I stained my cocktail cab with Minwax colored stain and it came out a little splotchy. 2 out of the 4 sides look really good but the first 2 sides I stained don't match because I was applying too much stain. It took a while to get the hang of. Next time I am definitely staining and sealing prior to assembly. Anyway, there are some areas where the stain is darker than other areas - it there a way to smooth it out so I get a more uniform look?

they make stuff to strip stain, but i'm not quite sure about the results. as for staning, for best results, use wood conditioner first. i'm sure someone will be along shortly to add even more. don't dispair.

Sand it off. Or you can use bleach, but that take out the color of the grain also.
I completely agree on the wood conditioner. it's great for plywood and soft woods (like pine).

I did use wood conditioner prior to staining... the parts that look splotchy are in the corners and around the CPs where I had to use a foam brush to get the stain in there - the sponge wouldn't reach. I'm definitely putting 2 coats of stain on (my test piece looks way better with a second coat) so maybe I can fix it... I don't know...
