Yessir... looks like you got yourself a nice little tabletop cab going there!   :o

Seriously though, Good going!  I take it you're either single, have a nice game room or your wife is awesome.

Good luck finishing the cab!  I hear starting the cab is half the battle and finishing the cab is the other 4.6 halves of the battle. :)

Mr. Papercut, this is a 2 seater sit down cab.  And yes my wife is awesome, although she wont let me do another  :'(  The size of this thing is probably 3 times a regular upright. 7 sheets of MDF so far and 3/4 done with construction process.  Most difficult part is designing so it can be broken down to fit through a regular size door.

Can I have some of what you're smoking?

Damn, thats gonna be a big fugger! Have you decided on a wheel yet? What are you goin to be playing primarily. PC? MAME? Console? All 3?

ALso, what monitors are you going to use? I'd think for a cab like that, you wouldne want to go with anything less than 33".  ;) ;D

For the monitors I am actually using 2 27 inch TVs.  They will be mounted side by side  like many are.  I have a PS2 that will be primary until I can get my PC to stop freaking out and am able to "MAME" it.  (video card problems)

The wheels I am using are both Logitech PROs I believe.  I originally had them design to be lowered from above by an arm but the angles were not coming out right.  The wheels will be mounted to both "boxes" in the pictures and be removable when not playing a driver.

I think one of the best features on this is 5.1 upgradable to 7.1 sound.  The holes on the back of the picture are for speakers, 2 - 6 inch midbass.  At the very top of the middle console there is a cutout for a 5 1/4  and tweeter, ( you cant see that part)   There are wires coming out of the boxes to connect to 2 Bass shakers that I installed in the seats.  Hard to see but the black box thing under a speaker hole is a panel amp that I rewired to power the shakers.

I actually addressed this before.  The cab can be broken down to fit through doors, that was the most challenging design piece.  To be honest it will fit through a 28 inch door.  Thanks for the concern and attempt to rain on my parade   ;D

Wow, this is going to be cool! Don't think I'd even bother with MAME on it. For me, driving games are the low point of MAME, because the good later ones all play like dogs. A console would probably be well suited for this. I guess the downside is that since you have 2 monitors and don't want to play split screen, you might need 2 of them ???

Two PC's would probably be my choice, since there are just a ton of good multiplayer games like Live For Speed (not a typo). That one is real cool, since you can play 2 up, put the cab on the net and have big multiplayer races. I have 3 PC's and wheel/pedal combo's on my network, and we have a great time with Live For Speed.
Pretty fast machines with good video cards are kind of expensive though. The good thing about MAME is not needing all that. This might be one cab where the price of extra's snowballs way beyond expectations. Very cool project though! There are still some good older PC titles if you don't want to go with high end machines. Viper Racing and Sports Car GT come immediately to mind!

Edit to add: I think I'd also set it up so it'd be configurable to flight sims and Mechwarrior games. Something about Mech games and cockpits that go great together! :)

I thought about the flight Sim games as well as mechwarrior types.  I have never been into either of them.  I have thought about getting a flight stick just to have and a couple games too.  Maybe I will eventually like them.  About the TVs, I have a splitter that will allow me to run the PS2 and split the screens.

On the back of the entire cab I am also going to have 2 more controller ports if a 4 player game is played.

Have been kind of stuck on what to call it though.  Thought about the Dream Machine.  My wife says to call it the widowmaker  because I am spending so much time on it and she is not into the build process.  Shoot me some ideas.

Just an idea:

If you decide to go the console route for driving/sim games, might I suggest getting 2 Xboxs or PS2s and using a system link for going head-to-head? This will allow both players to have their own dedicated screens instead of having to "share" the game with half of the screen being taken up by the other player's car/whatever. Just splitting the signal coming from a console to 2 tvs won't give each player his own view since there is no way to divide up  the video signal coming from a console into "player 1" and "player 2".

Only a suggestion.

good idea, I am having some random "disc read error" messages already with my PS2.  I may have to open her up.  When does the PS3 come out?  I might set up the system so that can be added on later.  Not to tough since there really isn't anything that is needed to prepare for that, just space.

I noticed when my buddy and I play Project Gotham and other split screen games on the XBox that it causes a pretty noticable frame rate hit. Do you see that with the PS2 games? Halo is the only other split screen game we played on the XBox, and it got pretty klunky too.

I have a tough time when driving games dip below about 25fps, so I think I'd want to wire up two consoles. A project like yours was one of the first ones I considered when I got a  house, but unfortunately I still don't have the space. Even playing racing games side by side on the 3 machines I have is a total blast. Still has me thinking about re-arranging the room and current MAME cab to make room!  :D

the splitter I have will divide the signal from the PS2 into 2 signals and amplifies it as well.  It wont, however, split the 1 player on one TV and the 2nd on the other.  I think I misspoke earlier.

