looking cab and the artwork is niiiiiice :)

CP is 48"x20".  Seems pretty big when you think about it but I am glad I went with this size.  It feels perfect with 4 people playing on it.  I'd rather have it too big then too small.  The cp is also conneted to the cab with velcro.  That stuff is amazing. :)

Wow, very very nice work.  How big's the tv/monitor in that thing?  And what kind while you're at it *connections in back/convertors/scan convertors*  I really like how it looks.  Two more quick questions:
A: how thick is that plexi, or is that lexan?
B: what kind of material did you use underneath the plexi?  If you used wood, did you route it first so that the joysticks would be far enough up?

Very nice design. What plans did you follow? doesn't look like the popular LuSiD design (which I never completely liked b.t.w.). Do you have a link to the plans?

Very nice!  It reminds me strongly of my cabinet ( http://members.cox.net/nebrunner ) but with the addition of the far left and far right controls for Gauntlet.  I am jealous about those, I wish my control panel had enough room for them but it just wasn't possible without major rebuilding of the cabinet.

The one thing it looks like you are missing is the "run" buttons on P1 and P2 for Mortal Kombat 3.

I cant answer for MADK but from what I can guess.....
the plexi looks like 1/8 thickness and its 1/2 wood and he didnt have to route.
am i correct madk(my guesses are pretty good ehh?)?

It's a 27" Sansui TV from Best Buy.  Got it for a good $199.99.  Right now I'm using my GF4TI4600 for tv out but will use an ATI card when I acutally build a dedicated system for the cab.

Quote

The lexan is 1/4"  (Nice try snakeee)

Quote

The top of the cp is actually made out of 1/2" ply wood while the rest of the cab is made out of mdf.   Wood + plexi = 3/4" which give the sticks an excellent height.

Very nice design. What plans did you follow?

I actually drew up the plans myself.  It's really easy and I don't know why more people freak out over plans.  We've all played and seen hundreds of cabs.  Once I get my site up and running I'll draw up the plans.

Quote
what size are that speakers (4", 5", 6") and what brand????????

5" Thump I believe is the brand.  Got them cheap at Meijers.  (Local superstore in MI).  I've got them hooked up to an old set of Altec Lansing speakers.  Great sound quality...the thing really bumps.

The one thing it looks like you are missing is the "run" buttons on P1 and P2 for Mortal Kombat 3.

P1 & 2 are in the middle.  No need for 6 buttons on 4 players games....just a waste.

Ok I think that answered all the questions. :)  Thanks for the posts guys.  The site will be up in a matter of weeks...(Gotta get some pics developed and scanned)

Here is another pic...

I did manage to get the bezel perfected last night...now I only have to touch up my t-molding (I really f'ed it up).  No one else can really tell but I am a perfetionist.  I also got my dad to cut a sheet of real glass to put over the monitor...it looks sooooooo sweet now.  Almost done!!!

Isn't Meijer a great store?  ;D Just kidding, not that it isn't a great store but I'm a little biased since I work for them.

Meijer is a great store.  My wife gets goose bumps whenever she gets the Meijer ads in the mail.  :)

:o Warning - way way off topic alert  :o

Is it just a thing that we people in Michigan do or is this something nation wide.  I noticed that MADK called the store "Meijers" with an s.  Most people I know use this same plural on store names.  Like "I bought it a KMARTs" or "Lets go to Penney's" when the names of these stores are Meijer, KMART, and JCPenney with the s on the end.
I always wondered if this was some kind of regional weirdness
What would happen if the whole world farted at the same time?

Looks good.  I'm still debating what to do about a 4-player setup for my cab.  I guess I'll give it more thought when I actually have 4 people over...

Just let the t-molding go man!  I promise, in a few weeks, you'll never notice (I'm a perfectionist too!  But if I let it get the best of me, I'd STILL be messing with the marquee and wasting money on new t-molding, lexan etc...  ;) )  It'll get a bit scuffed up when you move anyway...but that's life...  :-\

Ha Thanks for the advice.  The molding has serisouly been driving me crazy.  My girlfriend is like "it looks perfect" and I'm like "NOOOOOOO!".  :)  I think after my work today is done I'll promise myself to never touch it again.

BTW-I worked at MeijerS for 2 years.  It's like we are brothers or something. :)

My T-molding install was a freaking NIGHTMARE.  There was a horrific incident with a table saw and a hot glue gun that would terrify you guys, but I won't get in to that here.  :)

It took me 3 tries and I am still not happy with it, but knowing how much of a pain it was, I finally got it to "good enough" and left it there.

If your girlfriend thinks it looks good, then take her advice and just let it be.

Hehe..as a native Michigander living in Boston, I had to reply to this... ;D
It certainly seems like a regional thing (just as "Pop" vs "Soda"), since people from the "Mitten" seem to be the only ones that add the "S" to brand names...

