ROBOTIC FX USB Joystick Controller?
« on: December 17, 2002, 06:13:48 pm »
Hello,
I was wondering if any of you guys have used the USB Joystick controller that Robotic FX sells.

www.roboticfx.com

I think it would work pretty well in a custom arcade cabinet.  I'd love to get some feedback from you guys!  This company looks interesting... seems they will make custom electronics really cheap.

An interesting controller but perhaps not the best for a control panel.  The 32 buttons are a matrix 4x8 and they recommend diodes for multi keypress.  This sort of sounds like the steps needed in a keyboard controller hack. They don't give any specs on how many keypresses it can take at one time and still register properly.  Someone would probably have to try one out to see how well it processes keypresses and analog joys at the same time.

I think my personal preference would be the ipac however if you have to have the analog joysticks it would be an interesting unit to check out.

Just my personal thoughts based on the documentation provided on the website.

Thanks Bob,
I had emailed them about that.  They said that you can press all the buttons at once and it would register properly.  I asked them about how fast it was, and they told me the controller is running at 24 MHz,  and that you will not notice speed problems with all 6 axis moving and buttons being pressed.  They also said that a new version of the board is being spun with the diodes on the board.

I think I will check it out!  This robotic fx usb joystick looks great for a custom joystick for video game emulators on the pc.  Thanks for your comments!   Does anybody else out there know anything about the www.roboticfx.com  usb joystick controller?

When I get it, I will give you guys a review!  Thanks!

btw, did you ask if they handle 5k pots?

If they do, then it might be interesting...

but remember.  the 1up starwars hack will handle the 5k pot joysticks to USB for about 15bucks (ebay)... I've seen them down to 1 - 5 bucks pretty consistantly..

then you have an IPac for 40 bucks..

So for 1/2 of the 1 shot price of the robotic fx controller, you have two solutions that are known to work..

But another solution is always more then welcome.

I was personally hoping to see an APac one day that would convert the 5k pot joystick and a few buttons to a USB joystick...

any chance Andy???

When I get it, I will give you guys a review!  Thanks!

Looks very interesting.  I'd like to know if it can do 5k and 100k POTs at the same time (on different axis of course).  Can't wait until your review.