No, I understand what you were getting at. I just think that if you're goin o go through all this trouble, you might as well spend the extra $100 on another xbox s each plyer can have teir own dedicated screen. If you want, PM me and I'll let you in on a few Xbox modding secrets.  :police:

Never modded a PS2, but to be honest, the only thing those modships unlock are DVD/Game regions. You'll have to do some research on whether or not the games you want to play can be system linked.

well, that's easy, Gran Tourismo, the perfect game for a cab (as long as you play it in arcade mode) is splittable to up to 6 Playstations

(may I also suggest the newest version of the driving force pro from logitech, its' expensive, but GT4 supports 900 degree steering...yeah,  like your real car, and that steering set AFAIK is the only one to support it)

ps. don't worry, for your older racing games, the Driving force pro automatically switches back to 280 degree or whatever if you put in a game that doesn't support 900

Well, then he'd have to build 3 more of these 2 seaters for the full effect!  (Better just start framing up an addition to the house :) ).

I think you better bold the fact that you've already figured out the whole breaking it down to fit in doors and make it move easier as I can see a lot of people are going to ask the same question over and over.

Damn - back off. I missed the one tiny little sentence where he typed that. If you look at the pretty pictures, (which look awesome) it looks like a whole hell of a lot of screws. Is that how you break it down, spend 8 hours unscrewing? Just trying to help a brotha out!

NICE ONE !!!!.....  ;) ;D ;D ;)

when I look at your first pic... I see you have 8 wheels on the bottom...

what is the load capacity on those ?? usually 1 wheel have about 100 lb... 8 wheels can only hold 800... and your cab seems like it'll be MASSIVE !!!... with a 200 lb TV, 7 MDF boards, and all the stuffs there, and then add 2 adults (150 - 200 lbs each) sitting there and shaking and stepping....  the weight distribution might not be even...
(also your ground might not be completely even and put more weight on some wheels....)

I would advise add some more wheels to share the weight....

now... when can you do 1 for me ??
 ;D ;)

seriously... VERY WELL DONE !!!... keep the pics coming !!...
Another Brilliant mind ruined by education....  :p

Can you give me any hints as to how this monstrosity breaks down into pieces small enough to fit through a 28" doorway?  What kind of latching mechanism are you using to clamp them back together once you move the cabinet pieces inside?  I'm planning a nintendo vs style cabinet, and breaking it in two down the middle would help in lugging it around.

Okie doke, since last post I haven't been able to work on it at all    :'(  little one on the way and many things on the honey do list.  But to answer your question.  I have stood and stared at my design for hours trying to figure out how to get it all broken apart and fit through a door.  Now keep in mind it is still very heavy but that is what we pay movers for right!  This picture can help as well.  When looking at it the middle console can be removed by sliding out toward where the TVs and electronics will be (not built yet).  The back part where you can see the cut outs for speakers and the panel amp can be slid up and off.  Actually that back part is not that heavy.  The bottom is the bia bia.  With all the 2x4 and mdf it is very heavy and awkward.  It will just scrape through a regular doorway.  The design for the tv part is almost like a traditional cab only twice as wide.  It will be attached by L brackets to supports that will go into the middle console for stability and holding up the weight of the TVs.  Hope this helps with how it breaks down.  My auto notification turned off for this topic so I haven't looked for a while.

Still need help on some names though.  That is for the cab not the little one on the way.

Each wheel will hold 250 lbs.  I was going to say where I got them because they are small when compared to others that can handle that load.  I cant remember seems like a year ago when I bought them.  That a freakin' ton! (bad pun intended)  I think I will still be pushing the limits or getting close.  I do have bolts underneath that are for stops.  Couldn't find any that I liked and couldn't get them on the wheels for the weight I wanted.

Thinking about one of these too.  Might mount them on the sides of the seats or on the back.  Need to research more to make sure will work.  Went to Dave and Busters last weekend, probably a big financial mistake!  link is for the webpage and picture is of the product.  It is awesome!

So let me get this str8 u built this up this far and haven't made a 100% solid plan of taking it apart  :o

Thats just not right.

I could understand maybe having an idea then modifying it once you've gotten started.  but sizing it up after its been built?  Does the wife know your going to spend money to have someone else move it?  hopefully I have misunderstood your post.

edit: not to be totally negative.  thats one F'N COOL cab and breakdown issues aside it's going to be fun as hell playing.

No no no.  I have planned how to take it apart already.  It took a while to figure out how to make it a "breakdown" cab.  I was also referencing if I have to move or something then the movers will do it, not me.  It will break down into 4 main pieces.

