Sonic Arcade (updates from the weekend)
« on: August 02, 2005, 09:36:19 pm »
Well, after 5 years of planning and dreaming I am building my own Cabinet from scratch.

I am completely new to woodwork, so things aren't that easy to me but I am doing the best I can.

It will be based on Lusid's plans, just did some little modifications to fit my needs. I am using MDF, 15mm.

Bad news is that where I live (Brazil) Arcade parts aren't that common, so everything I buy is sort of expensive compared to what you guys have. T-molding is being a real pain in the ass to find (I can only find two colors (black or white), some parts must be imported (I-PAC) and the taxes are expensive here too, ...  :'(   (Good news is that where I live girls are extremely beautiful and easy going, it's easy to find great looking babes anywhere you go  ;D )

The cabinet will be blue and the control panel black (suggestions are welcome). I will use Sonic in the marquee and maybe on the control panel. I was thinking of leaving the CP all black, just covered with plexi, but I did not made my mind yet about it.

I didn't decide which lay out to use on the CP. Again, any suggestions are welcome.

I am thinking of either buying a TV or a computer monitor to the cabinet. The computer monitor I could affort would be a flat 17', maybe and really maybe, a 19'. Don't believe I could afford a 21' (about 800$ here (dollars)). I could buy a 20' or 21' TV. Using a 17' computer monitor wouldn't it be too small to fit the cabinet (Lusid's style)?

I am working only during the weekends on the project so it will take 3 or 4 weeks to be done.

Here is a picture of it's current stage. I spent only 2 days on it.

I will be putting up a site to document the whole thing, taking pictures and notes along the way right now.

Here are some pics.

Thanks for all the help.

Given the choice between a 17" monitor or a 19-20" TV, I would definitely go with the larger TV...  17" is much too small for a normal sized cabinet.

FWIW, we in the States have to import the I-PAC as well, so you're not alone there.  Would think that you should be able to get t-molding shipped from elsewhere if necessary - it's not terribly bulky or heavy if you're just ordering enough for one cabinet, so shipping shouldn't be too terrible, and it's fairly inexpensive, to taxes shouldn't be too bad (should they?)

As far as expensive to import, somewhere in Brazil there's an R-Type machine that used to belong to me...

From what I can see in the pictures it looks like you're doing great!  I haven't scratch built a cabinet yet, but I hope when I do I can take to the woodworking as well as you seem to have.

Ok, some work was done during this weekend.
TV Bezel was cutted, back door was assembled, lamp and sound were installed...

I just changed my mind about the TV I will be using. I think this one I using is no good, givin' me a poor image, poor details and the wrong colors. Adjusting the TV can solve some problems, but it can't be powered off 'cause it loses all the custom configurations.

Ah, know what, I will be buying a brand new one tomorror. Maybe with flat screen, does it change too much the gameplay?
I have a 29' flat screen and the image is superb...

I've installed the wiring for the blue lamp and set the sound up. Man, this sound just turned out AMAZING! I believe it could not be better than this (of course it could, but what the heck...) I used some car audio stuff that were laying around here, without any use...

A local vendor nicely gave me two coin doors. One is a classsic old style (at least here in Brazil) and the other one is more like the ones you guys use) The problem is that they are both used (really used), dirty, scratched and with a lot of rust. I did a hell of a polish job on the one below, but I believe the work payed itself.

Enough of talking, here are some pictures:

WTB: The Grid by Midway (2001), looking for 2 or more complete games, and large marquee

Hmmm...  I might be willing to trade some T-molding for some of these "beautiful and easy" girls!  j/k

Looks good for 2 days work!  Keep it up and keep us posted.

I believe I have more pictures here, speacially from the third girl on the right. Her name's Fernanda and she posed for a local gym and I did the pictures.

But it would change the real meaning of this board, so I think it's better not to post....

cheers!!!

I am current at work right now. Later tonight, when I reach home I will post some huge quality pics...

It seems like my little Sonic Arcade will be unseen and covered by the "other" parts I will be posting...
