Yet another "can you identify this game?"
« on: August 01, 2005, 08:48:15 pm »
This is a vague description, but I have not been able to identify this game for the life of me - nor have I been able to find it in MAME.

It was a boat racing game that I believe came out in the early to mid-nineties. All that I can really remember about it is that you were out in the ocean for a little bit and you had to safely navigate around buoys - maybe like a slalom. But the real reason I remember the game is that you eventually end up at a stage on a river and there are city skylines in the background and one of the skylines is Albany, NY (where I grew up). It's quite recognizable because of the Empire State Plaza and The Egg (for those who have been to Albany).

I thought that it might have been a bootleg of Hydra, but I just don't see it - especially because I think I would have remembered the yoke controller.

Thanks

Nope, couldn't be, Hydra's graphics are not that detailed.  Hydra is basically Roadblasters on the water.

Midway's Hydro Thunder?

http://www.klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=H&game_id=8161

I don't think so. From what I remember it was a stand-up cabinet and Hydro Thunder came out in 1999. I believe this game came out much earlier than that.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I've been manually searching through KLOV for an ID on this game - no luck yet. Anyone else have a clue?

That's too funny! I work in a new building that is right next to the building behind the egg - thought I was seeing things when I looked at this post...

Could it have been a location test that never went into production???

The more I search - the more I believe that may be the case. It was a pretty cool game none the less. I remember that the only place where I played the game was a bar called Hurley's Pub, although I believe they're no longer around. Boy, did they have some great wings there.

I remember that game as well, but haven't seen it for some time, and of course can't remember the name...

The more important question is...

Why would you even know that? You have too much time on your hands!  :)

Holy smokes!!!! I don't believe it!! Thanks so much for finding it Brandon. I would have almost bet my life that it wasn't Hydra. I really don't remember the whole beginning stage and starting the game at the dock.

You would have thought that I would have known it was Hydra - especially after picking up one of these a few months ago...

where did that skyline picture come from that Fiscap originally posted?

PS - you're right Brandon, Google Image search is the bomb - http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&lr=&safe=off&q=albany+skyline - first column, third photo down. ;)

aah.. my bad :)  I wondered where that pic came from.. it looks like a screenshot from a video game.. The way the sky has a weird gradient look and the buildings look flat like cardboard cut outs or something. maybe its just me  :-\  anyways.. glad I could help!