This little shmo is keeping the productivity to an alltime low.  Really havent progressed in the assembly, just seem to be buying more stuff for it.  I also had to refinish a dresser and make a couple nightstands.  Should only be a couple more weeks before I can get back to it.  I will post then.  Thanks again for the interest.  It should be interesting when done.

Congrats!

We'll check back in about 10 years.  ;D
Mine is about a year old, and I'm still waiting for free time to occur in blocks of more than about 15 minutes. Usually when I have an afternoon to myself (about every two months), cab building is postponed by repairing things in the house that have fallen apart.

Wouldn't trade it for anything, but kids are a huge black hole, timewise.

I apologize to everyone for the delay on this cab, I have not done squat for so long on it.  Have been brainstorming on a couple of names and paint schemes.  I would take any ideas for that matter.  Wifey keeps adding to her list of things she wants me to do but i did persuade her into letting me get a Delta unisaw!!!! Have yet to even fire that up yet.  I promise, progress will be made shortly, I will put my foot down!!  (ever so lightly  :'(    )

What does anyone think about "Midnight Run"  Trying to design something for the back, it is pretty damn big.  Midnight Run across the top in some foggy type.  Going across the bottom left to right a barely noticeable road.  Bottom left you can see the front 1/2 of an old muscle car, Mustang GT500.  Keep the ideas coming I appreciate it.

very cool stuff.  I wonder if you could hack a force-feedback joystick to smack behind the seats behind each player ala that 2-seat driving game where you can shoot at the other players (crap! forgot its name).

Actually already done.  If you look way back at the beginning I have two seats from a Toyota Supra.  I dismantled the seat and installed a Aurora Bass shaker Pro in each.  On another picture you can see 2 speaker cutouts and there is also a black box, not sure if visible from the picture, that is a home subwoofer amp I purchased from parts express.  This will power the 2 bass shakers.  All the sound will be powered by a JVC 5.1 receiver I picked up a while back, got it dirt cheap on ebay.

Only thing I haven't figured out yet is how to get split screens.  Little talk earlier in the thread but still unsure if it can be done.  I want each TV to show only their side on a driver game or other capable games but I don't want to buy another PS2.  I will try to add MAME to this cab as well.  Upgraded our home computer.  I have a piece of crap slim line Gateway that has been nothing but problems.  Doesn't want to give up its own internal video card for the new one I installed.

Ah - yeah that would give a similar effect, though Road Riot 4WD actually had force-feedback solenoid knocker dealios that would smack wood right behind your seat ala a pinball game getting free games.  Maybe Mame doesn't support what I was thinking of...

Having re-read your post title, I suddenly had a (perhaps even more insane) idea for anyone looking for what to do in their next project:  Someone should see about building the *biggest* standard upright cab they can.  Like have the CP at chest-height and a 27" monitor in there to make you feel like you're 12 again.  Everything to scale bigger than life (bigger joysticks, buttons even?)!  I saw a few miniature cabinets people have made which are tabletop or smaller (e.g. MameMaster's)... this could be the opposite.    Could be an excellent optical illusion if anyone has the ceilings high enough to keep it (not an option for those of us whose game room is relegated to the basement)

Update -

I have started on the project again.  So far I have constructed most of the outer shell for the "front" which will hold the tvs and most electronics.  I have also doubled the number of casters for the base, figured I would do it now before assembly.  A little overkill, each caster is rated for 200lbs and I now have 22 of them.

I was able to get a couple more sheets of MDF and finished the bottom support for the TVs.  Rather big moment seeing it come together for rough form.  Only the front panels to cover the TVs, kickboards, the back of the front portion and marquee housing and construction will be complete.  Next step will be the wiring process.  I placed my seats back in just to get a good feel and make sure everything is layed out correctly.  Pretty dust since they have been sitting for about 6 months.

In these pictures you can see the main control switches in the middle console.  Only one of them inserted now but will look the exact same covering those three circle holes on the right.  When I placed the top on I did notice I angled the underneath portion of my middle console to far back and it way under the TV support.  I may just move the center channel and place it in between the two TVs.  Or I might just leave it alone, it probably wont matter.  On the top of the front portion in between the two speaker boxes I will place the receiver and hide it with a marquee in front.  This will be hinged so if need be I can get at the receiver easily.

I have also decided to call the cabinet the Widowmaker.  I will go with a Black Widow theme and run with the hourglass pictures for a few areas.  Wanting to have some of the attached pictures included in the design but open to any and all sugestions.

Looks great.  The name is very fitting, since most wives would probably kill their husbands for building something like this.  Again it looks great.

