Dragon's Lair: What version do I need?
« on: December 05, 2002, 10:18:51 am »
From what I hear, the best way to run Dragon's Lair for your cabinet would be to use Daphne.
In that case, you're only using the commercial software to get the Mpeg files right? Does it matter whether you're getting the CD Rom, DVD Rom, or DVD version? Whats the best solution for our application?

Yes it does matter which version.  Get the DVD-Rom version.

I would be intertested also in what is the best way to run these games.  When Andy Ward comes out with his VGA Arcade card I will be going to be running Win XP which gives me capabilties to run daphne.

WHY does it matter? Isn't the best method to rip the mpeg images and place them on your hard drive? Are the cd-rom images and dvd-rom images different?
Am I missing something here?

Yes the cd-rom and dvd-rom images ARE VERY different (quality wise)!!  You would be quite dissatisfied with the cd-rom version of the mpegs (very pixelated IMHO).  The dvd-rom version of the mpegs are a different story entirely.  They are just like playing the real arcade game again.

Excellent, thanks.
Digital Leisure has the 3 pack (Dragons Lair, Dragon's Lair II and Space Ace) for 60 bucks. I think I'll order them.

I've wanted to play Dragon's Lair for ages. Especially since I tell my friends I can play tons of games on my cabinet.... Guess what are the first 3 games they ask if I can play on my cabinet? Star Wars (don't have a yoke) Tron (don't have a spinner of trigger stick yet) and Dragon's Lair.. You just can't win sometimes.  ;)

At least I can start with getting DL running. ;D

I got the Digial Leisure Dragon's Lair CD, it looks serviceable at 800x600 maximized, but no doubt the dvd-rom version would look more like the original laserdisc.

One caveat is that I couldn't configure the "Sword" button to be the left-control button, which is how my cabinet's 1st fire button is.  So I have it set to the space bar, and I just have to remember to use the 3rd button on Dragon's Lair.  It doesn't start up maximized, I use one of player 2's buttons on the control panel to toggle full screen.

That's fine for as much as I play it, I stink.  The attract mode sure brings back memories though!

You do realize the 3 pack is for the cd-rom versions right?

No no no.  Digital Leisure offers a 3-pack DVD pack pack also.  1 DVD for DL.  1 DVD for SA. 1 DVD for DL2.  They are each on their own DVD.  You HAVE to get DVD-ROM versions (not DVD-Video) because by far the easiest way to get all the videos is to search for a little DOS command line utility called DVD2Daphne.  It will do it all for you automatically.  But it does require the DVD-ROM.

Regarding the version of the games on the DVD's....well if you search around a bit you can easily find the rom files for Dragons Lair and Space Ace.  There are a couple different versions of both.  Using those will determine what version of the game you actually play...regardless of the MPEGs.

I got the 3 DVD pack from DL and it's freaking awesome.  Too bad daphne doesn't yet support DL2 (and it doesn't look like it will for a long time either).

I bought the DVD-Rom 3 pack about 8 months ago, ripped DL and Space Ace, and run them in Daphne.  They work great.  They haven't even gone up in price.  They also cost me $60.

I bought the 3 pack of dvds as well.  However they also work on "xbox", and for some reason these versions are not complete enough to rip.  Has anyone had success with these? (I think they are the anniv. set!).

I think those are are the DVD video versions aren't they? If so, they're very different.

DO NOT BUY THE 20th Anniversary 3 DVD SET!!!!

I have the DVD-ROM and DVD Release of Dragons Lair but didnt have Space ACE or TimeWarp and I bought the 20th Anniversary DVD SET from Electronic Boutiqe.

The Video Quality on Dragons Lair is very BAD!!!  Blurry in some scenes and sharp in others.   The Castle Intro is all the wrong colors and has Ghosting.

I tried both in my PC DVD-ROM and Standalone DVD Player and got the same results.

The Original DVD-ROM and Regular DVD Release did not have these problems.

It looks like they re-encoded the video to make it smaller so they could fit all that other extra crap on the DVD.
