Space Duel overlay
« on: June 18, 2005, 03:28:24 pm »
Hello strangers,

It has been a long time since I've been here...hope all is going well.

I'm in the process of restoring and Mameing out a Space Duel cab and I need a high res shot of the control panel to base my design off of.  I'm restoring all the artwork myself but need to customize the panel to hold the extra mame buttons.  I've found a few shots online but nothing good.  If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.  Thanks!

I've got vector art of a "custom" version I did, that would give you a good start on it.

I didn't need the top instruction part, so I basically chopped that part off, and reworked the lines to fit what I needed.

Here's a shot of it.
PM me if you want it.
It's in Freehand 8, but I can convert it to Illustrator if you want me to.

I sort of agree, but the problem is there are about 75% more machines than working color vector monitors. Space Duel isn't considered very desirable, so even if one has a working monitor, it usually gets plundered for a more popular game.
I always thought Space Duel was kind of neat, don't understand why it isn't more collectible.

I think the biggest reason is that there are other games that are too close to it in function (Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe notably), and Asteroids is a more player friendly game.

There is nothing else like Star Trek, Gravitar, Major Havoc, and Tempest--to name some more collectible games.

I'm sitting next to a working Space Duel and it is awesome.  I love the sound on Space Duel, especially on the bonus stage.

I agree, but even on my list, I'd take an equal condition Star Trek/Major Havoc/Gravitar over it.

I picked up one this past weekend for $250 in almost immaculate cosmetic condition.  The K6100 monitor works great, and the only problem is a RAM error (which should take one $2 part to repair).

It needs a new control panel overlay, and the previous owner already had removed the trashed one and sanded off the glue.  Glad about that, since that's the part I hate doing the most.    :)

Once it's working, it's staying in my collection.  I always loved that game.
Side Arms, Slam Dunk, Xybots, Arachnid Galaxy darts, Pac Man Plus, Dr. Who, Gauntlet, Centipede cocktail, Hyperball, Tempest, Star Wars, Xevious, Super Hang On, S.T.U.N. Runner, Galaga, Space Duel.

Space Duel is a total MAME ready cab. For every sacrificed space duel, a star wars, tempest, or black widow gets brought back to life. There are more vector games needing monitors than there are monitors available for vector games. Case and point, I won a space duel cab with a working WG6100, for 1 dollar more than a WG6100 being sold as untested. I, of course, parted the space duel and used the monitor to save my Tempest.

Note that the original poster did not say he was reusing the monitor to save a rarer vector cab, only that he was raping the one he has.  Until he says that, I consider it just another vector cab wrongly MAMEd.

The demand for Space Duel is miniscule compared to the demand for Star Wars, Major Havok and Tempest. Every Space Duel that dies brings one of those back to life. It is simply one of those "can't save them all" situations.

Space Duel is the single best cabinet to use a SVG card in, although that requires actually finding one with a monitor and keeping said monitor.

Also, there are a metric ton of Asteroids and Asteroids Deluxe machines floating around, and all 3 are VERY similar. (And looking at things longterm we probably already have more working machines from the Asteroids trilogy than collectors will really even want).

They have a Centipede CP on there with a joystick and buttons.  I think it would be good and helpful to add it (with a disclaimer of some kind).

Wow I guess I should have elaborated as to not get hit by the verbal stones!

I am restoring everything on this cab minus the monitor and cp.  I personally cannot afford to replace the monitor and want to geez the cab intact.

Yes I am MAMEing the cab out but I'm doing it in a way that'll preserve it.  The cab is just to beautiful.

They don't make the vector monitors anymore, but they do make ALL the repair parts for them, so any of the Atari color vector monitors are repairable. Someone will want the monitor, I promise you, you'll likely get $100 or more for it, even in non-working condition.

you can put it on the homebrew section, futhermore the upload system lets you enter some description and comments.
it's up to you.

even if it's not the original perect replica, your art may used as a starting point to recreate the original repro. and thus may usefull for some people.

They don't make them all in one place, though, so it's expensive and takes some skill to make a vector chassis from entirely new parts, that's for sure...

Coincidently enough I saw a Space Duel for sale this weekend at the Oklahoma Video Game Exhibition. I love that game I was very tempted. Sadly the seller wanted $900 for it, which seemed quite a bit on the stout side even for a hard core vector addict like myself. I really wanted it, but just couldn't bring myself to pay that much for it. I had to make myself happy with the lone Vectrex that I saw for sale at the show, I did manage to talk myself into bringing that home with me.

Good job, even a minty Space Duel isn't worth anywhere near $900.  A Star Wars, yes, a Tempest, maybe, a Major Havoc, yes.  Not a Space Duel.

LOVE that Vectrex, I have several and most of the games, nearly all homebrews, and have been working on a Vectrex game myself.   Feel free to shoot me any questions you may have about it, games, or anything related to it.

Four weeks... my PSX adapter took 4 months.  Worth the wait, though.  Where else can you get such an awesome handmade product?