For artwork ideas: I really like the spider logo. Imagine artwork with a car with the widowmaker logo on the hood. Oh, and you got to have flames on that cab. And spider's silk. Hmm, I can picture that cab in my head now  ;D

I noticed the marquee area is split in 3 sections. Are you planning to add
 "player 1" | "Widow Maker" |"player 2"
(like the Daytona cabs) marquees there?

on the marquee, the two outside boxes are for speakers.  2 6 1/5 inch midbass will find their home in both enclosures.  The middle is where the marquee will go.  I was thinking about Widowmaker in a silvery font with some web in the background.  This is an area I have no idea how to do so I would love any help!

You hit the nail on the head, that is exactly how the name was derived.  I was going to call this midnight run and my wife said to call it the widowmaker because if you spend any more time on this tonight that is what you will be doing!

Most of the developments have been to insignificant to update with pics.  Mostly covering screw holes, cutting access holes for wiring and securing the pieces to the main frame.  A lot of meetings lately so I haven't progressed as quickly as I would like.  Usually when I get a reply to this topic it gets me fired up and more progress follows.  Not really looking forward to routing all the slots for T-molding.  Getting very close to that step.  Like always, any and all comments are welcome.  Since this is my first cab, I am just a little newbie taking on a mountain of a project.  Why go small yaknow?

I am guessing you are talking about shifting controls?  Since this cab will later have MAME added the main system will be a PS2 and 2 Logitech Steering wheels with padel shifting.  The wheels will be removable for non-driving games.

Non driving games?? With a cab like that, what else do you intend to play on it? I thought you were going for a driving/flying cockpit.  ???

This is a driving cockpit but I will also have it set up for shooting games with a total of 4 guns.  My main system (PS2) will be in the cabinet so any other game you want to play will be available.  Just like many others that use gaming seats, I have a more extravagant one.

I see. The reason I asked was because I noticed there was a console on the right hand side for one of the players, and the other player didn't have a console. So it's more like a front seat in 1 car, than 2 drivers seats out of 2 different cars.

I assumed that some games required a shifter and thought that one of the players would have to shift with their left hand.

Middle console made of 2 pieces of MDF, planed and sanded by hand for contour.  I will pad and cover with leather or vinyl.  Will also use 2 stop hinges and a slide hinge for opening and also so it wont break off.

This section is for the rear marquee.  If you can see the little slot at the top I will slide the lexan into the slot trapping the art in the "sleeve"

last one for this step.  This piece is the front panel that goes over the tvs in front.  This is removable as well.  I will be using 20 or so hex bolts with screw sleeves to hold in place.  One tv actually projects out about 1/4 inch so I had to contour the back of the panel to fit.

One question here, should I use smoke plexi/lexan or just use clear?  Very unsure what to use at this moment.  Give me opinions please.

You gotta love all that damn bondo covering the screw holes.  Do I go overboard or what?!?!

Looks amazing !!!
You should get some push button switches that you need to put a key in to turn. You could use them as the start button. It would be like starting a car !
I got one on my cab for free quarters. You put the key in the button, turn it right and press in. Would be awesome !!!!

Cant wait to see this one done.

where did you get the switch?  I could not find one that would allow me to do that.  Or maybe I was trying to wire it incorrectly.  I had purchased a key switch from Parts express but it was rated at 2 amps.  I had thought about using it as the Master switch for the system, turn it on and the system has power.

Couple questions for you. what is the width of the cabinet? Also, what is the width of the center console? Where are you going to put the PS2's? And lastly what are you plans on mounting the steering wheels?

This looks amazing. Keep the great pics coming. :notworthy:

The steering wheels will be mounted on pipe that will slide into 3 slots.  They will be located directly in front of the boxes the seats will be attached to.  You can get a better look at the location by viewing reply #78 & 79.  I want the whole steering wheel mount to be removable if not a driving sim.

The PS2 will be mounted behind the #1 Driver seat.  Reply #30 has a good picture for that view.

The width of the cabinet has been discussed a few times now.  The total width of the cabinet is 68 inches and the width of the middle console is 11 inches.  Everything including was measured with the idea of 1:1 scale.  Measurements from front to back of seat, pedals, "dash" (tv monitors) etc are all based off my vehicle.

I do have a couple things, additions if you may, that I wont show until finished.  Small items but everything is about details right?

sorry I have been on vacation since beginning of June.  Wanted to get some opinions about something though.  On the middle console, in between the 2 seats, I have a set up just like a regular vehicle.  I am going to line and upholster the lid with leather.  I would like to use black leather and either stitch a solid red black widow on top or possible take to a monogram shop and have the black widow stitched in.  Any suggestions?  Has anyone else done this sort of thing?  I cant be that revolutionary.

sorry I have been on vacation since beginning of June.

Look in your local Yellow pages for an auto upholstry shop. Most of them can do what you're talking about for under $100 depending on how intricate your design is.

