XBox/MAME Combo

I am truly addicted to Tiger Woods 2003 on the XBox.  This is the best game of all time.  Therefore, I am now changing my tune on my upright and thinking of going with a TV and having a XBox and MAME combo system in there.

Any ideas or concerns with this?  Has anyone attempted something along these lines and can offer any advice?  I have done a few searches and haven't really found too much info on the subject.  Any insight is always appreciated.

Are you planning on making controls compatible with the xbox?  That would be an expensive task.  Tiger Woods requires the use of the analog sticks so that could put a damper on the plans.  Good luck with whatever u decide!

I have a mame/PS2/Xbox cabinet (although I'm still actually in the process of adding the MAME computer to the cabinet). What I did was hack a PS controller and I use it as a main "starting point"...it works for most of my ps2 games, and then I hook an adaptor (ps2 to USB) to it, and it controls MAME games on the computer. And I hook a ps2 to XBOX controller, and it controls Xbox games.

This doesn't work with games like Splinter Cell (xbox) or Medal of Honor (psx, xbox) where you need the analog control. I just use a remote control joystick for these. Gives me the best of all worlds. I think there is a way to hack an analog controller for the D-stick on the Ps2 and the thumbstick on the xbox, but it's beyond my limited technical grasp.

I'm also thinking of making a cabinet with MAME/x-box combination, even though I love the IPAC I'm actually considering using the X-arcade interface since you can buy an adapter for x-box (it also comes with two joystick and 20 buttons).  They said it can also be configure for analog control.

Where exactly does it say you can also have analog controls for the box.then i would just get that interface and add.I already added madcatz hack but only digital and i dont get to play all the game with arcade joystick(x-box isnt that hot for arcade games now but for the future .

thanks....good link however i only want the x-box analog interface so i emailed them about just buying the analog or try to hack some myself..i will post back about what they had to say.

btw, has anyone tried (if they already have a vga monitor) using a TV-in card to run a console through?  I'm trying to get one so I can watch TV on my system.... but might be perfect.

FYI, the x-arcade only has one digital 8-way joystick per player.  If they advertise compatability with analog, its something you will have to "switch" to between the d-pad and 2 analog controls (have no idea how...and if it can be done during gameplay)  Also it would only be "simulated analog"...as in only 8 directions at full analog signal.  

For doing things like choosing menu items in nfl2k3 (which is only done with the analog stick) it should be perfect.  But for actually moving players on a game I doubt its very good (again depends on the game).

yeah..i already figured that it wouldn't  be same *analog* feeling but i might get do similer to what you did(dave_k) with your analog hack but i am still waiting on x-arcades email.

I am working on an xbox setup, and would like to ask which ps controller with analog controls is easiest to hack.  I am finding that the xbox adapters don't work with the digital only pads.  Any suggestions to xbox adapters that support digital controls, or ps pads w/analog that are easy to hack and cheap of course, is appreciated.

I just wanted to add to my previous post, that the controls that I am hooking up to the ps pad are digital happs supers to be more precise.  I'm not trying to setup analog controls through a digital ps pad then an xbox adapter.   Maybe mtalkington has a suggestion for me.

I wish I could help, Index. I got an X-Arcade thinking it would work well with PS2 games like Medal of Honor, where you need the little thumbsticks. But really it's not practical, switching back and forth between modes.

The most sensible thing for me to do (since I have no idea how to hack the thumbsticks) was just to use the control panel joysticks for games like madden and racing and so forth, where I don't need the thumbsticks. For games that DO require the thumbsticks, like Medal of Honor, I just use my wireless controllers. It's kind of a drag, but really, games like Medal of Honor and other FPS games aren't designed around arcade-type controls, so it's just as well.

Thanks for the input mtalkington.  I also plan on just using the xbox pads for games that require analog input.  Does anyone else have any suggestions as to which ps analog pad is easiest/cheapest to hack?

Good question.  I myself am asking the same question.  I have my arcade conversion (not converted yet) with an arcade monitor, but would like to be able to switch between mame and my DC.  I don't really want to take out my arcade monitor and replace it with a tv, because the monitor works fine!  Any thoughts??

I ran dc(GOD ! please dont compare video cards inputs with native vga signal from dreamcast) and ps2 and both looks crap so my suggestion is get a vga switch box(ebay $12) and switch between dreamcast vga box and PC.thats what i do.go to my site and in the monitor section i have a picture of the switch box i use.

no man..just get the vga box and thats it .dont even bother trying to built one yourself(I know Dave_k would/might post about making your own but its just not worth spending the time on making your own ).

I'm confused... is your current arcade monitor the type that has a VGA connector?  if you wanted to keep the arcade monitor you may need to do a more difficult/creative hack...

(lilwolf though could use/get a VGA out converter for his console since he's using a regular PC and a VGA switchbox without too much trouble  - and I'd still go that route even if you got a tv-in card - but you could certainly get by using the tv0in card for console use...)

I don't have enough knowledge to help you, but maybe someone in the monitors forum could get you going.... my assumption is that a TV and an arcade monitor are similiar enough that it's feasible to do.  You might wanna read up on some of the PC2Jamma pages for background info on arc monitors etc....

Thanks a bunch guys...I've been scouring every site I can find to learn as much as possible, and I think i've got it all figured out.  Ive got an arcade monitor, so if i get a vga adapter for the DC, and a VGA switcher, i run both the PC and the DC to the switcher (after modifying the DC VGA to output 15khz), and then hack the VGA cable coming out of that to connect to the monitor correct?  I am planning on picking up Andy's new card when thats finished for the PC to handle that end, but if that doesnt happen then probably a j-pac and I have to re-think it.  Right?  Or could I use a j-pac, and have both the PC and the DC go through that through the VGA switcher?  

I can wait for the new card though.  I'm not in that big of a hurry, and my cab is just sitting in a friends garage right now waiting for me.  hehe

Luxury, you are right on with using the DC VGA box (hacked to 15khz) to your arcade monitor.  Details are in the "Game Consoles" section.  You don't need the j-pac unless you plan on using the jamma wiring harness for controls.  Andy's card and the DC hacked VGA output through a VGA switch box will work fine.
