Replacing Imperial PS/2 trackball encoder wheels
« on: December 06, 2002, 06:00:52 pm »
I received an email about replacing the encoder wheels on the Betson Imperial PS/2 trackballs with my Model 3 encoder wheels, so I tried it out.

I put the Model 3 wheels on, and it gave a good speed boost.  It's hard to quantify exactly how much, but my best guess would be around 30-40%.  The curious thing is that replacing the encoder wheels reversed the directions on the trackball.  The trackball had to be rotated 180 degrees to control the cursor properly.  It must have something to do with the different tooth size/spacing.  I wasn't surprised, though, because the same thing happened on the spinners when I changed from the 24T encoder wheels to the new Model 3 one.

The OEM encoder wheels have a small center hole, just large enough for the screw to go through it.  The Model 3 encoder wheels have a .26" diameter hole, so small flat washers had to be added to both sides of the encoder wheel to keep it in place.

Here's some pics of the encoder wheel replacement:  http://www.oscarcontrols.com/imperial
(I didn't feel like putting together a webpage, so the pictures are in chronological order.  :) )

As I've mentioned before, if anyone is interested in puchasing just encoder wheels, email me to buy them.  Going through my website will charge you $6 for shipping, but I can put those in an envelope and send via USPS 1st class for a lot less.