Sorry all!  For some reason my profile decided to unclick responses to this.  Blinky, the shifting for the system will be on the back of the steering wheels; paddles like F-1 racing.  Everyone you really haven't missed anything.  My router collet broke and the company wanted to charge me $90 for a new one!!  I bought a quickrout attachment and will be back routing in a couple days.  Basically have been spending time with bondo, sanding, and biscuit cutting.  Not really worth a new picture.  Once I get the marquee finished, hold up because of router, I will be ready for prime and paint.  I will keep the updates coming as it should really take off.

How strong are the pedals you're using?  I stomped right through a plastic set in the past.  I'm starting to do some research for my next project and am looking for ideas for robust pedals.

The pedals are from Logitech too, nothing special.  If they wear out quickly I may try something else, but this is not a dedicated racing cab.

Alright, finally getting to the pain process.  I have already primed, sanded, and applied the first coat of black.  I went with a semi-gloss for finish.  I cleaned the roller but still have some fuzz in the paint.  I will begin picking.  All the edges have been routed for T-moulding.  I have the two marquees cut and ready for artwork.

List of things needed to finish

1. mount the pedals
2. create column for steering wheel
3. wire
4. install (speakers, TV, fans, switches)
5. install t- moulding
6. Vinyl graphic designed and cut.
7. Side art

This is my little makeshift paintbooth in our unfinished basement.  The ropes you see actually raise the booth out of the way when not in use.  Works very well and the arcade was one of the reasons it was built, but one of the last to be painted.  Funny how that always is the case.  1 - 2 more coats on the shell and the pain process should be finished.

looking really nice flyguy.  sounds like just a lot of little loose ends and you'll be all done.  good job.  as for the gas, yeah, i don't know about that.  gotta go with the charcoal.  hahaha, just joking.  very nice.  sometimes its good to kind of step back from the mame projects and do a little something else.  i've kind of lost the wind under my sails in my cabinet, so i'm just doing some landscaping.  but yeah, good job flyguy.

I like how you constantly write "pain" instead of "paint". Not sure if it's an intentional thing, but its a very accurate sentiment!

I should be able to get it all finished structurally, but cosmetically I am having difficulty with the artwork.  I cant find anyone to vectorize my images.  Also I am not 100% sure I will use the images I already have.  Open to any suggestions.

Flyguy!

Hello there fellow Lincolnite!  Was looking through the BYOAC to see what kind of tempered glass would be good to use for my mamecab and saw you mention Lincoln in the "Plexiglass and Smoked Glass" thread.  Nice to see some of the MAME excitement is whirling around the midwest.  I began work on a Centipede style cabinet about a month ago.  Progress has been good.  Seems I can say the same about yours as well.  Nice work.  Would love to see it in person some day.

Regarding the glass, someone had mentioned places in Iowa.  Well look no further than serveral fine glass companies in the Capitol city.
Just started working down the list in yellowpages for a 2'x2' piece of Graylite #14 tempered...so far it is looking good:

A BETTER GLASS COMPAY  476-7531  $35
BINSWANGER GLASS   467-2596   $80 (not likely)
GLASS CONTRACTORS INC   477-8974  $38
THE GLASS EDGE  420-7155  $40.26

Maybe we will have to field trip to each other's pads and take a peek sometime.

Take care,
Shawn

Okay a few updates on the cab.  Picture is of the first coat of paint.  With a black widow featured I had to go with jet black.  Pain in the --I'm attempting to get by the auto-censor and should be beaten after I re-read the rules-- getting no streaks etc.  This is only the first coat and I think my camera was into making dots on everything that day.

I see TheCoder making his driver so it is giving me more motivation.  Always the excuse but tons of things that needed attention before I get to have fun.

Done with painting, 5 coats.  Have cut and installed carpet on floors along with hinges for fold down pedals.  Installed fan and cover, all speakers and grills, amplifier for bass shakers, terminals for speakers and bass shakers, and finished housing for marquee.  In contact with Mr Snaake for some artwork.  Cut slots and installed all T-molding.  Cleaned up cat barf off newly laid carpet, yeah.

Need to complete
1. wiring terminals and breakers
2. finish artwork
3. get leatherwork done for middle console
4. install pedals and plugs
5. re-assemble front and rear portions
6. Install 2 super secret add ons.

Getting close, I am only 107 years older since this started!!!

You let me in on one of your super secret add-ons.  Thanks.  Now that the cat is out of the bag why not document it here.  And what is the second secret?

You started this project what, over a year ago?  I remember studying it when I was doing the initial research for my cab.  It looks like you only have about 20 solid hours to go.  You are not going to let me get behind the wheel first are you?

