« on: June 16, 2005, 08:38:01 am »
When running MAME, sometimes when i'm in the middle of playing a game, it'll freeze up.

Dittos here - I don't have any answers. but I will be following this thread as I'm having the same problem.  I think part of mine is that I just have too much stuff on the hard drive and need to get a computer dedicated to MAME (tm), but we'll see...

Oh good, i'm glad i'm not the only one.  My computer was specifically built for MAME, plus, i only have like 100 games on the HD, i haven't even used 1/6th of it yet, so i know my computer's memory is not bogged down.

Hopefully someone will have an answer.

I think I had that problem (no, mine was just general sluggishness), when I was running McAffee anti-virus, switched to Norton and then to AVG and it went away.

I never had it completely lock up though.

Any screensavers or system idle timer settings?

What OS?  What's running in the background when you Ctrl-Alt-Del?

Does it always happen after the PC's been run for the same amount of time?  Always at the same point in the game?

No, it happens at all different times....like yesterday, i was getting ready to play RBI Baseball and it froze during the opening national anthem, then i played Salamander for a good hour with no problems after that.  Then later on in the evening, i was playing turtles in time, and it froze up on about the 4th level.  I can't escape out or anything...when i hit control alt del, it says "this program is not responding, end task?"  the programs that are running are windows, dos, and mame.  When i alt+tab and go to windows, or the dos screen, then tab back to Mame, it's running again.  I don' t have any virus software running, i don't have the internet...not sure what's going on?  Seems like mame just locks up?

I had a USB 2.0 hub locking up a Win98 machine I was using, but it was outside of MAME, and C-A-D wouldn't work either, FWIW.

I thought I was the only one!

I ran it from the commandline to see if it would tell me what was going on.  All I remember was it gave me some kind of direct x error.  I can't remember exactly though.

It did stop when I upgraded to the latest version however.
