Bucking magnets on speakers in cabs with arcade monitors
« on: June 22, 2005, 12:21:09 pm »
I have a 27" betson mutisync its a good monitor, & i have always had a green distortion in the upper corner close to my speakers, im using the 2.1 creative speaker hack & running sony explod speakers, i used someone suggestion to put bucking magnets on the back of my speakers(these are already shielded speakers) & it fixed my colors problems, just thought i would share this
thanks

Out of curiosity, where did you get the bucking magnets? I'm planning to run the same setup in my cabinet, and I had just about abandoned the car speakers idea because of the shielding issue.

Thanks!

You take an old speaker you don't want, and then cut off the frame using a hacksaw. Hopefully the scrap magnet is smaller yet almost the same size as the good speaker.

The only problem is attaching the bucking magnet, since the 2 will want to repel each other like there is no tomorrow. And you don't want to be putting forces on the speaker's frame, you could distort it. I imagine a good layer of epoxy could do the job.

Something I've always want to try is this. Transformers use a magnet friendly material, ferrite. Take a Xformer apart and you'll see it uses several plates of ferrite to make the core. Get that ferrite core out, and now split the layers apart. The whole thing is likely enameled over, so it won't be fun, or easy. Once you're done, you'll get at least a square foot of 'shielding material', since the ferrite shunts the magnetic field onto itself. It sounds great in theory, but I just haven't had a need to try this yet.

I used car speakers as well, but I used some of the products from this site to sheild my speakers:

http://www.lessemf.com/faq-shie.html#speakers

That is the tutorial on their site on how to shield the speakers, but they also sell the metal sheets.  The stuff works great, I've never had a problem since I got this stuff installed, and I hear that the bucking magnets can mess with yoru speaker performance (so that's why I chose this solution instead).

If you do go this route, my only suggestion is to wear nice thick work gloves when installing (I ripped up my hands on all the little metal edges and slivers).

Can anyone elaborate more on how bucking magnets mess with speaker performance?

Because from a cost stand point:
2 car speakers
a) 2 bucking magnets = ~$2
b) MagnetShield and JointShield = ~$25

BIG difference!
.... then my daughter said "Daddy, those games are old."

Great Info DM....

Would this apply to my jukebox at all? I have neon rings and when I turn them on, they interfere with my monitor. They don't turn it colors, it causes the monitor to become fuzzy and unresponsive(it's a touchscreen). Is this a different type of interference or could these magnets help me out?
