Anyone try Silverjuke yet?
« on: June 04, 2005, 09:10:28 pm »
I've just started loading it up and testing it out with my collection and it seems to handle all my CD's, but I'm not wanting to use a keyboard.

Anyone try this out yet and try to configure anything?

Check in the Juke Software sticky for what and where to download.

I tried it and like it a bit but the lack of control customisation means it is no good for what I need.

On the plus side I liked all the plug-ins available as it is winamp based.  I have been trying for ages to get a standalone audi visualisation program to use with SKJukebox, but I think I have finally found the solution here:
http://draves.org/bomb/

This program can be used as a screensaver in Windows by copying all the files and sub directories to the windows\system32 folder and renaming bomb.exe to bomb.scr (gives an error message when selecting in desktop properties but still works.

I'm trying to figure out if creating a new skin will allow the customization, but I can't figure out how to edit the ini.  Not that I don't know how to do that, but I can't for the life of me find out where the damn thing IS!  Normally, with every OTHER juke out there, the ini file is in the program folder, which isn't the case here.

I've had a hard time with the site (I believe the developer to be from Germany, and web presence REALLY isn't a strong suit, but I found the forum FINALLY) but I'm gonna start asking questions on the forum there to see if this can be worked out.  For 28 Euro's, this almost seems like VMJ-Europe.....I've got Drive Image so I can keep testing this thing out to see if what I want can be done.

I had no idea it was WinAmp based.  Are you referring to the modules integrating with WinAmp?  I've got no qualms with WinAmp other than I prefer other players, so me not having any WinAmp ANYTHING installed I am thinking it uses modules of 'em.

I'll check out that link you've got.  I like SK, but obviously it can't work EXACTLY like VMJ (even though the "tech support" is WAY better - Kudos SalmonKing) and I just ain't diggin' the song selection....quite the quandry for me, and I've been commissioned to make a juke for the church youth group, so I need to figure a workable solution out toot-sweet.

Thanks for the response!

I think I imagined the winamp connection just read this on the site:

Winamp-compatible modules are supported by Silverjuke for Windows, there is no need to install Winamp for this purpose. See below for a list of available modules.

What is it about VMJ that you can't do with SK.

OK, I gotcha.  I haven't tinkered with any of the modules because I want to get the controls right first before tinkering with more esoteric stuff, thanks for the tip.

What is it about VMJ that you can't do with SK.  My main problem is that I miss the mpeg support in VMJ but maybe Salmon King will get around to this one day although he has made it pretty clear it's not a priority.  Oh well I'll just continue with the gentle nagging.

When you refer to mpeg support, what is missing?  I haven't used SK much other than to see what it looks like and see how it picks up folders, and it recognized all my mp3's...are you referring to mpeg's for visualizations?

I think I was ambiguous when I said "exactly like VMJ"....I meant it looks almost identical to it, but it won't work the exact same way, such as song selection and whatnot...just niggling little things that I realize can't infringe on another design.  Really, I'm thinking I've got to investigate SK more, because the only thing I don't really like is the small windows (haven't tinkered with setup, so I'm referring to new install look) for each album and the big-ass clunky looking selection area....also I haven't tried to find out if I can replace the small visual with the album art.

I guess I haven't looked at SK well enough to comment fully on it, but something just seems "off" in the standard install look - enough that my funny little brain hasn't wanted to investigate further since first looking at it.

The scrollbars....I guess I shouldn't say anything about SK until I give it a better shot, but for some reason, I just like the "look" of Silverjuke more than VMJ or SK

Isn't personal taste a wierd thing? :P ::)

I've been watching the CD skin developments with WinCab and downloaded the lateset version the other day.

And out of interest Drew exactly how often do you change your avatar?

Whenever the mood strikes me....or if I find something I think'd make a good one :D

Plus, I couldn't very well revive the Av Fight thread with an old tired av, now could I? ;)

You can always try the new CD skins in WinCab Jukebox.. :) It will look like whatever you want it to look like with some tinkering in the skin... and it'll adapt to just about any control scheme you can throw at it.

Chris, thanks for chiming in.  I'll certainly check it out.  I've always liked your proggie, but was wanting something more CD based instead of singles-based.  I was gonna shoot for a singles-based juke for a friend, and yours is PERFECT for that, and if you can now set up a different skin to make it CD-looking, yours has the inside track.

Oh, and I also hate you for giving me yet another thing I have to try out ;) :P