I'm working like a banshee!!  I have another idea that I don't think I am going to use now.  It was two chrome headers from I think a Buick.  I don't know if they will look as good as originally planned.  I am however, upholstering the armrest.  I need to get the image digitized and stitched with the black widow emblem.  Actually did a little work today.  Mostly wiring and I installed 6 of the 8 brackets for my seats.  Not a whole lot left, but trying to move the large pieces on and off myself is impossible which slows everything down immensely.  Artwork will take the longest for me.  I think Snaake is still looking at my art.  I haven't had any contact with him in a while so I don't know what steps are left for art.  Needless to say I have a rather large canvas to cover.

So to be corny, "The race is on".  (Pun intended)  Who will finish first? :o

On a disappointing note, the back portion of my cab has some paint issues.  I noticed yesterday some paint roller lines exacerbated by dust.  I will repaint this area since there will be no artwork covering it.  I wish I could use my spray gun, but because I tore down my "paint booth" and it is not recommended to be sprayed I am S.O.L.  Back to the roller.

I could take both the sprayer and the piece outside but the paint does not recommend using a sprayer to apply.  The paint I used is an oil base.  We actually contacted a rep from the company and asked if it could be sprayed, he said no it will take too much to dilute.  I guess a couple more times with the roller wont hurt.  Frustrating since the t-molding speakers and amp are already installed.  Thought about just letting it go but I know that would annoy me everytime I look at the cab.

Alright, finally got some work done on this thing.  Mounted the driver's seat and most of the brackets for the passenger seat.  I installed the 2 plates for the switches located in the middle console.  Through these switches I will have control over my tvs, amp, lights, and fan(s).

Holly molly its a rats nest!  I have most of the initial wiring done for my positive side.  I had to make sure I only do 1 at a time otherwise I get confused and sometimes forgetful, not good combo with electricity   :dizzy:

Now I should mention that the cab is extremely dusty so it makes my paint look horrible.  I am sure most know what I am talking about.

The panel here is located on the driver side of the middle console.  This is where all my breakers are located.  Doubt I need them but I probably dont need a 2 ton 2 seat arcade either.

This is the back of the driver seat.  The 4 screw heads you can see are from the bass shaker mounted inside the seat.  I really didn't want anything to show but once I opened the seat, didn't have a choice.  Hindsight 20/20 I should have ran the wiring inside the seat and down below the seat out of sight.  I do need to re-bondo and paint the top side of both seat risers.  I reinforced the "boxes" just in case I have a heavy friend or something.

This is the top of the cab, see my dust?!?!  I need to cut the wood in my shop and bring it downstairs but I am too lazy.  I installed this a couple days ago but never took a picture because it is boring.  My fan and cover.   :o   knocked your sock off didn't it!

Finally, a couple of the electronics installed or next to be installed.  The first is my panel amp to power the bass shakers.  I am having a very tough time finding any grommets to fit a hair larger than a rca cable head and 3/4 thick.  Almost given up.  Anyone have any direction here?

2nd pic is of the video and system splitting.  The little guy on the left is nothing more than a 4 way selector.  I will only use 2 slots at first for my PS2 and Dreamcast.  The will be flush mounted inside the middle console.  The guy on the right just splits and ups the signal for my 2 tvs.  This will be mounted inside and underneath, basically by the wiring in a previous pic.

One of my secrets is revealed!  I told TheCoder he should use this on his driver cab because it feels like he is whoopin up on me in terms of progress.  I plan on installing this little guy soon, probably behind the passenger side.  Pretty easy to make really.  It is a marine fire extinguisher.  I dispensed the stuff, cranked off the top, painted, and use a NOS sticker I bought on eBay.  I think it was for a 10lb bottle.

I looked on ebay for the sticker and did not find this one.  There was another, but not nearly as cool as this one.  I'm still considering using it, but it might not make it in the end.  Thanks again for the idea.

Sorry, no ideas on the grommets.

Regarding progress, at my current pace, mine might also take over a year to get done.  You better finish before me.  Get to work!

With the last week off I was actually able to get some work done.  Most of the initial work involved running wires, hooking up terminals, etc.  Nothing worth a picture.  Since the parts are so big I had to wait for a friend a couple times for assembly.

Most of the assembly is finished, about 95%.  Only areas to finish are the flip down doors for my pedals and attaching the middle console.

Cardinal Sin!  I turned it all on.  Nothing blew up so I must understand a little bit.  I will post some pics in a few minutes for "Almost"-final assembly.

And the final batch.  Still need to finish some small items but mostly it is assembled.  (notice how I didn't say finished!!)

One question for anyone.  I have a splitter sending the signal to the 2 TVs.  When using a light gun with my PS2, the TV on the right aims accurately and the TV on the left is off to the right about 6 inches.  If I switch the video inputs it makes no difference.  When I tested both TVs individually the gun worked just fine.  Any suggestions?