For years I had to hear about my grandfathers job a FORDS!! It drove me nuts..but I always assumed they were saying it as "Mr. Fords Place" or "Mr. Meijers Store"...etc...

Now, to get back on topic...NICE CAB!

Here (west coast, USA) some stores get the 's', others don't.  Lucky (not around anymore) and Penny always get the 's', KMART doesn't (locally, at least), and "J.C. Penny" sometimes does.  I've wondered about this for years, and my current theorey is 's's are added to add emphasis to the last syllable for short names ending with a dropping last syllable. *shrug*  Just speculating, and don't know know to pronouce "Meijer" to see if it fits my guess.

Had to comment on this one.... I'm in WV and I find it ridiculous how OH has to have a different name for all of it's stores.... I'm not talking a "s" either......

Example  Here it's "The Dollar Store" there it's "Dollar Tree"  wtf?  Ok even wierder... now all of the new dollar stores in this area are called Dollar Tree but if you go to OH all of newly opened Dollar Stores are Called The Dollar Store.  These are the same companys as the logo looks the same.

OH does this for practically every store out there....  I just can't think of any specific examples right now as the names are totally different in most cases.

so are they insaine?  What about branding?  Aren't you supposed to keep a store's name nationally recognizable?

lightly OT to the OT tip...

besides the "s" debate... which seems somewhat regional...

What about older folks putting "the" in front of chain stores, like, "I'm going to "The Walmart"" or "The Stop and Shop" or "The Target"

something that bothers me (well only a little)...  its kinda subtle when reading as it seems grammatically ok... but slightly redundant... it's the difference between "going to THE store..." and "going to walmart..." and "going to TheWalmart"

*shrug* (but you knew that was coming, right?)

Such a sweet cab madk! Are you getting a website up soon? Are those X-arcade joysticks and buttons? If so, how do you like them?

In regards to company names, my wife and I like to give Target a French pronunciation (Tar-jhay) and I've heard JcPenney called Jacque Penoit (Pen-waa). I had a teacher in college who liked to call Gottschalks "Got Sucks". He used to constantly referred to local towns called Crescent City as "Crescent $hitty" and Fortuna as "Fartuna". Needless to say, he was a character.

I have that 27" Sansui in my cab - let me know if yours has a bit of a color ghosting problems with reds and a bit less with blues... Mine seems to do that, for example, in DKong, the words "high score" at the top are repeated off to the right and down about 1/4". The blues do the same, but only on parts of the screen. Some convergence thing, I guess. (I'm using the SVideo input, with a All In Wonder Radeon 8500DV - a fantasic card!)

Nope all the components came from Happs and the cp was built from scratch.

NICE CAB! awesome graphics, too. I like the CP immensely.

To the OT crowd: I have lived in many different states on the east coast(though not in MI) but I have never heard of Meijers. Is that like software etc or funcoland?  Only in MI? Sounds like a cool place though, especially if so many of you worked there at one point.  Being from PA, a lot of let's say, rural, people say things like " we're goin' to walmart, wanna come with?"  I always feel like the sentence should be finished somehow.  And I feel I must defend OH's honor for some silly reason(I did just move to Cleveland   :-\  ) The name changes happen all over the country not just here in ...cold, frigid OH.

I have never heard of Meijers. Is that like software etc or funcoland?  Only in MI? Sounds like a cool place though, especially if so many of you worked there at one point.
Meijer is like a super Walmart. We started as a grocery store and we were doing  one stop shopping with the super store concept long before Walmart started doing it. We have 153 stores in 5 states, MI, IN, OH, KY, and IL. www.meijer.com
My statements are my own opinions. They have the value that the reader gives them. My opinion of my opinion varies between foolish and brilliant and these opinions often change with new information.

Meijer is home.
j/k  It is a nice store though.

They have been in buisness as long as I can remember...anything(I'll be 26 this year.)

There is a store called "Fred Meyer" in other parts of the country, its the same concept.

Maybe it's just my imagination, but does it seem like there's a lot of people from Michigan in the MAME community?  (myself being one of them)

Also, on the subject of Mejier(s)... I've noticed that sometimes people will even call it Meijers's (with a double 's' sound).  Although this is usually done as a joke.  :)

Had to comment on this one.... I'm in WV and I find it ridiculous how OH has to have a different name for all of it's stores.... I'm not talking a "s" either......
...

Ah, you are in WV too?  Now I understand why you make so many negative posts... j/k!

Absolutely stunning. Much respect. I have a question on your artwork choice for the control panel. Why did you go with Capcom vs SNK2 art? Do you have a Dreamcast in there too? I ask because it is my plan to put a MAME PC for the classics and a Dreamcast for the newer fighting games in my cabinet.

I'm just a huge CvSNK fan.  We created the CP art before creating the marquee.  I kinda wish I woulda waited so I coulda added the custom capcom font to the CP art.  Oh well...i think it looks dope either way.
