restoring an old coin door

i bought a coin door off ebay, and im trying to restore some of the inner workings of the mechanism. The mechs work ok, but alot of the pieces are rusted. Plus the little slot where the coins are returned is rusted which makes it super hard to get the coin out since its not very smooth. Whats a good way to make everything run a little smoother. WD-40? Also, one of the mechs seems not to like taking quarters, they always get returned and dont fallinto the coin box, any tips on adjustments?

Well ive taken the mechs apart and started soaking them in CLR. Any other ideas?

If you mave metal coin chutes (a.k.a. mechs) then yes by all means carefully disassemble them and soak in CLR if they are rusted. Put on some good solvent-proof gloves and scrub those chutes while they are still in the CLR with a 'detail' style brass wire brush. When finished be sure to rinse the chutes well in fresh hot water and dry quickly. Now go over the now clean and dry chutes with a good rag and chrome polish to keep from re-rusting.

Never ever use WD-40 on coin chutes.

gotcha, but may i ask why cant u use wd-40?

WD-40 is a good *loosener* but not a good *lubricant*.  Use 3-in-1 oil to lube.  WD-40 gums up when it dries, and you don't want that.

You can use a drop of 3 in 1 oil on the hinge pin of the magnet gate. Never oil the cradles and never oil the coin path. Keep that WD-40 away from coin chutes.
