In search of an old PCI sound card or two
« on: May 30, 2005, 05:18:07 pm »
I'm trying to get Vantage setup on a few old machines I've got here - it seems to be working great but none of them have soundcards.

So if anyone out there has an extra soundblaster or two sitting on the shelf let me know!  The cheaper the better -  Or if you are looking to trade for something let me know what you are looking for.

Thanks!

Why PCI?  Doesn't a motherboard that old have ISA?

They aren't that old actually. I've got three systems I'm trying to bring back to life.  I've already given up on the one that has ISA (and it actually had a soundcard in it).    The others are a 300mhz and a 600mhz.

I may actually just run mame on the 600 but I want it to boot from CD. Every time I have tried to put a HD in it and get an OS installed strange things happen and it ends up back in the attic.

Does anyone know any good computer surplus sites (computer surplus outlet is no more apparently)?  I guess I'll start checking out the ebay...

Duh - I'm an idiot.  Yes Peale you are correct - they do have ISA also (been so long since I messed with ISA that it just didn't register so either or should work fine (and now I just need one)

I have a spare PCI Sound Blaster Live card. Yours if you want to cover the shipping.

Let me check.  I think I have some SBlives also.

Never thought I'd see the day when a SB Live! was a giveaway item.  I used to lust after them when all I had was a POS.

Are there DOS drivers available for them?

I wouldn't use a SBLive on a DOS setup.  The CompUSA-brand ALS-based soundcard is a pretty good option, and I think it's only like $19.99

SBlive can be a bear in DOS if your motherboard is highly integrated.  I did run the cards on a DOS 6.22 machine for a while.  Didn't have a problem.  The motherboard were Intel BX / LX based mostly.  One was an Intel 820 (Rambus...).  Let me dig around.