They do look a little weird dint they?  I might eventually get some black seat covers.  I originally wanted 2 Jeg racing seats but to no avail.  I didn't want to spend the $$ to buy new ones.

I still don't know how you convinced your wife to let you do this...LOL!

I am a little confused as to how this happened as well.  I am trying to convince her that I need to build a smaller upright for some regular games.  We have a computer and monitor sitting in the closet that is yearning for Mame.  I got a quick no.   :-[

No advice on the gun sync, but...

Are you going to put some sort of bezels around the TVs?

The mounting hardware at the base of the seat(s) stands out a little odd.  I'd hit it with a little paint.

In a previous post you mentioned this is not a dedicated driving cab.  But are you going to have steering wheels and if so, how are you going to mount them?

Are you planning any side art (sorry if you wrote about this 6-12 months ago).

Glad to see you active again.  I was beginning to think I would beat you to the elusive "finished" post.  I'm painting now.  The pressure is on!!!

I handle it how I handle my budgets at work. For example -

Me: "We'll need 1.2 million to do the upgrades, unless we decide to use the cheaper alternative"
boss: "The cheaper alternative sounds good to me"
Me: "your right, if we go that route, I'll only need 500k"

For the arcades I threw a little nostalgia in there as well as overshooting

Me: "I need about 10 arcade games"

You can guess how the rest went. In the end, she feels like she got her way. The build is looking real good. If I build another driver - it'll be for a console.

One of the last pics had the front piece that covers the two TVs.  I also added tinted Lexan to cut down on what you can see around the TVs.

The mounting hardware at the base of the seat(s) stands out a little odd.  I'd hit it with a little paint.

I am planning on painting the washers and touching up some areas on the cab.  There is so much dust on everything it makes the paint look horrible.

In a previous post you mentioned this is not a dedicated driving cab.  But are you going to have steering wheels and if so, how are you going to mount them?

The steering wheels will be mounted in front of the seats.  I want to make it so they can be easily removed.  I have had a couple ideas but nothing certain yet.  Might be a work in progress for a while.

Are you planning any side art (sorry if you wrote about this 6-12 months ago).

I am planning on some side art, Snaake is probably going to help with this area.  I will use the Marvel character "Black Widow" as the main and fill in with other Marvel characters.

Wow! That thing is insane. Nice work.
On your issue with the light gun, I'd try making the room as dark as possible. Maybe a light source is interfering things. Just a guess though.

Thanks for the compliment, I appreciate it.  I will try calibrating with the lights off an on to see if there is any difference.  I have heard the frequency? of the tv might make a difference.  One is a RCA and the other a JVC.  Works perfect on the JVC and sometimes on the RCA.  It is very difficult to calibrate on the RCA.  I am clueless.  I want to try another gun before I get to crazy with ideas.

I don't have the dimensions beside me and I'm too lazy to go downstairs right now so I will guess.  I think it is close to 72 wide and long.  About 5 and 1/2 feet tall.  Ya know the size of a regular bartop.  I will get some more pics and progress going here.  Seems as though once TheCoder gets his drive going it gives me life too.  My problem lately has been, I turned it on!!! :applaud:

The only suggestion I have is lose those seats - they look terrible!

Why not try some racing seats instead, something like this?

Those are Supra seats, if my memory serves me correctly.  Supra seats are among the comfiest seats ever produced by Toyota.  Plus, racing seats start at around $300 for a pair for the cheap ones, whereas these look like they came from the wreckers.

Turn it off!!!! That seems to be a common problem.  Once the thing gets operational, progress grinds to a halt.  I'm on my third coat of paint, and catching up to you quickly.

So what remains on this 2 year+ project to call it done?  A couple of weekends?  Why not plan a 4th of July party (assuming you're in the US, else some other time this summer, ur, uh, assuming you're in the Northern Hemisphere....)  Nothing like a dead line to get you motivated.  If that doesn't work, just follow my project thread.  That should light a fire.   ;D

A couple comments....

I liked the first Black Widow logo.... the one with the geometric web behind it....  Start working with some artistic types to create a cool Marquee/side art that has a font similar to the geometric shape and uses the logo for the O in Widowmaker.

As for the seats, I see nothing wrong with the Supra seats, but as your going to do a leather center console and are striving to make the rest of the cab look beautiful, these are going to stick out like a sore thumb.  Take them to an auto upholsterer and have them covered in the same type of leather as the center console with silver pinstriping on the seams, then have the logo stitched into the headrests.

You didn't mention it, but are you making the seats adjustable for different heighths?  Just need the tracks that the seats mounted to.

All black will look too plain, so plan on some pinstriping or something.  Hell, hire an auto pinstriper to come to the house and do it.  Maybe pick proper color-shades and get some black light or neon around it to spiff it up.

