Wiring a mono speaker to a jpac?
« on: June 27, 2005, 05:29:53 pm »
i see on the jpac there is a SPK + and SPK -

Can you wire a single speaker to this without any additional wiring? i know it'll just be mono but that's fine.

Is the game speaker already wired to the JAMMA harness? The Speaker + & - , on the Jpac is used for the amplifier. Meaning, you could do the speaker hack, and cut open a cheap pair of speakers. Instead of the output going to the cheapie PC speakers, you clip, and you'll probably need to add some wire to this, but you then connect the wire you just clipped to the Jpac. If that makes any sense.

I used a pair of CyberAcoustics, and they sound great.Remember not to touch the plug from the amplifier that goes to the sound card.

I don't believe the Jpac is used here inthis pic, but if you look at the amplifier you get the general idea.

Let me know if you might need any pics of my setup

yes the cabinet speaker is wired to the jamma harness.  really all i want is for sound to still go to the cabinet speaker  -  the sound being what is output by the computer.

I'll post a picture of a my setup as soon I get home. That should clear a few things up.

Do you even have a cheap set of speakers you can take apart?

Okay Cool  :D

The first pic I'm uploading will be the wires already connected to the jpac. Pay special attention to the RED & BLUE wires, and we'll be following them in the next pic.

I hope this will help you a little.

Okay, now looking at the second picture, follow the RED & BLUE wires going into my little speaker hack.

NOW KEEP IN MIND, I've already wired this up and made her look all nice & tidy, but the RED & BLUE wires connect to WHAT ONCE CONNECTED to the original pc speaker, or better yet , THE OLD TOP HALF.

FOLLOW your wires, and you can't go wrong. Remember you're also going to have the power cord, as well as the cable for going into the sound card, so all in all, if you're doing a mono setup, you should have 4 wires protruding from the hack.

1. cable for the sound card with the little green plug
2. power cord for giving her juice
3 & 4. the postive & negative ( RED & BLUE) wires to do directly into the jpac.

I'll take a few more pics if needed, and maybe a better closeup if you're still lost.

Let me know.  :)

After your finished, you can wire it into a nice little block like you see pictured, and start your cab all at once by the flick of a switch.

Looks a lot more professional also.

If you have any wiring questions or even more with the jpac, just let me know.

Additionally, your speaker may or may not look the same as mine, but the general idea is still the same. I used an L-Bracket and mounted it right inside the coin door ( as pictured ). Your mileage may vary.

Why would combining stereo to mono damage anything? I've done it before (albeit, with low power sound). You just have to make sure ground goes to ground and L and R go together to the other wire.
NO MORE!!

I don't follow you Ray.

I was just thinking he might have had a Midway or some other cab from the 80's that only used one speaker. I dunno.

I was referring to a comment in Egg's the OTHER thread, which has been locked... Someone said something about "combining Left and Right stereo without damaging something"...

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,39106.0.html

I'm puzzled by this comment, because you can go to Radio Shack and buy Stereo to Mono adaptor plugs and all they do is combing Left and Right together, with no circuitry whatsoever.

NO MORE!!

At line level where the impedance is (relativly) high and signal levels are quite low, you can usually get away with one of those Y adaptors, but anything amplified designed to drive a low impedance like a speaker will have issues.

If somethigns only coming out one channel, and the other is silent, you are connecting a voltage (active channel) to soemthing thats at 0 volts (the quiet channel) - something will give - worst case you will get bad distorted sound as the amplifiers fight it out, worst case, something blows up.

The correct way to get mono is to use a bridgable amplifier like a car one, this will add the signals together after amplification so you dont have to worry about toasting things.

Or, combine it on the input to the amplifier, and just use one output of the amp. Be aware that a passive mixer like the adaptor plugs will make anything connected to the same output mono, so if you want to have one mono speaker and a stereo set, you will need an active audio splitter and have the mixing on one output only.
