If it doesn't, I found the best way to do this is to just pop the cover off the PS1, flip it over and glue the "button" in the down position.  Let the glue cure and put it back on.  My system has been that way for years now and has never moved.

Glue.. um.. multi disk games.. o_O

I'm not sure if you're sayign that glue wouldn't work for multi disk games.. but it does.  In fact, just like the spring, you can play games with the lid up if you want.  If anything, the glue does a better job of holding the thing in place since it is forever in the "closed lid" position.

some games REQUIRE you to have that 'button' in the 'open' position for it to switch to the next disk.

Most multi disk games ask you to save before switching disks.  You can generally turn the console off after wards put in the next disk and then load your save.
