Which LCD panel is reliable and cheapest?
« on: July 21, 2005, 01:40:18 pm »
I would like to buy a flat panel monitor (maybe a 17") so the depth of my cabinet remains minimal.  I am willing to spend at most $150 on a monitor but really have no idea what to be looking for.

Do some work better than others?  Are there some better brands out there which are more reliable?  Any deals people know about?

Please give me your recommendations..... thanks

PS:  Just wanted to mention that I am not really that picky on how the pictures looks as well.   I mean it does not need to have superb display capabilities or be incredibly crystal clear image.     If the images can be seen nicely as a nice TV would show them, then I would be happy.

I can vouch for the quality of LG flat panels, but they are usually more costly than others.

Best advice is to go to a Best Buy or something, and look at the displays and see which one looks best to you.

Just be careful you don't fall in love with the $500 Sony ones :)

I'm not sure if you can get a 17" LCD for $150.00, i bought a 17" Liquid Video brand LCD for around $250.00, probably could have found one alittle cheaper but it's been problem free.

Aww, just missed a very good deal on a 19" BenQ at Office Depot for $166 (call store, might still have some left?).

Found it at slickdeals.net or spoofee.com

Otherwise, I personally don't have one yet so I can't comment (were sold out of BenQ here) but I have heard the Dells are actually very nice. --Erich

Dell LCD's are pretty good.  I've owned two, and my father had a 17" currently... 173fp or some such model number.  If you watch out for a deal, you can get taht 17" for a few bux under $200... but I doubt that $150 will be possible.

Tigerdirect has been having rebates on 17" LCDs for under $150 quite abit lately.

The main thing you have to watch for is response time.  I'd say no more than 18ms, no more than 13ms if you are a gamer.

That's pretty good except you said "TigerDirect" and "rebates" in the same sentence.

lol I'm glad someone said it.... I've said it enough on these boards, I think peole are sick of hearing it from me. :)

Just saw a 15" Norcent on spoofee for $99 @ Staples, regularly $189.  Don't know much about the brand, tho.

Oh yeah, you can also get .99 panties at fredericks of hollywood on spoofee, too.  Something for the wife/gf.

Just don't call the store asking about flat panels like you did here, since a flat panel is not an LCD, it's a CRT with a flat screen.

I get exactly the opposite reaction everywhere I go.  I specifically ask about flat CRT monitors and always get directed to the LCD people.

Samsung makes one of the better (best?) crystal panels. Dell uses them in thier NON-ECONOMY ones. Their economy ones have a lower quality ones with more negativity at an angle due to a lower viewing angle.  The econo ones start with "E" in their model number (e.g. E171FP).   While their good ones don't (e.g. 1905FP).

With coupons and discounts (check bensbargains.net, techbargains.com, slickdeals.net or fatwallet.com for codes) you can get even a 19" (1905FP) for $275 this week from Dell.

In order of preference if you want to play classic video games with classic look, go with:
- Arcade monitor (or do it yourself out of a chassis+donated TV tube)
- Curved screen older PC CRT monitor (higher dot pitch)
- Flat screen PC CRT monitor
- LCD panel

Note: I don't even mention a TV with composite or svideo input as the quality just isn't there and just doesn't fit in the above list for quality for me. Even an LCD with proper lines added can probably look better than a TV setup.

"flat screen monitor" = CRT with flat tube
"flat panel monitor" = LCD or plasma monitor

 :police:WORD! :police:

Samsung are the best Quality / Value ratio IMO. The 930n is dope and the 730n, 19" and 17" respek. The older models still have a really low response time but they are now "DIRT" cheap. the 712n and 912n, 17" and 19" respek.

Good stuff sometimes you can find an unopened steal on these on ebay! Good Luck!

I use Olevia Brand LCD - I had a couple other brands not match the quality and features and the price.
