ikari warriors - better memory
« on: July 14, 2005, 12:31:19 am »
Someone who remembers Ikari help me out please.

I've been enjoying my ikari warriors game immensely.  However, the rotary joysticks seem to be backwards.  When I rotate the joystick to the right, the guy rotates left.  Is that correct?  After playing a while, I'm used to it, but I can't help but think something is backwards.

Anyone remember, or have it set up now.  And if it is backwards, any thoughts on why?   (i'm using Happ rotary joysticks with the 22 pin version ikari board)

thanks!

Thats pretty funny, you have definately got something set up wrong. Incorrect joystick assembly or something, I don't know.

I don't have the pinout in front of me, but that's sounds like a simple swap of two cables for the rotation signal.
Just swap them and it should work ok again  ;D

Shouldn't be inverted.

If you are using Druin's board, you can also just swap the wires between the board outputs and the keyboard encoder, or swap the L and R inputs in MAME.

ooorrrr.....just go into mame options "for this game" and choose analog controls.

There you can just choose "reverse" dial. Fixed.

Done!

....nah, I know for sure it works as I just did it. I was also like holy c#$p why is this reversed.

I did the reversal through software and boom. Gaming zen!

the trouble is, i'm not using mame, I have the origional ikari warriors PCB.  That's why I'm wondering if maybe the happs controllers come differently than the LS30's.  Thanks for the info though, I thought it was backwards. . . . .

Now I just need to figure out how to get it right.  Is there any possibility the joysticks could be backwards somehow?  I only took the stick out when I mounted it on the control panel, and it doesn't look like there is any 'wrong way' to put it back in.

Oh well, it's still fun to play :>

MameMaster said he had the same problems with the Happ joysticks and Druins interface.  In your case, I think you want to flip the cables over.

....hmmm...I hadn't even thought about that (that Happ wired them backwards and I had to reverse the connection)....but until I reversed the cable....it didn't work at all....so that fix may not help this guy out.

I'm guessing that since this is an original board...everyone's first guess is correct....he has his wires mixed up elsewhere.

Hmmm.....

Guessing, but sounds like every pin except the ground pins are reversed.

Suppose the PCB pins go:

G1234567890ab ("G" = common ground, "0" = pin 10, "a" = pin 11, "b" = pin 12)

My guess is happs pins go:

Gba0987654321

I don't know if happs pins are designed that way, or you have a mis-wired set.  [shrug]  If my guess is right, you can try rewiring.  I don't advise cutting anything yet, though; try to make a temporary adapter first.

Another possibility is happs is NO and the PCB expects NC (or visa versa).  Less likely IMO, though.

yeah, i've tried 'flipping them over' and they don't even work then.  I think because the ground is in the wrong place.  Well, it works for now, and I don't feel like messing arround with it yet.  I might try to make an adapter first if I can find the parts.  I'd hate to cut into the happs parts. :\

Thanks for your help guys.

you should be able to push the pins out from the cable and switch there location.
no cutting . No disassemble as Johny 5 would say  :police:

Try switching the ends of the cables from the board to the stick. I know they only connect correctly in 1 direction.

DaWaynes suggestion is a good one.

When I was experimenting with a similar ribbon cable I just used a small point (from a mini screwdriver set) to push against the silver connector in the plastic part (I forget what it's called).
That pushed down the tiny metal piece that held it in place w/o breaking it.

You can then reinsert/switch wires at will. Look closely at this pic-- on the left where the ribbon cable attaches to the rotary connection is the "plastic part" I'm talking about. On the top...you can see the silver of the connectors. Just insert someting pointy in there....and the cable should release.

Just do it carefully and you'll be fine.

Thanks.  never would have occured to me to just take the pins out of the connector.  That's why I love getting objective opinions.  I'll probably do it tonight and let you guys know how it goes!  I'm guessing I'll just have to reverse all the pins?  Thanks again.

hmmm......if you reversed all of them can't you just reverse the connector?....(now that I think about it!) ie- unplug....turn over...and plug back in.

You need to unplug the cable from the board and plug it into joy and the end from the joy into the board. This should reverse the wiring.

I have a machine with a heavy barrel pcb in it and would be fairly confident my solution will work for you as I also bought new happ mechanical rotary joysticks

Simply unsolder all but one of the 12 wires (do not unsolder the centre common)
then resolder them in the opposite order . If unsure just check the other end and make sure the colours are in the same order just opposite to what they are now .
I actually e-mailed happ controls and was told to swap wires 1 + 4 , This did not work for me ......
hope this works for you .
