ED: Game Grid announcement and progress
« on: June 08, 2005, 07:45:34 pm »
Well here's progress so far (marquee has since been installed).  Now all thats left to do is:
BEZEL, paint, side artwork, build the floor, reinforce the cab, seal the control panel to beverages, attach the ashtray and finally, complete control panels 2 (Xenophobe style joys, trackball and 2 spinners) and 3 (Driving / Yoke / analog stuff)

Any opinions? or suggestions for sideart or bezel?  Actually I'm not quite sure about how I'm going to do the bezel yet.  THere may be a gap between the panel and bezel.  Must solve that.  Everything else is art.

I also have a documented diary, so i guess I need a website too huh.  *whew*

I see you're adding an ashtray. I'm not one to pass judgement about one smoking or not, but don't smoke around your cab. In a year it'll be covered in a thick filmy yellow substance, and the internals will be coated as well.

I do a lot of PC repair on the side, and the cases that come in from people who smoke are DISGUSTING. The same will happen to your cab, and once that smoke film gets on it, it pretty much never comes off. Save the smoking for when your away from this kick-ass cab in the making.

Even if you and your buddies do smoke (I have smoked off and on my whole adult life, and my best friend smokes 2 packs a day, so I understand), you are probably not going to want an ashtray, you are instead going to want a "no smoking while playing rule".

You can't really smoke while you are using both hands to play, if you try then you will just make a mess.

Cool CP artwork. I can't quite make out the green side though.

Is Alucard from Castlevania? Personally I would have chosen Alucard from Hellsing. 8)

Yep Alucard from Castlevania.  The Green panel is ALEX and RYAN from River City Ransom.  Here's the graphic for the panel and marquee.  I just have to do two more (rotating panel).  *sigh* took me 2 weeks to get that one done.  Then I have to do side panel art.  I've made the marquee already and named the machine "Game Grid."  You'll see in the artwork that each player has a "ENTER GRID" button. :)

ANyone have suggestions on how to do the bezel?  (note the rotating monitor issue)

Yeah... This whole project can be thought of as a "pool table" meaning I won't be playing it much by myself.  My buddies and I don't really smoke unless we are having a few and hanging out.  The Box is in the garage (no where to put it in the house yet) and I've tried smoking while playing which doesn't work at all.  But I if I had an ashtray (like two side mount trays) it would work a lot better.  Once its in the house though it won't matter.  No smokes in 'da house.  ;D

Very cool CPO. I don't know if you've had your marquee printed yet, but when I first looked at it, the "i" looks like an "s."

I used to smoke in my garage w/ all my video games. Then again, I wasn't considered a heavy smoker (I've since quit) but I never ran in to problems, aside from the fact that I wish I had an ash tray on my cab. As long as you're not hot boxing it really isn't an issue.

I'll probably stick to the ashtray decision.  I can always take em off. :)

Anyone have suggestoins on how to seal buttons and joys so if there's a liquid spill it doesn't seep under to the artwork and ruin it?

I'm already going to have to do a reprint because of seeping beer.  :-\

Is your CP covered with Lexan? I would think that would take care of most problems.

No, I used Plexi.  BUT I will still have the same problem if I don't put something in the button holes and joystick holes to seal the artwork off.  The artwork is sandwiched between the plexi and the board.  The liquid get sucked into that small space very easily like a sponge.  Maybe I just use some kind of regular utility sealant sticky stuff.

If your artwork is vinyl you won't have a problem. If your artwork is paper you're just asking for trouble. Sounds to me like you've got paper artowrk.

Yeah i have photo quality paper at work.  We have a 46" plotter and the Boss gave me free reign to it. (hp designjet 500)  As far as vinyl artwork... They can do that?  Or do you mean just laminated paper?

Bloinkxp,  I found that GOKU online somewheres.... Took a while to find.  I think I have the original image somewhere if you want it!

Most of the professional places can print on vinyl or a similar material.

The thing is, if you can print these at work, at low cost or free, why not just print a couple and use them as needed?

Sure they can do that! No, I don't mean laminated paper (though that might work too if you could find a way to do it).

Yeah, printing isn't cheap. If you're getting poaper for free, I'd find a way to laminate it. I think markrvp did that with his. If you're leaving the paper bare, though, you're gonna find yourself replacing it everytime you spill something.

I don't think it's such a good idea to seal your control panel. What if something goes wrong? You'd have to break it just to fix it.

Another alternative might be rubber or felt washers. That wouldn't help with the joys, but it's a quick fix for the buttons.

Thanks!  I'd really like that Goku image.  I am thinking of an arcade based around DBZ...
Saiyan-Cade or something  ;D

Nice!  I'd like to see that!  I'll get you that image when I get home.  There's another real sweet image of goku on the poster that came with DBZ: Budokai for PS2. (half-image)  You should look for that to put on your saiyan-cade.
