Happ Competition Buttons... Opinions???
« on: June 28, 2005, 10:58:43 pm »
Thinking of building a "nothing special" Fighter panel.  I was just looking for some opinions on button choice. I think I want the Happ Competition convex style buttons but I want to know if they detract from the classic fighter feel or anything... or if they flat out suck.

Thanks in advance. Here is the design I'm probably going to use, but you guys are mad creative so maybe you can give me some better ideas?

That's pretty much what it comes down to.  I've only used them once or twice, and didn't like the feel of them.  A lot of people swear by them though.

yeah see thats what I'm asking.. what do YOU prefer.

Actually I was going to use the competition stick from happ too. I was gonna hook it up through ponyboy because he somehow has magical pricing powers.

Any comments on what you think I should so with the cp though?

Im basing it on the most used controls for the XBOX. Im making a switchable cab between PC/M@ME and Modded XBOX (with all the nasties ripped to a bloated HDD). I really want to be able to have every sicko fighter from every Arcade box, and every one from the earlier consoles... I think that's my mission.

I had an ill ass name for it earlier too but I got wasted and forgot what it was... D@mn Coronas!

PEACE! lol

I prefer Supers over Competitions for fighters, but to be honest, I'm not a big fighter guy.  That is why I would go with concave buttons if I were you.  You'd really want to get the opinions of hardcore fighter fans though.  I know a lot of people who play fighters like Sanwa joysticks and convex buttons, so that might be the "thing to have" for fighters.

For me, a casual fighter fan, I find Supers to be fine.

I play a few classics, but 95 percent of the time I play fighters.  I bought competition buttons because I heard they were better for fighters and I really don't like them.  So, I prefer the regular buttons.

I also don't like competition joysticks.  I use happs p360s and would use the supers after that.  I throw way more fireballs than I do dragon punches.  You might be the opposite.

See I was thinking about the p360s but I didnt want to spend a lot.
I read the comps review on retro and they sounded fine. But why are the supers better?

Think of the competitions as a square glass and the supers as a round glass.  When you go to stir a drink with a spoon it will be very smooth in the round glass but choppy with the round glass.  But imagin how easy it would be to find the exact corner of the sqare glass and there might be some trouble with the round one.

I don't like the choppy feel of the competitions.  There is a square actuator.  So when you throw a fireball there is a little bump.  But the bump is what makes the diagonal so easy to hit for dragon punches.  The supers are smooth because of the round actuator.

If you can find a fighter in your area that is there to make money, it will probably have a joystick with a square actuator.  It may not be as nice as the competitions, but it will explain what I am talking about.  You need to feel it to make the choice for yourself.

I like being able to "hit the corners" in fighting games. It allows me to jupm and crouch better. Plus any moves that require a diagonal are easier.

See xonix, Alan and I are playing the same games and want complete control over the character.  We simply preffer different sticks for those games.  You need to get out and check these out for yourself.

I think it might also be in how you like to hold the joystick. I hold it sort of from underneath so I don't feel the diagonals too much and I like knowing they're there. Someone who holds the joystick from above might really notice those diagonals, and it wouldn't surprise me at all to hear they don't like it.

I would go with Happs P360 joysticks - hands down the best for fighters, especially for all the special moves - way easier to accomplish. As far as buttons go, the american games mostly use concave, the japanese games seem to use convex. I personally think the concave buttons feel better, but that is only because it's what I "grew" up with...

If you use concave do you use Micros or leafs? Personally I only use leafs for like player start buttons and things. I can't live without the "clicky"!
