Good deal?
« on: May 31, 2005, 03:47:58 pm »
I just bought an original dedicated Mortal Kombat on ebay for $150.  I go to pick it up Thursday.  According to the seller, the game is in good working condition, however, it may need a new monitor board (approx $50).  Did I get a good deal?

Anyone know where I might find such a board?  I figure I should start looking now, although I plan on testing the MK out thoroughly before buying anything.

If the monitor is not working, the jury is totally out.  MK boards are as common as napkins.

Not if it's a DEDICATED MK.  They're not anywhere as common as the conversion kits.

Not as common as the kits but still not all that rare.

Could we see a link to the auction?  That would help the discussion a lot.

Hrm... we still have to hold out because there's no pics of the sideart, which is important on an original dedicated.  Is that a 25" or a 19"?  If it's 25, you got a good deal just from that, if it's 19, you're still waiting to find out.

Yeah I'm not sure...  I go to pick it 7pm on Thursday after work.  My palms are all sweaty just thinking about it, lol.  This will be my first arcade cabinet.

I'll take pictures of it when I get it.  :D

Its 25", if the side art is in good shape you got a good deal, i would just put i new 25incher in there and you're done.

Enjoy.

My brother owned an original MK so I can tell you that's an original Midway cab with the 25" monitor in it. The cabinet is definitely a Midway cabinet, but it looks like the CPO is not original. Since we can't see the sides or the coindoor, I can't tell you exactly which Midway game it is.

Alot of games were put into that style of cab. Notice the wierd button configuration, though. It dooesn't look like an MK. The buttons are too close together vertically. That leads me to believe we're not even looking at an original control panel, not just the overlay. That looks almost like a modified Street Fighter layout. There's only 2 Midway games that I know of to use that layout - Killer Instinct and Killer Instinct 2. The original Killer Insinct used red t-molding, too.

Well.... it could be the original, but the CPO has definitely been replaced.

It would be a lot cheaper to fix that one, next step up would be replacing the chassis... a whole new 25" monitor is expensive!

Congrats on the purchase, that first cab is always a great feeling.  You'll play the crap out of it, too, unlike later cabs that you'll get and barely use.

Um... No. ;)
KI had the typical SF layout.

You're definately right about it being a Midway cab & un-original CPO though.

Great Cab regaurdless.
Build a new CP (just the top), get a J-Pac & Arcade-VGA & you're in business!
Just don't hose any 100% art in the process. (Those full side-arts are cool! & not too cheap)

When I said "that layout" I should have been more explicit. I was refering to the afore-mentioned street fighter layout.

I didn't say destroy anything on that one. I said get a new CP to do what you want with (not destroy the original), I said get hardware that works with the existing wiring (not rip it out & install CAT5/IDE/Parallel cableing).
Who cares anyhow?

& Who says it's unnecessary? Perhaps on his budget, he can't afford 2 cabs & if he got a working one for a good price. Why shouldn't he swap in a different game? Heck he could even have a MK themed front end!

A picture of the side of the machine is all we need. That pretty much makes all the difference in the world.

Of course, that particular cabinet is my #1 MAME cabinet of choice. IMO it's the perfect size and shape.

I don't think I am going to MAME it, that wasn't my intention when I bought it.  I might swap out Jamma PCBs from time to time, but no MAMEing...  I'm gonna build my own MAME cabinet when I'm ready for that.  I pick it up tomorrow!!   :D

I wouldn't feel too guilty slapping a PC in there with a J-PAC. That way you could play all your other MK games along with anything else.

You could leave just about everything wired up just as it is. There's so much room on the inside of those things. A PC could easily share real estate with the MK board.

You could always switch the JAMMA harness back over to play MK and then switch over to the PC to play everything else.

I did this with my first machine. It only took about 10 minutes to undo the changes I made to it when I finally sold it.

The overlay might not be correct, but it looks fine, I would leave it as it is now.

Anyone know where I can find a monitor board?  The tube says Zenith...  it comes to a skinny tube at the end, and there are pins arranged in a circle, but nothing there.  I'm assuming it's some kinda board with capacitors on it?

You actually need a whole chassis, and truthfully there is a chance the tube is bad as well.

I'd try an 8-liners chassis for it.

The tube is good, according to the seller, it just needs the new chassis.    I'm gonna look inside the cabinet, and try to get some info off the monitor.  The tube itself looks good from what I can see.  Grey all over, and no brown spots.

Ok, just realize that working 25" chassis are not as easy to come by as ones for 19" monitors. In general a missing chassis pretty much means you need a whole working monitor, as there is usually no price difference between a working chassis and a working monitor (all the value is in the chassis, people throw tubes away left and right, I have personally chucked a dozen of them in the past few years).

What about a chassis from 8-liners?  Are they good?  How much would that run?

I would hope it would be cheaper to go that route rather than get a whole new 25" monitor.

It's probably a K7000 Wells Gardner monitor...
I 've had a couple of Midway cabs with Zenith Tubes...

Contact Pat Danis @ patdanis AT comcast.net

He's in the Dallas, TX area, but he's been a great guy & does chasis work.
I think the last time I talked to his he had a chasis for a WG K7000 for around $95 + shipping.

You do realize they don't work, right?  I would either buy a working one or fix the one you have.  Any chassis that does not explicitly say it works should be considered a parts chassis.  It's too easy to say "untested" with something that has no chance of working again.

On the other hand, puting in a bid for a couple of dollars means if you get them you'll have a couple of parts chassis laying around, in case you need the parts later...