And for splitting screens, dedicated twin racers or twin shooters (like Time Crisis III) have separate CPU's and hard drives and play together through a router.  Doubt you're going to be able to split the signals to two screens without having some playability issues on the shooters, or visibilty comfort with the racers using only one console's CPU.

But...  I've got relatives in Lincoln, so if you ever get it done, throw an "unveiling" party, fire up the grill and show it off.  I'm coming up there in August anyway...

You are correct!  These are from a Supra.  I like the seats because of the internal features, i.e. lumbar adjustment, side adjustment, height adjustment, and headrest moves up, down and forward and back.  The color is somewhat less desirable but ironically matches the NOS tanks.  Once the cab is "finished" if the seats really stand out I may either reupholster or use covers.

I like that logo also but the problem is no one wants to vectorize the image.  Seems it is too complex.  Actually having some trouble with artwork in general.  Snaake was the go to guy for a while but I haven't spoken with him for months, maybe he is backed up, don't know.

The original idea was surrounding GranTurismo and splitting for each vehicle.  I think, not for sure, that this follows the same principle as TC3 and other 2 person shooters.  I really don't want to get another PS2 just to play a couple games but might be an idea down the road.  I think the RCA tv has a different frequency or something to that effect.  The gun doesn't calibrate worth a darn even if I remove the signal splitter.  Little frustrating there.

Unveiling party, hmmm  maybe I should start on that poker table.  After all there must be varying entertainment.   >:D

What that pretty much means is that you're not offering them enough money to do it.  Hard work costs money.

What that pretty much means is that you're not offering them enough money to do it.  Hard work costs money.

Put a potentiometer in line with the fan.

Thats the problem, we never even got to the money talk, just dimensions.

Thanks for the fan advice.  I didnt think it would be a big issue.

I bet if you went to an Illustrator users' forum you could find someone to do it.  That's what I'd do.

You should just get some black leather/vinyl dye.  You can find it at auto parts places, just dye the seats black (or another color to better match), and when it's cured, it won't rub off on you when you sit on it etc...

Can't wait for this one to be done, looking great so far...

Hey, just thought of this.  Try contacting the guy who owns www.yourautotrim.com.  I have bought poker table felts and padding from his site and I'm confident he is online community friendly and would know the answer to this.  He is a main contributor at www.scottkeen.com/poker, may be a great asset to you in this.

Ditto on the potentiometer.  The fan really doesn't need to go that fast and the sound is drastically reduced at slower speeds.

As for the seats, if you are not happy with them, you could always check out your neighborhood junk yard.  At roughly $50 a pair, you might be able to find a stylish pair of seat you really like.  They may also give you some trade in $$ for your others.

+1 for dying the seats.  I haven't seen it personally done on leather, but I've seen the result on fabric, and it looks pretty good.  And it doesn't bleed back onto your clothes after they dry either.  Now, I'm not sure on the longevity of the colour.  They might fade pretty quickly too.

Actually, I just remembered about this stuff from a similar thread on another board.

Check my uncle's interior page, he redid the entire interior, including steering wheel with Leatherique.

I've refinished AE86 OEM leather wheels in the past with leather prep and black leather dye. I bought both from a shoe repair store, and the results have been quite good.

I can't comment on re-dyeing something as "blue" as that "blue" though. I don't think you'll be able to mask that

Now, the blue the second guy was talking about in that last post was a very bright blue, so YMMV.  Either way, some more options to think about.

I must have missed something somewhere on the fan issue, but how big of a fan are you using and where is it?

There are a lot of 5" fans available for custom PC building that run virtually silent, and can even light up in various colors if you're into that.  I have about 10 in my Desktop which are all running about a foot away from me and I can't hear a thing.  Have to look to see them running.  Bought for less than $5 apiece at a big computer parts supercenter.

I just did a quick google search on vinyl dye (not sure if your seats are vinyl or leather, but if they are leather, just search for that instead).  Found this site:

http://www.automedia.com/Auto/Vinyl/Interior/Dyeing/res20021101vd/1

It talks about geting a compressor and sprary gun, but I've seen other sites that said they bought the vinyl dye in rattle cans.  I'm sure there are better guides out there, this was just a quick search.

Once had to get new seats for a 79 Honda from a junkyard, but couldn't find black, which matched the interior of the car.  Could only find tan, which looked like crap.  Went and bought some black spray paint and repainted the seat evenly.  Looked great and had no problem sitting in them even in the heat we get here in Texas.

The quick search for leather dyeing showed some promising results at first.  The more I read the more I noticed a trend with statements that it is not recommended for leather.  Supposedly the natural hides are treated and coated with something that does not allow for great uptake of the dyes.  I really need to make sure they are true leather and not a coated vinyl.  Anyone know off hand if early 80's Toyota Supras had leather or "pleather"?
