Where should I put my dreamcast?
« on: July 28, 2005, 10:17:56 pm »
Should my dreamcast go in my emulation cabinet or with my other consoles?

My main purpose for owning a dreamcast is to play capcom vs snk, marvel vs capcom 2 and house of the dead 2.

If it's in the cabinet then those games become part of the arcade experience.  If it's with the consoles then I can have 3 simultaneous games at one time instead of two.  Plus some of my friends would prefer to play fighters with some distance from the opponent and not squished together.

What do you think?

i vote to put it in the cab ;)

and if you must have one not in a cab you could always buy another one for around $30-$40

Dreamcasts are like $20 or less now... just buy two.  You can have the best of both worlds for really cheap that way.

What kind of monitor is in your cab? I don't think the Dreamcast gun will work with a PC monitor even though the Dreamcast was made for VGA output.

I just bought myself a Dreamcast off ebay for the sole reason that I want to put a cabinet around it.  All I'm interested in is new fighters (MvC 1 and 2, CvS 1 and 2, SFIII, etc) so I couldn't care less about analogue controls and all that jazz.  So the whole thing will be bundled up in it's own cabinet as soon as I get the free time to build it.

Under my TV, of course!

It might be hard to find a Dreamcast for $20, but they are undeniably cheap. Just search them on Ebay. Buying 2 would not be hard on the wallet.

I already have a Dreamcast I don't ever use, but I'm not prepared to part with it. I'd like to think that someday I'll build a cabinet for it.

Dreamcast guns work great with VGA monitors. I play confidential mission and house of the dead 2 all the time on my Dreamcast cab which has a VGA monitor. Oh and if you can put it in your cab; go for it.

I think getting another one is the anwer I was looking for.  It seemed like such a dumb question to post, but now I'm really glad I did.  I'll put the one I already in the cabinet first, but I'll leave a spot for the other where my consoles are.  The cabinet has a 27 inch tv.

Make sure you can access it through the front so that changing the games is easy.

I love my Dreamcast hooked to my VGA monitor, and the gun works fine.  Now if I could ever get around to building a showcase cab for this beast, it would be just like playing HOD2 at the arcade!

I don;t have a current picture, but when I first put my Dreamcast in a cab, I was able to put it and the hacked pads inside the CP without issue.

Since this picture the Dreamcast is still in the CP but in a much nicer cleaner look and I have a KVM and a serial data switch  in the panel as well to switch between other systems MAME & XBOX).

I find its very convenient to have the Dreamcast located in the front for switching games and I highly recommend it.

I have my DC in the cabinet which is located near a TV as well. I switch between cabinet use and standard controllers with the TV whenever a game seems to be better one way versus another way.

Games that take full use or are designed around a standard controller (analog stick, shoulder controls, etc.) are best played with real controllers. But then there's the shooters n fighters that play awesome on a cabinet. Best of both worlds for me is to swap controls and video/audio whenever I wanna.

Than why on earth are we dealing with writing drivers and such for Guncons (which if i remember, need a little finaggling with to get working with a pc monitor), when we've known about a perfectly good light gun from the get go....

... because they don't work on a PC and the list of Dreamcast games is limited.

:( There must be somthing wrong with my set up, I've tried two different DC guns and both do not work with my Computer monitor.  What kind of VGA adaptor are you guys using?

I've got one like this one that works fine. I have used others with similar results. On some you may need to tweak the contrast levels in order to get it to aim properly.

Another option is to take the composit output from Dreamcast and use a device like this one and it should work as well. A buddy of mine uses one of these.

Hope this helps,
