Wiring up a button to shut down the computer
« on: June 04, 2005, 04:40:37 pm »
i'm planning my cp layout and in the project arcade book it mentions having a button to shut down the computer.

has anyone done this and if so could you explain how you achieved it?

It's pretty well documented in other threads on this board already, but here's my attampt at a readers digest version.

Every computer mother board has a power switch used for turning the computer on / off. The switch used is a momentary switch just like an arcade button. Simply follow the switch from your computer case from the button and either splice in some wires there or remove the wires to the button (leaving the motherboard wires intact) and extend those wires with crimpers and som quick disconnects to match the rest of your buttons.

Many have done this. But I wouldn't recommend having the power button on your control panel. Maybe in the CP or behind it or even underneath it. I usually wire mine and mount them so I have to enter the coin door to get to the switch; but to each their own.

Good luck, hope this helps... if not try the search feature... If you dont like the boards search feature.... try google.

Check out the (in beta) cabinet-power page for my recommendation :)

Saint, where can I get that ignition remote? I tried eBay, the link provided, and google, but I found nothing.

All I did was tap into the existing power button in the case and run some wires to a regular arcade button on top of my machine. Now I can use the button or the switch on my case.

Works really good!  :D
