Is there a good traders thread alternative?
« on: June 27, 2005, 08:38:15 pm »
A discuusion has broken out in the good traders thread that belongs here.  To recap some members felt that the thread was way out of hand and really want a number system of some sort.  There is an awareness that the solution needs to require minimmum maintenance for the mods.  I suggested making rules for the good trades list thread to tighten it up, but there seems to be a focus on a number system.

Here was my suggestion and I'm going to delete the post from the good traders thread.

What if everyone was only allowed one post.  They would then edit the post to include every name they have had a succesful transaction with.  The comments would not be allowed to exceed the length of the line that has the name.  The thread would stay short and to the point and there would be no extra work for the mods.

Like this

Tommy - Great seller, buy from this guy any time.
Gozur - Dude sent my stuff right away.

All in one post.

I think a number next to the members name would be perfect, the problem is how would this update itself evey good trade without the good traders thread(how would we know if it was a good transaction with no place to post it), and without the mods having to be botherd evrytime.

Say a member has 3 good comments for there name by other members, they would have a +3 near there name or something similar.

Should probably look into seeing how other forums like NEO-GEO does it. They have a buyer seller trading system that auto updates a # next to the userid. It is different board software, but chances are there is something similar for SMF.

or have someone start a thread and keep a tally. people could pm the thread starter with a + or minus on the seller so it would look like this.

tommy +4
gozur +3
Shape D. -39
ponyboy  +289

ect.....

The board already contains the infrastructure to hold such a system as been described. It just tales some creativity.

You could have a sub-forum in B/S/T where every person starts their own thread and they can create a poll for "plus" and "minus". Then if someone wants to vote they can. If someone wants to leave a comment they can.

It's a bit distributed, but it works. It also puts each person in charge of their own stuff so no one person is responsible for everything. After all, who wants to do that?

I wouldn't touch it unless it was approved by a mod or admin first. :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police: :police:

I don't think every member starting there own response thread is a good idea, there are too many members to sticky all that info.

You don't need to sticky anything. Just create a sub-forum. If someone has recent activity on their thread it'll come to the top. We probably only have enough serious traders to fill up a couple of pages. You might have alot of people making one-time transactions, but they'll fall down the list. That's just as well, though, because active traders probably belong first, anyways.

I think the feeling in the past is that negative wouldn't be allowed.  I don't know why, it's just what I remember.

Saint what level of participation from you guys is acceptable?  People are talking number systems and subforums.  If I remember right you weren't into that.  Has anything changed in that reguard? Should the focus be on thread and sticky ideas or if an idea came up would you be open to it?

Well I just don't bother with the good traders thread. Never have. I figure any remarks I make about a person are going to be lost in a sea of commentary. Perhaps it's a thoughtful gesture, but it's far from useful.

The good traders thread is not that great but it does give people who have never traded on the forum some idea of who is a trustworthly person by other members comments, not a waste of time IMO. Hopefully a new format can be found from this thread.

The concept is great. The implementation is crap.

I've been looking at SMF mods to see if there's a way to implement this. So far no luck. There's a Karma system but it really isn't the same thing and not something I want to implement. I'll talk to Woogie next chance we both get to chat.

I am not famiilar with the Karma system, but if it's an open voting system where I can, say, give anyone I choose a rating... I see a definite problem.  There is just no way to police that.  You will have people rating as they please, not due to transactions.

Say I get into a heated debate with Bob on the boards here, and I prove him wrong after some spirited words.... what's to stop Bob from giving me some bad karma? Or.... let's face it.. we've had some jerks pass through here who just wanted to cause trouble.... "hey, let's give this guy a Negative cuz he didn't like me spamming"

I don't see how you could enforce it so that I can only vote if I actually bought or sold something to that person, and therein lies the problem.  If you just don't get along with someone, what's to stop them from giving you a terrible rating.  My feelings on the best car or better joystick, or whatever... have no bearing on how I conduct business.

I'm all for the honor system, but let's face it.. it rarely works.  For every genuine rating you get from a transaction, you'll prolly have 2 or 3 false ratings from people.  That's no way to decide who to do business with.

This is why I still say Heatware.com is the best way to go through this.  It's third party, there is less chance of people giving you false ratings since they'd have to sign up themselves, etc etc, and you can talk to Heatware to get false ratings removed.  It also works with any forum you read.  I may have 2 post here, but have been selling on AnandTech for 5 years... Heatware can show you that.  All you'd need is perhaps a sticky in B/S/T suggesting the use of Heatware.

Just my .02
