I'm almost of the opinion that we should just start recommending 3 Ghz for Pac-Man and those of us who have a clue can just quietly save our money. Fact seems to be that no one WANTS to believe that 400 and 500 mhz computers run older versions of Mame full speed. They don't WANT to believe it because they download the current version of Mame, and then immediately load up Cruisin' Usa or UMK3.

Yeah pretty much if your hard disk is the original that came with your system, and you haven't had to replace it, or reinstall your OS,  you should be able to run MAME.

We have to realize new people are finding mame and this forum, these questions are going to keep comming every so often, it does get old but embrace new people intersted in arcades and Mame.

How about a sticky?

We have had plenty of stickies about it. It is useless, it doesn't matter, because every spyware laden newbie on earth downloads the latest version of Mame and then tries Mortal Kombat first, followed by Cruisin' Usa and finishing up with Area 51 and then thinks that they OBVIOUSLY need a hyperexpensive computer for Mame.

I think the problem lies there.  If the MAME devs simply stripped all the Cruisn, Mortal Kombat ("lets switch the C for a K and be Kool - who needs playability?") and Killer Instinct games, 99% of these questions would never appear.

Ditto for anything 3D too.

Back in my day, we didn't have bootable CD Rom drives! We didn't even have CD Roms! We have 5 1/4 inch floppies and WE LIKED IT! When Bill Gates (illegedly) said '640k should be enough for anyone" we agreed. We had to configure our own IRQs and modems went all the way up to 4800 baud.

-and we had to walk uphill in snow both ways. ;)

Seriously, the minimum hardware requirements for running a modern OS these days is more than is necessary for running MAME. If you can run XP, you should be able to play Space Invaders.

Actually, THAT is part of the problems. Quite a few of those newbs with speed issues are running XP on hardware near minimum requirements.

Currently, I plan to use my speedy 300MHz AMD for my MAME cab (v 0.36).  I used to play the classics from the golden era on my 486 66.  Anyone remember Sparcade?  That was one speedy emulator!

I have had it installed on all my computers up till the last.  Mainly because of Alcon / Slap fight emulation was smoother then mame... (ok, up until I started using triplebuffer... I know I know...)

I'm too lazy, but someone should post something like the following for all variations of processor speeds in this thread so it can be found in a user search (IF something crazy like that were to occur)

A 250 mhz intel will run mame
A 300 mhz intel will run mame
A 333 mhz intel will run mame
A ..... etc, etc.

Does it make sense instead stating that a 200MHz PC is fast enough for MAME, a project be started to sort out what games are playable with a minimum PC configuration?  That way, if someone wants to play a specific game, they can look to see if their PC is succifient...

This is HIGHLY dependent on Mame version. In general though ignore all Mame versions newer than .70 if you are running hardware under 1ghz, dropping back to around .55 for a 500mhz or less.

I ran .63 with a P3 @ 866MHz with 512MB of RAM, and (to my knowledge) I was able to play every game available in that version.

Actually, .59 runs quite nicely on a 450mhz PC...

Yes, that should have run everything in that version full speed, maybe one or two exceptions (STUN Runner comes to mind, and was Prop Cycle in mame yet at that point?).

Most "exception" games are analog anyway, and not trackballs either.

.59 should be fine on that hardware, I just recommend .55 because I have done extensive testing with that version.

I understand that this is a moving target.  With each new release of Mame, the hardware specifications would change.  It would make sense to start now with the current version and keep track of what games are playable on a set of given hardware specifications.  Then this list would update with each major relase of MAME...  If nothing is ever done to address this, then the MAME community can expect daily questions about what kind of computer do I need to run MAME...

Been done - softof - http://benchmark.mameworld.net/

Now to give a flippant response - TerryD - Please set-up MAME 0.96u1, this is 5661 rom-sets.  Play every game for 30 seconds and write down the framerate.  This is only 47.1 hours of gameplay time (plus however long it takes you to select and start and stop the games and enter the results).  Now you know what your machine can do.  But you probably should also buy the hardware and set-up and test on five or six other machines, so we know what older hardware will do, cutting edge hardware will do, etc.  And be sure to get this done in two weeks b/c there'll be a new MAME out by then.  Of course by the time you get all the roms for 0.97, 0.98 will be out before you start testing. . .
It's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go. - R. Travis.

