IPAC / KB are tempermental

I have an unusal problem.  My IPAC is only recognised if it is not plugged in during bootup.

If I boot with the IPAC plugged in, it isn't recognized by the OS, MameWah or Mame32.  And, neither is the KB conneced via passthru.  Oh, the kicker is that the IPAC Windows config program does see it and all the buttons properly.  Just not any other program.

If I have the KB plugged in during boot up, then unplug the KB and plug in the IPAC, all works well.  The KB will even work with IPAC passthru.

The KB by itself works fine.


My PC is an AMD 700mhz, 256m RAM, Win98se, MameWah, Mame32.

Is the Ipac hooked up via USB or Serial?

Everything is through the KB connector, and I'm using the cable provided with the IPAC.  There are no USB devices on the system.

The only thing I can reduce it to is possible the BIOS check is not picking up the IPAC.  The LED on the IPAC is lit though.

Couple of things I can think of - First disable USB keyboard support in the BIOS (if enabled).  Possibly the PC is seeing the I-PAC as a USB keyboard and not a PS/2 Keyboard.  (Does your I-PAC have jumpers for USB/PS2 mode and are they set - older boards did, I don't think newer ones do.

Surprised you don't get an error when the PC starts if it's not recognizing the I-PAC.  If you did, you might need to look for a setting labeled "Halt on" and set it to "All except Keyboard".

Finally, I had a similar problem, when I first started using the KeyWiz -

I plugged the Keywiz in and was surprised that Win98 said new hardware detected and installed the driver for a
