BYOAC Hats v2.0 - now with real polling action!
« on: July 12, 2005, 10:24:52 pm »
Like the trickle down technological advancements during the Apollo missions that gave us Tang, digital watches, and chocolate space food sticks, the token design process has resulted in a player one button design that I really want on a BYOAC Hat.

So as with the joystick hat design before, my interest in creating BYOAC related headwear for personal use stands to benefit the community as a whole, provided there is enough interest to setup a run.

Demands on my time (job, family and cab building) will require me to streamline the process this go round.

Just like before, the hats will be sold at cost. And just like before they will carry my 100% No Prosthetic Forehead Guarantee. These are NOT the kind of hats sold in gas stations. They are unstructured cotton twill, the same kind of baseball cap you'd get at J. Crew or...errr... the Gap.... only with a strap.

Hat color choices (for now) will be super dark (almost black) blue and khaki. Other cap styles/colors may be offered at a several dollar markup. The arcadecontrols.com url would be along the side.. or maybe back.

Here is a very rough and out of perspective mockup of the design. I'm still waiting for confirmation from the embroiderer that this design is feasible within the budget of a final cost per hat of around $15.

All payments will be via PayPal (VISA and Mastercard OK). Shipping will be first class and included in the +/- $15 cost.

I'll need at least 12 orders to confirm the run. Post in this thread if you are willing to preorder at $15. Once 12 people have done so and the embroiderer approves the design it'd be a go.

Posting that you'd be willing to preorder is not a commitment to buy, but an indication that you'd definitely do so if the run happens. I'll post an update when the official ordering starts.

I'm a bit torn as to whether to keep it simple (and put BYOAC on the side or back) or whether to put it on the front. You're the second one to suggest it.

Put me in for one of these hats!

I would have to say that I prefer the design with just the icon, looks pretty slick with  just the 1-player button.

Cheers,

I loved the first hat. I still wear it... although I still get people who think its a lollipop :)

I'm in for another one this time.

BTW... if these are the exact same type of hat as last time, they are very comfortable and have held up very well.  I can take pics of mine which has seen a lot of use, and it still looks awesome.

Next I'll be on fries, and that's when the big money starts rolling in.

Put me down for 1 black or almost black as you call it.

Also would you have one with a velcro adjustment. I am not a big fan of that belt style kind. Even if it cost more

If I can get one in BLACK for ≤$20 count me in!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

The old hat had that on the back.  It had BYOAC and then "www.arcadecontrols.com" underneath.

Here are pics of the old hat for reference.  Please note that I'm not sure they will be the same hat, so color and style might be different this time..... although they look VERY similar.

Text on the back of the old hat is WAY too big...  If anything, do just "BYOAC" or the URL (I'd go with the URL, since no one who doesn't already come here knows what "BYOAC" is), but not both, and in a less obtrusive manner.

I agree, I always thought it was a bit too much on the back.  Even just a smaller font would be better IMHO.

Im glad to see I'm not the only one interested.  ::) Just heard back from the embroiderer and he says the design is a go. So the run is on!

I've decided to keep it button only on the front with the URL (and maybe the BYOAC) on either the side or back.  :)

To answer a few questions/concerns:

These will be from the same hat manufacturer as before. So unless their product line has changed they should be an identical style/quality to the first run.

I'll take a khaki one as well.  I missed the first run of hats, don't want to be left out of this one.

I like the icon on the front and agree with the URL in smaller font on the back.

Can't wait....

I'll go for a khaki one with just the button on the front. For me less text is better.

Yeah, it's a very rough comp. I'll do a better one soon. The button may be a bit smaller as well.

Yes. Though not the plastic strip kind. I may be able to offer a fitted version.... no opening in back.  (though they are around $20 or so if I remember correctly) I'll post a JPEG with style and color options as soon as I can.

It's not actually black.. its just a very dark navy.  The color of the hat I posted is the "almost black" navy.

OK. Change of plan. More colors and no extra charge. Additional cost only for more expensive styles of fitted and structured hats (details on those to follow).

