is anyone using a flatscreen monitor?
« on: May 31, 2005, 04:21:47 pm »
i am building a new machine and i just contacted sharp image and they said they have 27" flat screen monitors for $375. that is a whole lot cheaper the the $455 i have been paying for the kortec regular tube monitors from betson. what i wanted to know is how do these flat screens look in a cabinet? the only flat screen monitor i have seen in a cabinet is the new golden tee and it looks cool, but i am afraid it might look a little weird playing the classics with the flat screen.
any comments/advise?

I'd pay the extra money.  If you're using an arcade monitor at all, you're presumably going for authenticity.  You're not going to get that with a flat screen.

I can't speak from experience, but I bet it would only take a few minutes to get used to it. With that much of a price difference, there would be no question in my mind. If the image is the same, I don't think the curve matters much.

I would take image quality over authenticity any day, but that's me.

I think authenticity is important, but I don't think you'll notice on a monitor of that size anyways.

How many classic games were played on a 27" monitor? I can't think of many. The size were be more of a factor than the curve. I say go with the flatscreen and save some money.

I would go with the flatscreen since it is cheaper and it will eliminate most glare problems you would encounter.  Plus you are essentially getting a larger viewable area with the flat.  Just my opinion.

Shoulda made this a poll...

I vote FLAT!
If there's bees in the trap I'm catching em
By the thorax and abdomen
And sanding the stingers down to a rough quill
Then I dip em in ink, and I scribble a bit
But if it they wriggle then I tickle em until they hold still
Lemme say it again
In my land of pretend
I use bees as a mf'n pen

Once you go flat, you'll never go back.  All my screens on PCs and cabs are flat screen CRTs.

I'd like to learn more about Sharp Image's monitors.  How may they be contacted?  Do they have a website?  Did some Google searches but didn't find anything.

I use nothing but flat 21" Dell Trinitron's in my cabinets. Beautiful picture, nothing weird about it.
Plus you can make a quick and easy bezel out of black posterboard or something similar, since the glass and monitor are flat.

Newer games are going to flat monitors, curved monitors are on the way out. Buy the cheaper one.

If you're thinking about a flat tube, Happ's got 'em on sale for $390 this month, too.

I wouldn't bother with these until there are more guns that work with flat screens.

Other problem is, while these screens are great for viewing still pics, or using PC apps, I notice a lot of screens have streaking or fringing on sharp, rapidly moving graphics.  Be careful what type of screen you're getting, you'll most likely have to go for a more expensive type (not LCD) to avoid this issue.

I believe you're right.  I am curious to know if a flat CRT gets along with an Act-Labs gun, though.  Anyone?

The curvature ought to have little to do with the reliability of a light gun. If it was even a factor at all, I'd say it would work better on a flat crt.

When our old, curved RCA TV went out in November (right in the middle of cabinet building), my wife found a great deal on a flat screen Samsung at Best Buy.  It now sits in our cabinet.  I've tried both classic and new games on it, and both look fine.  You may lose some authenticity, but as someone above me said I'll take the sharper image any day.