Ever think that some people want to play UMK3 as one of the main games on a cab?

sorry, but i dont see the issue with people asking if there hardware is going to work..

Sure if your building a clasics cab with a few older games, a 133 would be fine, but KI isnt going to be running on there any time soon..

Maybe since you seem to be one of the people more 'pissy' why dont you write up a list of min hardwar specs for everything in mame..

Been done - softof - http://benchmark.mameworld.net/

That one's my baby.  Th problem with it is the fact that it's static, and that people can't add stuff for themselves.

I'm in the process of knocking together something database driven so people can add their own results.  As mentioned, with the "moving target" of MAME, it will mean you can sort your results by a prticular version, and know you're comparing apples with apples.

I've kindly asked the Mameworld kids for database access, but they haven't returned any of my emails.  So I amy be looking to piggyback of my work's host until these guys can give me what I need.

Anyways, I'm hoping it meets the needs of people a little better after the rewrite.  That, and I can finally keep it up to date with minimal effort for a change! :)

Or why don't people learn to search a forum before posting the same question for the umpteenth time.  I know you are one of the "a forum is for asking questions, so do what you want" people.. but that is flawed reasoning IMHO.

This has been asked, and asked to death.  It's also been answered to death.  If you want to play Cruisin... you can't.  If you want to play UMK3 or KI or things like that... it is ALREADY KNOWN what is needed.

There is no need to pop on here and make your first post on the board "OMG WILL I BE ABLE TO RUN KI ON THIS!!!!!one!  OMGBBQ  I need it, tell me please"  when you can take 15 seconds and search to find your answer. Or read a sticky. Or a FAQ.  Or probably at least one post on the front page at any given point in time.

Search, SUCKS, i tried it.. and ive had none of my questions answered by it, ive googled in fear of pissing of the people here because they whine every time someone posts a question thats been asked..

I've stayed out of this because it is a dead horse thread, but my first search for requirements to run UMK3 yielded 5 results that answer the question for UMK3.

Asking the questions is not so much a problem, IF those asking the question would take the time to try first. The big "BEFORE ASKING FOR HELP, PLEASE READ THIS" would be a good place to start.

I have no problem with "I've read the stickies and searched the forums, but I can't find the answer". I doubt anybody else here does either, particularly those people whom you call ---Deutsche Frankfurters---, since they answer more questions and help more people than anybody else, including you and me.

Cheers.

honestly, some of you guys need to just stop being elitests and help the new guys..

How much better do we have to point? It's stickied at the top... its the third damn post.

I don't see how we are being ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- or elitist when the answers to all of these questions are stickied.  Sorry bud...but you could find ALL of these answers if the n00bs simply click the third thread from the top... ya know...the one that says "CLICK BEFORE ASKING QUESTIONS"

If these people are too lazy/blind/illiterate/ignorant to click on that post and do a bit of reading and research for themselves, why should we have to answer the same questions over and over again.

People like helping those who first try to help themselves, its the same everywhere.  Go to a computer forum and ask "Is Intel or AMD better?"  or to a car forum and ask "What car should I get so I can go the fastest?" and see if you don't get teh same types of answers.

For the record I think the search function works fine. Sure you have to invest some time, but the answers to almost everything are there if the time is taken to look.

However, this is a dynamic hobby and things do change so asking for help can sometimes bring a better solution/answer than what can be found in older threads.

Everyone should also try and remember the "excitement" days when this was all absolutely new and to be honest, a little overwhelming. You can hardly blame the newbie for asking some silly stuff in the heat of their enthusiasm.

Living the delusional lifestyle.

Because the Internet is full of lazy/blind/illiterate/ignorant people. This forum is no exception. And it ain't just newbies.

Does a math teacher get angry with his new students for not knowing the things he taught his class from the previous semester?