Here's an updated mockup of the hat(s). The hats shown are actual hats from the ball top run, with the new logo photoshopped in. So there is still some wonkiness to the perspective, but you get a better idea of what the hats will look like. This is still a mockup/approximation.

I've also mocked up an EXTREMELY rough comp of the proposed type location. Obviously readability, perspective and the look of the embroidery would be vastly improved on the real thing

You can count me in for at least one though I will probably get two....one to save (I collect) and one to wear.

The first khaki/sage picture looked to be a bit higher quality cap than the followup lineup pics.....that is, it appeared as though the material was a bit stiffer and thus the cap would hold shape better.

I'm in either way and will be watching for when its time to make payment.

As far as leaving type off, I'm still thinking through how much customization I have the time and energy to deal with. I'm hoping to keep all orders as simple as possible. I'll let you know.  :)

The first picture was the same hat from the manufacturers brochure. It looks different because in the photo of the hats I comped up, there is nothing holding the hats into a perfect ball. I guess that's what makes this style "unstructured." That stiffer holds its shape off your head structured style is available but they cost more I guess due to the structuring mesh inside. It's not so much a quality issue as a style issue, I think. I like the flappy canvas feel of the unstructured hats, but I'll get prices for the structured as well so that's an option. Last go round I think it cost 4 or 5 bucks more.

....you know....looking at it agin (and I know these are mock-ups only)...would it be better to use an Atari Style little man on the start button? I know with embroidery it's hard to get too detailed but I'm wondering if he looks like a "+" symbol instead.

I personally like the suggested size of the present button relative to the size of the hat...but maybe it should be just a bit larger to make the little guy more obvious looking as a start button.

Hey...you guys don't need another lollipop hat on your hands!!! (which I think it pretty cool by the way!).

Just a thought.

We had a lolipop the first time around, this time my first impression was that it's a picture of a fishin' hat with an asterisk on top. It's funny how arcade cabinets are such strong pop culture icons but when you take a detail out of context it's really hard to distiguish. ...just an observation.

I love the fact that we're having hats made, I guess it's a good thing I'm not on the art direction team... we'd never have a final design  ;)

my first impression was that it's a picture of a fishin' hat with an asterisk on top. It's funny how arcade cabinets are such strong pop culture icons but when you take a detail out of context it's really hard to distiguish. ...just an observation.

And I think that's a valid concern. I'm going to tweak the design a bit to address it. The stick figure will be changed to separate and enlongate the arms (which was previously suggested). That should help regonition a bit. I'm also going to change the rim shadow on the button top to feel wider and lighter so it's less like a 90 deg. edge. Probably also add a light shadow around the edge of the bezel. The embroiderer is currently testing stitch patterns to see if he can separate the bezel, button edge and button top as "satin stitches." This kind of stitch has dimension to it... it's like the puffy sticker of the embroidery world. If he can achieve that along the 3 separate areas I thing the bezel will bulge out very slightly like a rounded surface... as will the button egde. That should also help identify it as a button, I'm hoping.

That said, the "out of context" comment may hold true regardless. So those who can't live with the potential confusion should probably wait until the 2007 design which will be a logo unmistakably recognizable as the rotating restrictor plate of a 4-8 way T-stick Plus. ;) ;D

Wow!  Looks like I almost missed out.  I haven't been lurking this board as much as I used to and almost missed this post.  Thanks to Saint for posting a news item on the BYOAC home page.

I got two on the last run and still wear them both on a consistent basis.  I got one as the floppy, unstructured and the other was a structured.  I really like them both but if I had to choose a fav, it would be the structured.

Can't wait to see ordering options.  I might get 3 this time...

I may be able to offer a fitted version.... no opening in back.  (though they are around $20 or so if I remember correctly) I'll post a JPEG with style and color options as soon as I can.

A fitted hat normally costs around that amount, so that's seriously NOT an issue, if you were thinking that it was.  For something custom and related to this for us, I'm of the opinion that $30 wouldn't be out of line.  Naturally, I wouldn't WANT to pay that much, and would DEFINITELY like it to be more in the $20 range, but I just wanted you to know your price point there isn't outrageous.

