Arcade Beatmania Turntable? Help me out
« on: December 04, 2002, 07:45:10 am »
I've been observing this forum for quite some time but now I am stumped. I'm in the process of building a Beatmania machine so I can play 3rd-6th mix on my Japanese PSX2. I built the cab which turned out fantastic (lets hope I'm not moving soon). Put in a 15 inch subwoofer, 500 watts, 2 tweeters, and 4 midrange with neon on the speaker grills and along the side. It sounds amazing but those yesasia controllers are starting to annoy me. I need a few inputs on control issues. I'm going to use part number 57-2000-51 from Happs for the buttons put how exactly am I going to do the turntable? It seems pretty simple because when you turn the turntable you basically are just pressing right/left on the controller. If anyone knows a place that deals with official parts that would be FANTASTIC!!!  Also when that is resolved it probably would be in my best interest to hack a PSX2 controller huh?

Aren't you able to buy those turntables for the playstation? Couldn't you hack those in?

I was thinking about doing it that way. I already have 2 turntables. Maybe I'll go that route instead.

My PSX beatmania controller maps to up and down when I hook it up to my PC via a USB adapter. Also it releases the "direction" when you stop spinning. If you spin slowly it is the same effect as tapping the direction and letting go.

As an aside you can hack the PSX beatmania controllers to also be a cool spinner, which also makes the turntable action silky smooth. I've hacked mine with a hard disk bearning and attached an encoder wheel. i also broke out two mouse buttons on top of the controller. So as well as working much better as a PSX beatmania controller now, it can also be used for "proper" scratching using programs like Traktor (hence the mixer and HD580s in the photo).

Sorry for the awful photo quality - cheapo webcam and bad lighting coupled with useless photographer :-)
