vertical game on horizontal monitor too small
« on: May 20, 2005, 12:20:04 pm »
I have a WG D9200 and ArcadeVGA card (older one), running on Windows XP. I'm using the windows version of mame. I tried both avres and the mame resolution tool, and I'm having troubles with the vertical games. btw I read quite a few posts about this subject, but didn't find the exact same issue. Many people have problems with clipped or squished game screens, but my screen is just too small.

When I run a vertical game such as mspacman, it shows up in the middle of the screen and there is about 6 inches of black above and below the game. If I enable hardware stretch it does fill the screen, but I lose the crisp quality of my D9200. Rotating the monitor is not an option in my setup, so displaying vertically on a horizontal monitor is the way I'll have to go.

So my question, is there a resolution/setting that will make the game display bigger without the hwstretch, or do I just live with the small screen?

I tried different resolutions from the command line:

> mame mspacman -nohws -resolution 288x224
> mame mspacman -nohws -resolution 224x288
> mame mspacman -nohws -resolution 352x288

All of these bring up the same thing, same resolution in the middle of the screen.

TIA

Try running it at a resolution that Windows is more familiar with like 640x480.

Don't expect vertical games to very look good on a D9200 Windows ArcadeVGA setup.

Since that config is also the route I'm likely to take, what would you recommend as the best way to setup and display vertical games on a horizontal monitor?

If you've got a standard resolution arcade monitor, then arcadevga in windows does a decent job of displaying vertical games.  On a d9200, however, vertical games should be pixel perfect, but you'll need to run either Linux or DOS.  While I'd personally recommend using an Nvidia card for a Linux setup, arcadevga works just fine in X11.