For those of us who have been on this forum for a while, it's easy to see a progression of sorts as we learn new things.

Just think of the newbie as you were. Their point of reference is just like yours when you got in to the hobby. They haven't seen the progression on this forum and haven't seen arcade emulation evolve as we have.

So have some empathy and attempt to see this hobby through the eyes of a new guy.

Search, SUCKS, i tried it.. and ive had none of my questions answered by it

There you go guys.  He's tried it, it didn't work for him, therefore it sucks.  Case closed.

Talk about an elitist attitude!  Here, Mr Search Sucks:

http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php?action=search2

Several replies, including one specifically titled "Killer Instinct Requirements", and I'm sure I could find at least one reply for all the stuff you claim "can't be answered" here.  Just because YOU can't figure it out, doesn't mean something sucks, doesn't mean the search is broke, and more likely, points to someone who wants spoon-feeding.  There's nothing wrong with spoon-feeding someone answers - if they've taken even a cursory look around and don't know where to look.  We'd point them to the search and some pointers for searching.  There are thread-upon-thread's to this around here, and I'm 100% positive that even in the forums you help run, these types of responses are posted there as well.

The search works.  Period.  Put some time into thinking about what you want to know, and maybe you'll find your results.  You not being able to figure it out makes me chuckle to myself, because all your answers seem to be the "Here's how I do it" route, and yet in 5 seconds, I was able to get answers using the search that you state unequivocally SUCKS!  Maybe PEBKAC is rearing it's ugly head in your instance, but seeing common questions that have ambiguous answers such as this thread's title REQUIRE a "search" answer, because the people that don't know won't get answers from people OTHER than what's already out there, and would have found if they'd simply used the sucky search.

Telling a new guy to search for an answer IS considered "helping a new guy", because they just may have never seen it, or would PREFER to see several pages in an old thread telling them exactly what they need, instead of creating several NEW pages that still do the exact same thing - nothing.

As for the math teacher, what would he do?  He'd walk the person through the problem (point them to the search (memory recall) function).  If, after several weeks, the teacher finds the student continuing to miss the problem, he'd question if they actually knew the concepts (whether or not they actually searched the forum) and perhaps drop them to an easier or different class (request that they read a few threads from those searches).

Nobody was being pissy, Soaper, until you started calling people ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- and elitists.  Perhaps you taking this thread the wrong way might lead you to an understanding of how people feel after seeing the same threads and questions over and over, but you'll have to get over your attitude that we're all ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- and elitists, and you seem to have that opinion of some of us pretty well set in stone.  Sitting here calling people ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- and elitists tells me you're full of crap when you say you did something out of fear of pissing people off in here.  Your eyes have filled up and your hair is starting to turn brown you're so full of it.

Lastly, if you can't understand the joke of the thread, maybe you should stay out of it and not comment on it, since "not helping" doesn't apply to you.

We need a newbie sub forum, of course newbie probably wouldn't post in the right forum ;)
I think the best solution would be to not answer (or even read) the post if your sick of dealing with it. Someone else will answer it that has not tired of the question. Who knows maybe not answering right away will give the newbie time to search and find the answer themselves. ::)
By the way shouldn't the word ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- be auto censored?  :D

Used to help run a car forum, and people asked the stupid same 1 liners over and over, we answered them.. On the torrent forum im helping run, people have and will keep asking stupid questions, we will keep answering them..

why? because we dont want to push away people from the places..

If you honestly give 2 shits about this place, and if you know the answers, you would help people, and be a bit more friendly about it..

We don't push people away either.  There have been very few threads here where people say "get out n00b" or similar.  Instead, we will offer advice to search, read FAQs, and point people in the right direction.  That's not pushing people away.. it's teaching them.  You want to spoon feed everything to people which is fine, but not what most people prefer.  I'd rather tell people where they can get information, because more often than not, those resources will answer 20 other questions that they have.

