Its possible to use a gamepad to play Doom 3 but it would be horrible. There are times in Doom 3 you need to shift your aim point by a large angle almost instantly which would be impossible with a gamepad. It did help when dual analog sticks became available but it's as true today as it was then: First person shooters suck on consoles (and by extension, gamepads)

^ true.  But if you could play doom on your cabinet, even with so so controls.  Thats FREAGIN AWESOME.

I'm going to best buy a little later to see if I cant pick up lego star wars for the PC just to play on my cabinet (that I WILL build someday)

I'm also lookin for Virtua Tennis, Markrvp, any idea where I can get that for the PC?

Playing Doom3 is definitely possible on a cab, There maybe one hell of a lot of buttons on the key mapping screens however 10 of those are for individual weapon selection and about another 10 for features you'll rarely if ever use.
I have a 2 player 6 button configuration with trackball and 8 utility buttons and although it was a little awkward to play at first due to the unusual layout I find it fairly easy now.

My two kids and I have played Lego Star Wars on my new 2 player fighter panel until we're bleary-eyed.

I could swear there was a utility around, similar to Joy2Key, that could emulate mouse movement with joystick inputs.  I think it supported analog inputs or simulated analog movement with digital inputs.  Anyone remember?
There is SO a spoon.

Try joymouse for the utility to have a joystick act as a mouse.

I have seen a lot of "First Person" controllers come and go.  The reason the go is always the same nothing works for first person shooters like keyboard mouse.  Or in my case.....

Mouse ....

CLAW! http://www.claw.com.au/

If you play allot of first person especially on-line you won't be happy without a mouse IMHO.

I've tried playing FPS games using a trackball for look and an 8-way firetop for running/strafing. This has the same effect as a mouse/keyboard combo, but you have to take your hand off the trackball to jump/change weapons. With a lot of practice, you could probably get used to this combination, but I don't have the patience.

I actually get away with the combo as I have a reversed CP. Player one is on the right and the joystick is to the right of the buttons.
The way I have it set up is that I can use the Trackball and buttons with my left hand while using the joystick with my right hand.
The trackball is close enough to the buttons to allow it to be moved and buttons pressed at the same time with a bit of practice.

BTW is there anyone else who uses the 'reverse' joystick configuration? My Player 2 has a standard joystick on the Left layout.

i don't know, ive played doom 3 for xbox with a gamepad, and its not that bad (of course keyboard/mouse is better) but hooking up a xbox controller to a pc and getting it to map correctly should be more or less the same as xbox correct?
