Anyone know what these are called? (Found It!)
« on: July 26, 2005, 11:21:08 pm »
Wanting to build my own Star Wars Yoke, based on the plans detailed here:
http://arcadecontrols.com/hosted/yoke/

Does anyone know what the toys are called that the author used for his handles? (and where I can find them) I'm attatching the pic of them from the article.

I think they're called "El Cheapo Junk Plastic Toys" from the .99 cent store.  Probably imported from Bangladesh or something.  Also probably never find the exact same ones- but go to stores that have a lot of cheap plastic toys and goofy candy and you might find something similar.

They're handles from those stupid toys that were in all the 99 cent stores, convenience marts & Blockbusters a while back.  The handle had batteries, a small motor, and maybe some lights inside.  And there was a toy Batman//lollipop/bundle of fiberoptics/whatever on top.  When the kid pressed the button/pulled the trigger, whatever was on top would rotate and any lights would light up.

I think this particular fad has died down, though- so finding them may take a little work.

Wal-mart has an entire aisle in toys dedicated to junk crap plastic toys for under 5 bucks, they carry those spinning light up things in that aisle pretty much for good as far as I know

I just found that Target had similar 'Spinny Top' toys like these discounted to around $3.  I was hoping to wait and see if they got discounted more but the next time I went in to the store all but 2 were gone.  I quickly grabbed those.

Target is the only place I have seen these things and I am located on  the west coast of FL, if that helps.

I am building that yoke from those plans also, and couldn't find them anywhere. I searched every Wal-mart, Target and dollar store here to no avail. I ended up buying a couple of Happ handles which look like they will do the trick.

Don't make the same mistake I made: don't get them from Happ, try Bob Roberts or one of the guys here that sells Happs parts: you'll get a way better price.

Are those things sturdier than they look?

Surprisingly yes, for pieces of plastic.

One thing I did notice is that the one's that Menace used in his Yoke are a bit bigger than the one's we are finding.  I guess these are molded for kids hands and not us adults.  I still don't see a problem once its done.

The two I bought at Target are exactly like the one's from Shawnzilla's source.  Except they are yellow, and one has stars on the end, and the other has hands on the end.  Ok, the shape is the only thing that is exatly the same.  ;D
