Best way to notch 5/8 wood for T-Molding?
« on: December 10, 2002, 10:18:04 pm »
I have been working on my mame cabinet and am nearing completion.  However I have a great deal of t-molding and have just realized that I have no tools with which to use for putting the t-molding into the sides.  I have heard that a router is the best toold to use, but can someone give me some specifics on how to do this, how to keep my line straight, etc?  Any help is appreciated.  Heres a pic of my cabinet for anyone who is interested

1/16" slot cutting router bit.  That is all you need.  Just go ask for one at Home Depot.  Thats pretty much what everyone uses for the best results for 3/4" and 5/8" t-molding.  The router will keep the line straight automatically.

If you have a dremel tool and no router, there is a nice router attachment that's cheaper than buying a full-size router.

router is best IMO. you can always rent one. a dremel will work nicely with the slot cutter or its own router attachment. i used that and only problem was the bit was too big so i had to hot glue the molding in. its quite a pain in the ass for such a small thing as t molding but nothing major. as always expect to spend more time on it than u planned. make sure you go slow and CHECK THE BIT FOR TIGHTNESS OFTEN. i had something loosen and it almost caused a problem.
