Dreamcast games with the VGA converter
« on: May 03, 2002, 10:06:15 am »
After all the dreamcast talk around... I started thinking about adding one to my cabinet.

but I'm running VGA monitor (EYGO)

I know theres a VGA converter out there.  But I also heard that they don't work with all the games.

I would go with a dual gun system... (anyone know about house of the dead 2?)

What other good gun games are there?

How about Guantlet legends?  does that work well in VGA mode?

Any other great games that I should be looking at?

Any good sites to find out what works with the VGA stuff?

I've been running a Dreamcast in my cab since December of 99.  I kept telling everyone on this board what they were missing out on :-).

HOD2 works with most VGA monitors....lately I've been having calibration problems on my monitor.  The other GREAT gun game is Confidential Mission.  There is a 3rd one out there that really sucks ("crimson x" or something).

As for VGA support, almost all games support VGA even if its not advertised on the back of the CD case.  Some you may have to do the VGA "trick" by booting up the DC in TV mode for 5 seconds, and then switching into PC mode (around the time the sega logo would appear).  This is what I have to do for VGA support on Bust A Move.

Gauntlet Ledgends is a great game on the DC, but it doesn't support the VGA adapter (or so it says).  I have been able to do the above switch hack and got it to work, but it seems to take a couple tries until it works.

Most games runs in vga mode (Last Blade 2 is the only example I can think of off hand that doesn't run on my vga box).  For those games that require the VGA/TV switch trick, you can actually create a backup that will boot to vga.  It's a long process I'm not gonna go into here, but basically you backup your dreamcast game, then go in and edit a specific string, which results in a direct boot to vga (Still boots fine for other video modes as well).  Who knows why the publishers didn't allow for vga out in these games.

Can you guys shout out some links, or give more details on how to fool the VGA converter? I bought Plasma Sword a while back, which isn't compatible, and I want to try it but don't want to pull the DC out of my cab.

Lilwolf: Get the DC while you still can. There are some absolutely brilliant games for it that can be had dirt cheap now. HOTD2 works great on the 21" monitor in my cab, no calibration problems or anything. Plus, I've got some great Capcom fighters, (Marvel vs Capcom 2, Capcom v SNK, Street Fighter III, Power Stone), the Crazy Taxi games rock, Shenmue, Jet Grind Radio, jeez, can't even remember everything I have, and there's a big list I'm still hunting for. A DC in a cab is good fun and looks real pretty.

I don't know about you, but my Gauntlet Legends boots up just FINE in VGA box mode...  and it looks SWEET!

the only game I've had a problem with is GunBird II...  but if I can do the tv/vga switch thing like you're talking about, it should be fine.  :-)

I don't understand why Dave_K thinks that FuncoLand/GameStop has $39 Dreamcasts, though...  unless pricing is different wherever he's from...  In Metro Detroit, used Dreamcasts are going for $69 right now.  <sigh>

I live in San Jose California, and the Software Etc here was selling them for $39 used ($49 new).  Sega offically dropped the price for new ones to $49, so if you are paying $69 (for used?) you are getting ripped off.  Or maybe they were flying off the shelves at that price, and the stores starting jacking up the prices?  I haven't looked prices recently...but I bought mine about 9 months ago at $39.

Could also be that you are buying a "bundle" like the DC that comes with a bunch of emulated saturn games?

I've heard that the prices are going up since the demand is increasing.

but this should be interesting in that next month, both xbox and ps2 are suppost to drop in price to 200 bucks
