New cabinet i picked up.
« on: May 22, 2005, 12:57:54 pm »
I picked up this cab friday evening.

From a very nice guy in my area. He just basically wanted it out of his garage.

He had about 10 cabs in his garage and needed some space back.

So he gave it to me for free,

I would say it was a Frogger, but the top (marquee area) isn't the right shape/length/depth. [http://klov.com/game_detail.php?letter=&game_id=7857]

Other than that...I'm not sure...

That's either an old Sega/Gremlin cab, or possibly a Centuri... BUT could also very well be a GENERIC. There were lot's of generics based on that cab design, 'round '79-'82

NO MORE!!

It's definitely Centuri (Time Pilot/Vanguard/etc...), or a really precise knock-off.
They had the bigger marquee area like that, the front cuts are the same, and the coin door is the same.
My bet is that it is a true Centuri cab.
Is there any info INSIDE that would tell for sure?

Also, you aren't gonna put a nice big panel on that cabinet without making it look terrible, and that cabinet will only hold a 19" monitor anyway.

If you plan on chopping that thing into a 4-player then just save yourself some time and throw it in the dumpster now, I can promise you it will end up there later if you chop it, you won't be happy with it, no one else will either.

My suggestion? It is already yellow and already has a sweet Q*Bert panel on it, go with that.

The Q*bert panel is peeling badly and looks terrible from close up.

I do agree with you on the chopping part.

I believe it would look bad.

I am no expert, but my custom cabinet is the same shape.  I modeled mine after "Loco-Motion".  I'd also heard it was a Konami cab... or possibly Phoenix.  The Loco-Motion had a monitor that was angled back and was also vertical.  I think Phoenix was close to straight up.  Not sure if the Phoenix was dedicated or a conversion though.

Well today i went and measured and pondered.

Here's what i came up with.  I have a 25" TV in one of the bedrooms of my home.

I measured it,  And it will easily fit into this cab, With the BUTT of the TV fitting in it

too.  I was amazed!  :o

As far as the control panel,  I studied and thought about that too.

I made a cardboard CP.  Nothing fancy,  Just to get a idea what i could work with?

And good news on that end too :D

I will be able to add that 4 player CP i want,  Without cutting or hacking up the

cabinet.  So if i ever get rid of it, I will be able to change it back.

With no permanent damage to the cabinet.

When i have time to make a more suitable CP model, I will take pictures and post,

And explain what i did?

Yes, I know exactly what you are planning, biggest issue is that the sucker might not be stable with a 4-player panel hanging off the front, and really, a 4-player cabinet isn't REALLY going to get any 4-player action (unless you happen to have 3 or four children).

I know from experience, adults will take turns, or play other games and NOT cram around a machine for 4-player action.

That's a pretty cool looking cabinet shape... might be weird with a 4-player panel on it, but I wish you good luck!

Thanks,

But i think all cabinets look weird with a big four player CP on them.

I mean how many times have you ever been into a arcade and saw

a cabinet with 4 sticks, a crap load of buttons, spinner, trackball and

maybe even a light gun on it?

Not many, If any i would think?

As far as this cabinet being unstable with a 4 player CP on it.

This thing i would think weighs in a good 150lbs. empty.

Then if i stick a 25" TV in it. and a PC in the bottom of it.

I don't think it will fall over or anything?

This cabinet weighs more empty, Than my Dynamo with everything in it.

I think paige meant the massive control panel would snap right off because of leverage. There's not a large shelf to put it on.

Actually, there's no shelf. To increase the size of the control panel, you'd either have to bust out a saw or obstruct the monitor.

Oh ok? I get it now.

I really do take PAIGE's advice to heart. He has always given me good useful info.

What i have in mind is not really that massive.  And i would not have to saw

anything.

This will involve a few screws here and there. But nothing that would not be

fixable.

And if i ever wanted to change it back i could.

No way that sucker weighs 150 empty. I can carry those up and down stairs by myself (without a dolly) when they are empty.

I invite you to come and pick this one up by yourself and carry it up and down the

stairs!  LOL!  It took me and my buddy both to get the damn thing on and off his

truck. We couldn't believe how heavy the damn thing is?

Then again,  Maybe you are built like old school HULK HOGAN?  :D

I would estimate that most arcade cabinets weigh around 200 pounds so with no monitor.. 200 - 45 = 155  ???  doesnt sound too out of the ordinary to me..  maybe paigeoliver is much stronger than he thinks he is  ;D

Paige, I'm thinking of building a MAME machine with a 27" SVGA monitor, but I don't know how I'm gonna get it up the stairs. Wanna come help me out?  ;D

By the way, buckethead, what you have in mind is very similar to what I did with my first MAME machine (converted from an old Bad Dudes). It was "sturdy enough", but I was never truly satisfied by how well it held up. And I used a LOT of bracing. I used about 6 feet of angle iron to brace it.

Thanks everyone for the great advice.

I will take it all to heart.

One thing is for sure,  Something will be done to this cabinet.

And i promise you this. It WILL look better than it does now.

Because yellow and black spray paint with the runs,

Just ain't gonna cut it.   >:(
