On or Off when not in use?

Hello,

I have a full size arcade using a D9200 27" monitor.  The question is, should I leave this thing on all the time or should I shut it down every night?  I am trying to prolong the life of the monitor, and I don't care about power usage.   Not sure if its worse on the monitor to be turned on/off constantly or worse to always be left on.  Thanks in advance!

I would think that if you leave it on constantly, you would get some pretty nasty screenburn after a while

nah, it is running a screensaver when Im not using it.

My question is how often do you use it? I stick to the rule that if I am goiog to use my system within 24 hours I leave everything on. If not I will shut it down.  Most monitors do have an energy saver mode that puts it to sleep after a while. Check your menu on your monitor.

Well we will find out...i just set it to turn off monitor after 4 hours (was set to never).

You'll have to figure out how often you play the machine.  With that setting, it could possibly turn on and off your monitor several times per day (which I thought you were trying to avoid, if it was bad for the lifespan).

If you don't plan on playing it for over 4 hours, you might as well manually turn it off.

Or leave it on until you go to bed, then shut it down. (That would keep it to about a 50% work cycle, while not cycling power too often).

Huh?  I don't get how playing over 4 hours has to do with it.  He set shutoff to 4hours.  Meaning it will shutoff after 4 hours of non-use.

My arcade cabinet is set to suspend after 30 minutes of non-use, then I don't ever shut it off.  Just wondering if the D9200 can support this.

I think any system not in use should be turned off.  Apart from my tree-hugging side it just seems wrong to me to leave something powered on for no reason...

I don't actually have a cab yet, but i always pictured myself leaving it on,  as for one, it's more inviting when guests come over if they see it actually operational, and also, what's the point in downloading all these nice attract videos and setting up screensavers involving pac-man and what not, if your just gonna leave it off when not using it anyway

Right..that was kinda my philosophy on it as well.  But definately not at the expense of my D9200!

It's always nice to have you machine on like a real arcade would have it... you will just prolong the life of everything if you turn it off when not entertaining and playing.

See, there's difference of opinions on that, depending on how much you play.  Turning on and off create power surges which could shorten the life of some componants.

A computer and monitor in suspend mode use up very little electricity.  i believe it is less than your typical light bulb.  Pretty much everything is shutdown except for a small circuit that is watching when to wake up.  Needless to say, when your computer is "off" it is still on.  It partly how ATX works and how come you can wake on lan and such.  Many motherboard, even when you turn the computer "off" will have some sort of LED status indicator that is on.

This is partially the same thing I guess, but I have the same monitor I received in 1998 with my than brand new Dell system.

Other than a couple long stints where my computer was down and being fixed or for some other reason HAD to be off, i've left it going, along with the monitor, but only in standby.   Even if I DO turn off the computer now, i still leave the monitor on in standby

After what is essentially 7 years of doing this with this monitor and having it hooked up to multiple systems over that course of time, it still works as flawlessly as it did than, and is as bright and clear as well....Now, i don't know if arcade monitors, or moreover, a television could handle that, but setting your monitor to enter standby after 30 mins shouldn't be too hard of a hit on it, and from my usage habits, will seemingly last at least 7 years  ....thus far

(ps, i do have to admit that after 7 years, the adjustment knob for the screens brightness and geometry gives me a fit at times, but still workable with a lot of patience and deep breaths)

So u would set the time limit for the Arcade monitor to turn of just like you would any normal PC monitor, through windows, can this be done on any arcade monitor of just some models? Can u set it up so it completely turns the monitor of, cos i was just going to use the power button at the back of my jamma cab to turn the monitor on & off, as i thought this is the only way to turn it off, is there another way then?

UPDATE:  The (or at least my) D9200 does not support monitor suspend mode.  The monitor just shows NO SIGNAL instead of turning off.  So I am back to square 1.  I guess I will just keep mine turned off when not in use.  No Biggie.

I agree with this. I don't leave my car running when I'm not driving it. I don't turn on the dishwasher when it doesn't have any dishes in it. I don't leave my computer on when I'm not using it. This makes sense to me.

I have had my Sony monitor since 1997 and I always turn it off when my "day is done". Yes sometimes that means it gets turned back on and back off 2-3 times a day, and I use it EVERY SINGLE DAY. It has not broken and is not showing any signs of stress from being TURNED OFF.

I have had a D9200 in my Butler 2001 since... well...  2001.  I always leave the PC and monitor On.  A screen saver runs from within Mamewah showing screen shots of whatever emulator you leave it at.  I have had no issues and for my own vain reasons I like to see the arcade game snap shots when I go by the machine.

I think that about sums it up, or we could keep telling everyone it's a waste of power, therefore we won't help them find a solution to the problem they are wanting to solve.  OR, you could use everyone's words except your own to demonstrate how people view things, and also how we differ drastically in those views.

Yeah, it's all good until they have to do like they do in California where they are forced to have rolling blackouts just to keep up with demand. Toronto Ontario area is damn close to the same problem. They just shut down a power plant with no replacement and now are bitching that everyone's consuming too much.

Did they turn off YOUR air conditioner today?  Is THAT why you're sounding so cranky?  I don't know if you noticed it or not, but it certainly WOULD affect him personally.  Not only that, it would affect him monthly.  They send these things to people all the time called "bills".  For the effects of his actions, that bill directly affects him. 

You want to be immune to the problem, go off the grid, add some alternative energy source to help relieve the load, invent a way to remove the effects, etc.  Here's an idea.  Work to get those people who think the same way you do and want to solve the problem into positions of power. 

Kinda surprised you thought consuming enough power to whine was a smart use of your resources.  Are you one of those "first to auto censor"?
