Steering Wheel
« on: December 18, 2002, 01:17:17 pm »
I was just looking on Logitech's web site, looking through controllers and came across this steering wheel...usually the PC wheels look a bit crappy, but this one has a decent looking MOMO wheel (metal+leather).  Also aluminium pedals (it doesn't show a picture of these tho).

Check it out at:

 http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?page=products/details&CRID=13&CONTENTID=5025&countryid=18&languageid=1

Has anyone used one of these or know if it's any good?  It looks pretty good to me but you never really know til you play with it I suppose.

I have seen it for sale on ebuyer.com (UK site) for a bit less than they are showing on Logitechs own site (

Should work good for games like Chase hq and outrun but not for 360 free spinning driving games like super sprint pole position ect..  urebelscum is the authority on this subject though.

Thanks for the complement, but I'm not that knowledgable about all the driving games.  :)

You are right, though.  I didn't talk about PC wheels being good for games like SpyHunter and not Super OffRoad (as well as those you mentioned).  It doesn't mater if the wheel is the leather wrapped MOMO of a $20 plastic wheel; all PC wheels are like 270 degree arcade wheels, and if the arcade game used 360 degree freespin wheels, the PC wheel won't work that well.

Hmm, I should make a list of the different games and controls and post it somewhere.

Is the other problem that some games use the wheel as an optical device (ala a spinner) but some use them as a non-optical device (like a joystick)?  I think that's how I rememer it.

Yes plz.  ;)

That's the same problem we're talking about:
360 degree wheel = spinner = optical wheel (= mouse),
270 = POTs = analog joystick (= PC steering wheel).

There are exceptions (roadblasters ::) ), but in general the above words are inter changable on this board as listed.

[foot="in mouth"]  Here's a table ( http://www.urebelscum.speedhost.com/drivingInputs.html ).  Flying, bicyle, motorcyle and clone games are not included.

approximate totals: 33 optical, 38 POTs (games)

Hi Urebel, your list shows RoadBlasters as optical.  I thought this game used a Star Wars yoke with the vertical axis disabled.  (And thought a SW yoke would be good to control it).  Is this incorrect, or does MAME have the inputs wrong?

(I don't have any real knowledge on this, so I'm not doubting your data!)

Yeah, sorry, I just meant for use with the 270degree wheel games...I've settled for using my spinner for the 360degree games :)

Tiger-Heli: I remember the Roadblasters topic came up a while ago, I believe the Roadblasters controller is not like the Star Wars yoke - it is an optical device but with movement restricted to ~270degrees (although it looks similar to the yoke).

Thanks for the list of games U_Rebel - very handy  ;)

Thanks Minwah, I never would have guessed.  That

Wow I never corraled all the driving games on one list to see how many their are :o. I'd have to say that it probably is worth building a dedicated driving game cabinet. (with switchable steering wheels ofcourse) I hate playing pole position with my spinner and I hate playing Chase hq with my hacked analog stick. I now know what my next project is. To hell with a dedicated vertical game cabinet. I have a 21" horizontal in my current cab so vertical games look good enough. I think I've steered the original subject off coarse so I'll stop rambling now ::)

Yes Minwah, the RB yoke is an optical device restricted to ~270.  Atari has many of the unique controllers (like 720 and RoadBlasters).

I've wanted to have that list myself for a while, too.
It's great to have you people out there to motivate me to do what I want to do anyway.  Without you, I just say "I'll do it tomorrow" far too often. ;D

While we are on the subject of steering wheels, I have just constructed one that will act in addition to the spinner that is on the control panel (i.e 2 mice active via the optimous program)  now both mice are recognized by DOS (according to mousechk program) but only the spinner is picked up by MAME (advmame in this case)  My question is how do I get advmame to recognize the second mouse so that i can use the steering wheel as player one and the spinner as player 2? thanks!
