Making a Control Panel for my ps2 off a psx controller (HELP)
« on: December 27, 2002, 03:54:23 pm »
Okay i have read a lot of research on this and i am getting the hang of it but i want to hear from u guys if it is as easy as people say it is.

I am planning on using this type of controller for my brians http://www.dishplace.com/images/pelican/pelpl3004.jpg (anybody ever use this one to make their own) I spent 5 bux plus tax on it.

Currently i am making the wooden case for it but when the wireing takes place i wanna make sure i dont mess up. Also i saw in one site they had there psx controller with insulated spade terminals for 22-18 gauge wire (Radio Shack 64-3125). Why do i need those cant i just make solder terminal to button?

Please anybody who has done this before please reply i need all the help i can get.

Yeah you could solder the wire straight to the terminal.  The spades are there for you to "change" things a bit faster or fix things a bit easier. <-- should anything go wrong.

As for what guage... I would try using a higher guage (thinner) wire for soldering onto the PSX controller PCB.  Using thicker(naturally stiffer) wire might make it more prone to ripping the copper contacts off during handling.  I used a thin wire from the PSX PCB > Terminal Strip and a thicker wire from Terminal Strip > Arcade controls.

BTW, the picture you attached didn't show for me.  I used original SONY controllers so that PSX to PC adapters would work.  I tried using a cheap 5$ PSX digital only pad before and I couldn't find any adaptors that would work.

Well the controller is called Digital Edge it was made by Pelican but Gamestop endorsed it and took off the pelican name. I am scared that i will mess up because in each site that i followed they gave me different soldier points.

Some people said to bridge the buttons together then connect to one ground on the pad. Some said not to.

I have taken pictures of the insides and all i will ask that somebody map the points i need to solder.

This would be of great help to me. Thank you guys so much for doing this.

The pictures of the controller are located here http://www.geocities.com/xiontex/

That was actually the first controller I used for my first arcade joystick.  They are very easy to hack to, just remember that the reset button doesn't have an LED attached to it (I'm s m r t)
mmk, to answer your questions, the reason why you want to use those quick female disconnects is so that you do not have to solder to the microswitch.  If you're a pro soldering guy, then go for it, but personally for me it's 100 times easier to just crimp up 20 quick disconnects and push them onto the microswitch tabs.  Also, different controllers have different requirements with grounds.  Almost every single off-brand PSX controller will have a common ground though.  What this means is that you only need to solder to one ground contact point, and from there attach all the grounds on the microswitches together that touch that ground.  With the other side you have to wire them all individually.
If you need more help, here's an excellent page with some explanations.

CthulhuLuke thnx for the info man.

If it isn;t too much trouble can you find a way to get in touch with me and send me a pic of the pcb with all the soldering so i would definatly know what goes where my e-mail is adraxeon@msn.com . That would also help me out a lot. But in the link you send me there are different controllers and different places to solder. And i will get some female connectors and a strip i just didn;t wanna get one because they were worth more than the controller. My setup is going to be a capcom style with 2 extra buttons for each controller. So i am planning on using the r buttons and l buttons. I dont realy have a need for the reset buttons and the rest of those extras at the top.
