Guncon 2 to standard TV - have no idea what I'm doing wrong
« on: August 16, 2007, 08:50:43 am »
Got a couple of Guncon 2's off of Ebay... unfortunately they came without the external cable so I'm using a piggy-back RCA cable to hook from the composite out of my TV card to my TV.  I tried loading both SMOG's Guncon2 driver and WinGun but neither seems to recognize the gun.  When I first hooked up the gun, Windows 98SE recognized it and I pointed it to SMOG's driver.  Windows doesn't appear to say anything is wrong.  On power up, it does read the gun as some kind of mouse but it's really jittery, and I can't control my mouse anymore with my real mouse, even if the gun is aimed off-screen.  If I unplug and replug the gun into the USB port then it doesn't recognize it at all but I do get mouse control back via my regular mouse.  I have to restart the PC in order to get it to recognize it as a mouse again.

I tried going through the forums and helps but got a little lost on this... seems most of the posts are for hooking to PC monitor, not a standard TV.
Should this work?  What am I doing wrong?

well, first of all smog's driver and windows 98 don't really get along... but some people have gottent it to work. so good luck.

second it is ALWAY going to be jittery. mine jitter so bad that i cant really use it as a mouse, double clicks are impossible!

third win98se only supports one mouse, so you'll never get the gun and mouse to work together also you may have problems with two guns, only the first gun will work in windows, but in games both should work. for some games you may have to use "the troubleshooter" it is for act labs guns but works with guncon2s as well. http://thetroubleshooter.home.mindspring.com/

upgrading... oh wait i should put that in quotes... "upgrading" to WinXP will fix the two mouse problem as well as the smog driver problem.

you could try guncon2pc driver, i have had more success in win98se with it you can get it at: http://www.acornscity.com/guncon/index.php the forums on  that site are also a wealth of information.

I had a feeling it was something like this.
I wonder if I would get better performance if I unhooked my
mouse and just left the lightgun attached? (not a permanent
solution but just something to try)

If the gun is ALWAYS going to be jittery, how do you use it
at all for any games?

I did try the guncon2pc driver from acorn, that didn't help.

The main thing that is keeping me from upgrading to Xp
is that for some reason Visual Pinball screws up on exit
under XP but not Win98SE... I'd like to get that figured out
first.

Edit:  never mind, the latest version of Visual Pinball (alpha 7)
fixes this.

To XP we go!

first: No

second: you can use it in games because for the most part we aren't talking very high resolutions. the jitter declines with resolution. second games don't require a huge amount of accuracy, if you get close it counts a kill.

if smog's and acorns drivers are behaving the same it isn't anything to do with your guns, so it is defiantly the OS.

Ok I installed WinXp but some weird things started to
happen...

Had to reinstall the NT drivers for my Diamond Viper Z200
video card becuase I only had the Win98 drivers installed.
Before this, windows stretched the screen funny because
it was trying to run at 800x600.  The Viper driver seems to
have corrected this and am running at 640x480 (outputting
to my tv via S-video, although now it's no longer selectable --used
to be, I could select whether I wanted to output s-video
or composite out)

Some other peculiarities:
- my trackball still works as my USB mouse but every once
in awhile now it freezes
- When I try to run Marvel vs Capcom or similar games, they
don't run at fullscreen 640x480 anymore...  my mame.ini
is set at auto for all resolutions, changing it to 640x480 doesn't
help.
Other games (Asteroids) seem to run at the correct res with
artwork.

Edit:
Well, fixed part of it... had to turn off ddraw and turn on direct3d.
MVSC works ok (haven't checked the FPS yet but think it should
be ok).
Still don't know what's going on w/ the mouse.
Also, wasn't able to get the Guncon driver to install right yet...
it's looking for some inf file?
