Can I mount my 49-way the wrong way?
« on: May 27, 2005, 08:12:05 pm »
I'm not sure if it's been asked in all the 49-way talk, But I thought I remembered someone saying that the wires on the happs/midway 49-way must be on the left side.  Is this true?  Is there any way to make it work the other way around?

sounds like someone mounted their sticks wrong.....

Can't you just take the screws out and flip the stick around?

that is the set up if using Randys 49way encoder.

Yes, unbolt the bottom portion and flip it around...

I haven't mounted them yet.  The thing is, there isn't enough room for the wire side of these sticks in the CP.  If I can't have the wires facing a different direction, then I just can't have them in this CP.

I think you're SOL, unless you can map the directions in reverse in MAME.

That's what I thought, thanks

It may be POSSIBLE to do some creative cross-wiring to the interface, and get it to switch directions.
It's something you'd have to play with though.

I haven't tried this, so I'm not sure if it's possible.  But whatever you do, don't experiment while the device is powered.  I have a strong feeling that the joystick could be damaged if you do.

If you want to experiment like that. pull the USB plug, wait a couple seconds and then wire it before plugging it back in.

Better safe than sorry :)

I maybe should have mentioned that in my original post.

My guess is that, if you can get it to read the sensors in order for each axis, you should be able to change the orientation of that axis.

I knew that getting the sensors out of order shouldn't hurt because the interface is simply reading the state of each sensor.
If the sensors are completely out of order, it SHOULD just cause the cursor to jump around.

I didn't think about the possibility of someone trying it with the interface under power.

Proceed at your own risk.

You can DEFINATELY mount them the wrong way, and re-map the directions in MAME.  I'm currently using two 49-ways, one is mounted with the connector on the left, and one is mounted with the connector on the right.  Same reason as you, there was a button clearance issue on my control panel.

Works fine!

I have the same problem in my cabinet for my player 1 spot.  I tried all of the possible wiring combinations to use the GP-Wiz but they all failed.

As others have said, the mapping within MAME is the only way to do this.

That's funny.  I got so lucky mounting my 49 way joysticks.  The wires on the player 1 side actually touch the inside of the cabinet.  I used the template, but I didn't account for the little extra bit of space that the connector would take up.  At least it fits, although its a modular CP and sometimes wonder if the wires will scrape out of the connector.  If you use the template, definitely add another quarter inch or so on the connector side.

Cheers,
KenToad

It's not the ONLY way.  It's also (theoretically) possible to hook up the wires in a different order to swap the axes electronically.  Nobody's actually tried it yet, though.

Options are also mentioned in this thread:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,35820.0.html

Basically, there are 4 alternate wiring methods:

Troz has rotated the base plate and reattached it.  This allows the stick to be mounted vertically (Long dimension Vertical), but you still need the wires coming in from the left side of the stick.

Kremmit has mounted them with the connector on the right side, and presumably had to re-map the axes in MAME (only works with MAME).

Theoretically (untested) it should be possible to mount the sticks with the connector at the top or bottom and modify the wiring to swap the X- and Y- axis at the PCB board to GP-Wiz49 interface.

Theoretically (untested), it should be possible to mount the sticks with the connector on the right side and modify the wiring to swap the X- and Y- axis orientations at the PCB board to the GP-Wiz49 interface.

This is my untested guess on rewiring to reverse an axis:

swap XA & XC (or swap YA & YC)
run XD through inverter (or run YD through inverter)

I think it will work for williams, happs, and midway 49-way sticks. ;)

If it does, then you can possition the 49-way any of the 4 ways and hook up to the wiz49 or SJC interfaces.

so if you want the pins on top, swap all X for all Y, and then do above for X axis

pins bottom, again swap all X for all Y, and then do above for Y axis

pins right, just do above for both X & Y.

I'll see if I can test tonight.

Currently I'm trying to get my 49 way installed.  Unfortunately, there is only room to mount the joystick vertically.  To top it off, there is no room for the connector to stick off on the left, so I have to have my connector facing up as well.

I rotated the circuit card, and then swapped the X and Y wires. (XA, XB, XC and XD <---> YA, YB, YC, and YD) The X axis works fine (L is L, R is R) but my Y axis is inverted (U is D, D is U).

u_rebelscum, have you had a chance to try out your guess on reversing an individual axis yet?  In my case I would have to swap XA & XC and then run the XD through an inverter... Any recommendations on the specs for the inverter chip?

Keep up the good work!   :)

You know, you can just remap the analog axes in your MAME config.  I've got one running that way right now, works fine.

Unless you need it to work with apps other than MAME.

Yeah, I think I may do the MAME config remap for right now.. Eventually I would like to use these sticks on other emulators and some PC games.  I wonder if I can somehow invert an axis in the OS using the windows control panel..

Well, if I get around to adding in an inverter chip I'll let you all know if it works!

Thanks,

Well, after getting Daphne installed on my cab this weekend, getting the directions straightened out on my 49 ways has become top priority.  (Although Daphne allows you to remap keyboard keys, it doesn't allow you to remap any of the joystick inputs!)

I just placed an order for some inverter chips.  When they arrive, I'll install them and report on my level of success.
