Question: Best joystick??
« on: December 03, 2002, 06:31:43 pm »
Question:  What is the best all around joystick?

These are the types of games it needs to work well with:
Mortal Kombat, TMNT, Gauntlet, Golden Axe, Pac-man, etc..

Basically a little of everything.  I'm fairly new to this, and have not purchased anything yet.  Plan to do a 4 player cab.

This sort of question is difficult to answer as everyone has their own opinion.  Many people seem to go for Happs supers which are a good all round stick.  Each of the different sticks has their own advantages and dissadvantages.  The super is supposed to be 4 / 8 way switchable by flipping over an hourglass piece at the bottom (which doesn't take long to do but you need to get inside the panel to do it and have a bit of room as well).  I have the supers and t-stiks.  The t-stiks have a switch on the side to swap between 8 and 4 way.  The supers stick is longer and moves further and easier than the t-stick.  For pac-man type games check out http://www.ultimarc.com as he has some sticks with the ball top which are small shaft and function in 4 way.  If you like a longer stick then the happs ones are good.

Basically the best way is to read through the boards, do a few searches and check out the menu on the left on the screen when in BYOAC main page.  This has a few writeups.  Also check out http://www.oscarcontrols.com/joycompare/joyreview1.shtml for some comparisons.  Work out whether you want ball or bat handle, longer or shorter stick, 8 or 4 way (can be achieved with one stick), this might make you decision simpler by ruling others out.

Hope this helps
Cheers

I have the supers and competitions.  I have to agree with Oscars review page, I like the competitions better than the supers.

With the supers, I was hitting the diagonals too easily.  You can bend the actuators to adjust the sensitivity.  I tried that,  but then I ended up have too much trouble hitting the diagonals...

Bat Handle, Not real long a stick, but not short either, 8 way?  I have heard that an 8way stick playing pacman isn't that bad... because the game does not recognize the diagonals?

Thanks for the review i'm checking it out now!

what I actually play? I listed a good cross-section.. but i would say fighting games and 4 way games are probably lower on the list than some of the others..  for the most part i'm not a fighting game buff but certain ones like original MK I like to play..

I think i'm going to order two supers since they are on sale right now.. see how those go..  planning a 4 player cab so worst case I can put those on the outside and buy some others for the middle.. hehe

Check out my site on the left.  It has a few pics (not very good) of the three types of sticks I'll be having and also the layout of my 4 player panel - you may find it interesting (then again you may think it's crap but I like it  ;D)

What encoder are you using for your Optical Rotaries?  I decided to go with the LS30s with Druin's Interface instead because I didn't know how to wire the Optical Rotaries

The optical rotaries require a optipac type interface, www.ultimarc.com It costs about the same as Druins interface but is much more versatile and can interface trackballs and spinners. It also works with more games.

It also depends on if you want joysticks that click when they turn.

I bought the optipac then found out it won't drive my ls30's. If I did it again I'd probably go with the optical rotarys. So I also bought Druins interface. Its tough to say though with out actually playing both and I don't know anyone local thats built either.

Is there any one in the west Michigan area thats built rotary joysticks that will let me visit?