If I may throw my opinion in here, I think it would look better if it were set up like the Nike hats (and others) currently out there.  Although they don't have a web address on the back, the placement of a third embroidery element I believe would look sharper on the SIDE (the BYOAC), and have the URL follow the curved opening in the back.

For a visual example of what I mean, here you go:

For the URL, you have it down pat from the last hat.

As an aside, something like this should never be made for BYOAC:

and lastly, I'll take one in khaki or navy....haven't quite decided what color, only know that I want one.

Pixel, just a thought, the atomic logo would be very cool on a hat, is that too complex for stiching?  Regardless I am still in for 2.

Santoro- Yeah, the atomic logo was the design that initially got me interested in running the first hats. Unfortunately it was deemed too complex to stitch without getting into massive quantities. I guess it would have to be run on different equipment or something. Another BYOACer has some great embroidery contacts, so I may discuss running it in the future with him, probably to coincide with the launch of my website this fall (gotta have something non-Mission Control related to offer).

AD- I'll check into the price. I'm sure it's doable, just may be a little pricey few bucks or so...

If we can't order them with our handle on them, you can take it to one of those small shops in the malls which does the embroidering on hats (or atleast they have a couple at my local mall) and they will be able to do it for a few dollars.

I'll be posting a news item any day to officially open the ordering process. I'll leave it open for a week or so then send the order in to the embroiderer. Turn around time after that is up to them.

my first impression was that it's a picture of a fishin' hat with an asterisk on top. It's funny how arcade cabinets are such strong pop culture icons but when you take a detail out of context it's really hard to distiguish.

I've been thinking a lot about how to avoid this. I showed the button logo to a coworker and a neighbor. Coworker is a bit young to remember arcades, neighbor is not a gamer but the right age to remember.

Results:  Co-worker's first impression... hat. Neighbors first impressions... "cake on a plate... or maybe a button of some sort."

So I've been trying to add detail to the design to make it more immediately recognizable, but I've found it remains too abstract out of context no matter how much detail is added. And the detail detracts from the iconic look. So.... my thought is to bring it into context in a way that keeps it feeling like a logo.

BYOAC on the front won't help. But the URL absolutely does. So unless there is a widespread revolt, this will be added to the design. If this is a deal breaker for anyone, I really apologize. :'( No orders have been taken so there's no need to retract anything... (you won't be billed  ;) for having posted interest )

Initially I wanted to avoid putting anything other than the logo up front. But I think this layout keeps the clean look and really helps the button function as a logo. I am absolutely determined to avoid any confusion on what the hat represents this time around.  ;D

Are the grey "lines" on there to represent shading of some sort?  I don't follow you on that picture.  *edit* looking at it again REALLY makes it look like a hat now!  All it needs is a pimp feather on the side and we're good to go! ;D

I DO like adding the "arcadecontrols.com" underneath it....if this is the choide, can we put BYOAC on the side, leaving the back clean?

There is no shading. The white is solid white thread, and same for the black. The image comes from the embroiderers digitzing software. I'm guessing that shading in his image is to make it look like it has sheen... which it will. So take that image with a grain of salt. It's the embroiderers equivalent of my mockups.  ::)

BYOAC would still be on one side. There will be an option to embroider your BYOAC id on the back for an additional $5 ($4 cost + $1 customizing surcharge since lots of order customization=lots of database/order maintainance time for me. Hoping to discourage too much of that but I'm happy to oblige those who really really want it.)

THAT sounds sweet as all get out!  Will the other lettering be white as well, or on the lighter hats (khaki is what I'm wondering about) would it be done in black?

Personally I don't like the url on the front.  It turns the hat into a billboard instead of a nice simple design.  And honestly if anybody doesn't know that it's an arcade button, who cares?

There are a lot more abstract designs on clothing intentionally made so only people that watch X tv show or listen to Y band or follow Z sport know what they reference.  I don't see a problem with this because if somebody doesn't recognize the button, they probably spent very little time in an arcade and wouldn't care about the hat anyway.  This is the same reason I would prefer no text on the hat at all.

