Yet another 49-Way question - how many do I need?
« on: May 31, 2005, 04:02:45 pm »
OK, here is my question:

I am interested in building a small 2 player cabinet (ie 2 joysticks total, not one for each player.  I also know that this means 2 player smash TV is out)

I am already sold on needing one 49-Way with a GP-Wiz 49, but for my second joystick, can I get away with a good standard 8-way stick, such as a P360 (I can get a used one cheaper than a 49-Way)?

Are there any games where a single player needs two joysticks that are not both 8-way, or are there any games that are two player simultaneous where the two joysticks are not both 8-way?

Still a noob, thanks for the help,

Karate Champ and Assault, but otherwise, I don't think so.

The trick will be finding an 8-way stick that feels similar to the 49-way so when you play simultaneous games one player doesn't complain about using the "bad" stick - whichever one they think that is.

I built a panel very similar to what you are talking about, although mine is 1 player only (or 2 player alternating).

My first joystick is a 49-way and the second stick is a Wico Leafswitch 8-way.  I designed it this way with Robotron in mind as I believe this is the best joystick for shooting with Robotron.

Playing games like Crazy Climber where the two joysticks should feel the same works fine as even though the 2 joysticks feel different, they are not that terribly different as to affect gameplay.

Having said this, I will probably replace the Wico with a 49-way at some point and build another panel with 4 Wicos for 2-player Smash TV.

Thanks to both of you for the feedback.  I think that I should probably just suck it up and pay the $120 (approx) for both sticks and both encoders.

Probably the best option.

The second best, if you really wanted to save the dough, would possibly be to mount the 49-way as stick 1 but use a 1-1/8 inch mounting hole, and use a Happ Super or Competition for Stick 2.  Mounted this way, the stick is physically restricted (not full travel) to the throw of the Super or Comp, but the feel should be similar.

Someone (Armax ?) on the board tried this and wasn't crazy about it, as I recall, though.

OK, here is another question.  I will be putting a spider on at least one of them, should I put a spider on both of them?  I am worried that the spider might have some disadvantages in some gaming situations, however, I really want Sinistar to play as I remembered and so will need at least one of the sticks to have a spider.

Old memory vignette: There used to be an arcade that was over 40 km away (which was several hours transit ride) but it had two great games that I couldn't get enough of, Sinistar and Warrior.  I couldn't find these games in any other arcade in my town.  I made the trip several times that summer (I think it was '82.)   I was truly obsessed because at the time I couldn't convince my friends to come along with me (too far/expensive) so I would always have to find some other kid in the arcade (read: stranger) that would play Warrior with me.  It seems ridiculous to me now that I would go to such lengths because at the time when I went, I would only have about $4 to spend on the machines anyway.  Contrasting what I used to have to do to play these games with having (hopefully soon) a MAME cab in the basement seems almost ... sinful  ;D

What I would recommend is putting a spider on one stick and seeing what the difference in feel was in two player fighting games, then deciding.

That or making a dedicated Sinistar CP and a Street Figter CP that you could swap.

I'm going with the swappable panels.  I definitely don't think a spider would improve the performance feel of the 49-Ways for fighters.