@drew- Text will be white on black. It's up to individual choice. If no preference is indicated I will run black on the lighter hats and white on the darker ones.

@darktemp/ahofle- If a significant number of people feel the same I'm open to what the majority wants. *waffle waffle* I'm just very leery of people complaining they have to explain the hat, or regretting the purchase after the first "Is that a hat on your hat?" question. While I prefered the simplicity of the graphic alone, there is something about the relevance that the URL gives it that makes me feel the logo's a bit stronger this way.  Nevertheless - I'm the kind of person who actually likes tshirts and schwag that make sense only to the chosen few, so in that sense, you're preaching' to the converted. ;) *waffle* Sounds like it's time for a poll.

OK it's unanimous: 2 no's and 0 yes's.  I'll take one in black please!  :P

If I'm reading you right, stop right now and scrap the idea of different colors for text.  White on dark hats and black on light hats will look just fine, are common, and don't crap up the concept with fifty umbawumbajillion possible choices.

Now, to crap up the concept ;)  What about making the button stand up some more?  That way, the player 1 icon would be more recognizable and you could still go with the "shading" and whatnot.  Less flat is whutameanVern.

So far - BYOAC on the side, nickname on the back for $6 extra.

DK- My typo. I meant black OR white not black on white. I agree no colors other than black and white on the hats. But I figured I'd let people pick between the two.

As far as raising the button (rotating toward camera) I'm afraid while the stick figure may pick up detail, the shape of the button will be lost... becoming dangerously close to risking the far worse "mens room" misassociation.

Not a big fan of the URL on the front.  I like it with just the button because then it has that "l33t, in the know" feel to it. Any idea on how much it would cost to get a fitted hat yet, if at all?

....I have to say years ago in college I was in a fraternity (ZBT) and I had a custom denim jacked embroidered with ZBT on the back.

The problem?....I told them I wanted the letter in sort of an arch (with the Z and T slightly rotated to the left and right of the B respectively).

What did I get?....a jacket that looked like it said

I voted no on the URL on the front, but will still buy a hat regardless. If having names added will cause you too much hassle, I'm willing to just drop it as an option, and I'd be okay with that. If it remains an option by the time ordering rolls around, I'll probably choose to have it added to mine though.

Seek and ye shall find.....I was just visiting Armchairarcade.com's website and took a look in their store.....while I don't think the hat should copy this by any means....here's a good example of what I mean by a more literal symbol for the hat---

Here's a link to their other stuff....I may get  a few of these items!....they have a lot to choose from!

WHATTHE!?!? WHA.. Wait a sec! Are you accusing the bending pics of being MOCKUPS?!? Have I lost all credibility? Man... those were 100% in-camera shots of the real thing. Even the light saber-esque ones. No trick photography (other than a sloooow shutter) and absolutely no Photoshop. Cut me some slack.  ;) I pride myself on disclaiming my cheesey comps.

Oh man!  Sorry Pixel, my bad....I just assumed with the pace of work on the cabinet and the "updates" and....oh, man is my face red now! :-[

I was wondering why you were "practicing" so much on the plexi and "showing off" to us....here you were showing us the real deal and....oh jeez, I can't beli....hey, does this mean you're actually done and you're only portioning out progress pics to punish us for making fun of you? ;)

Hey PH, a question for you on the hats, are you going to use the same hats that you used last time?  I only ask because, mine fits pretty tight on my head, I usually wear a 7 1/2 or 7 5/8 and the hat feels a bit tight on my head.

The quality was just fine, just curious if the new ones were going to be any bigger.

Thanks!

They'll be the same, but there will be the option to get a fitted style... so you could specify whatever size you'd like as opposed to the adjustable style from last year.

While it looks like the "NO URL" minimalist camp is winning by a landslide, the embroiderer  has just agreed to run the hats both ways at no extra charge.

So all orders get their choice of either URL on front or URL on side.  ;D ;D

Look for the new "ORDERING" thread and related news item soon.