As far as your forums, good for you, but that is NOT the norm.  I read quite a few forums, and this is prevalent everywhere. I only know of one forum where people truly rail on each other, and that's only because the forum is practically meant for insulting people haha.  Anywhere else, you will have "THE QUESTION" that always gets asked, and it gets frustrating to answer it 3 times every day.  We put up stickies, they get ignored.  People write and post FAQs, and people choose to just ask anyway, even if their question is number 1 in the FAQ.

Tone down your high and mighty attitude cuz you think we should bow down to help people who can't look 3 posts down where the same question is asked AND ANSWERED.  This board is the most helpful forum I've ever been a part of, and also the friendliest.

Telling people where to get information is not "pushing them away"

I read that thread, and don't see how its bashing.  Peale posted a link to the MAME faq, and many other people just seconded the fact that it was asked quite a number of times.  I saw that the OP took it a bit personally, but he was also able to fix his problem himself, thus totally eliminating the need for the thread in the first place.

The lesson is, these boards are a GREAT RESOURCE, but it doesn't hurt to try to do things for yourself first.  You learn more that way IMHO.  Try to figure it out, then try to read up on it if you can't get it to work, then by all means ask people who know.  But the thing is, people (including myself) always have a feeling that their problem is the first time something has happened.  Truth is.. it rarely is.  If you take the time to look around, you'll get a lot of info.

I will never see "you can find your answer at xxxxxx" as a bash.  Giving people resources help them more in my opinon than saying "the answer is 5"  That's not how you learn, and as people have said, this hobby has a ton of info to learn about, and a lot of the fun is actually taking it all in.

If you read all the way to the end of that post you will see the original poster, far from being "chased away", saying he was glad he had made the post and asking another (much better) question...which was answered in the very next post. So, I gotta say...bad example.  ::)

Anyway, I haven't been a reqular poster here in over a year...upon returning I don't find the board has "gone sour" at all. On the contrary, it is still the friendliest, most helpfull board I have ever belonged to.

I do remember the day I first found this board...and I remember spending the next three days reading hundreds of posts BEFORE asking a question (of course I'm not twelve  ;D ). I did have a few slap fights with some members early on (Howard  ;) ) but I learned even from those...and I gained respect for those who were here bofore me.

So, I see nothing wrong with telling someone to RTFM and as long as you tell them where TFM is you ARE helping!

Just my 2 cents--opinions vary!

i think ray_slup said it best, just don't answer. Ignore the post and go on. Without it we end up in these overly long debates that just break down into "your ugly" and "your dumb" replies.
If you can't control yourself and feel the need to respond with RTFM do as Spaced Invader mentioned and link to it in the post.

Finally , the FAQ's need to be cleaned up and streamlined IMHO. Some of the threads are really long with bickering and contradictions.
This will never be answered fully. No one has the same setup that I have. So me saying "I have X processor w/ Y HDD and Z operating system and I can run all games" doesn't mean that joe bagodonuts can go and get XYZ and expect to run the same. For all we know joe's pc is swamped w/ virii and adware. Which of course will cause joe to come here and say "i looked at this thread and it said XYZ can play everything , but my computer with XYZ wont!"

poop i say!

Which of course will cause joe to come here and say "i looked at this thread and it said XYZ can play everything , but my computer with XYZ wont!"

poop i say!

Shut up ugly.

EDIT:   You're dumb

:)  :P

Or how about people just stop being such ---Deutsche Frankfurters--- about it and point these people in the right direction..

Search, SUCKS, i tried it.. and ive had none of my questions answered by it, ive googled in fear of pissing of the people here because they whine every time someone posts a question thats been asked..

honestly, some of you guys need to just stop being elitests and help the new guys..
Okay, I started typing this reply and then realized I hadn't read Page 2 of the thread (just as well, as it turns out).

Sorry, Soapboy, but I agree with pointdablame here.

If you try to search on AVG's forum you will get more of an idea of where I am going - (25 threads on any common question- sometimes with answers, most often not).

Search works pretty well.  It would work better if anyone used it.  What I mean is -

Let's say I start a thread on minimum PC requirements for MAME.  Lots of members will post useful info.  It will come up in a search (especially if you remember "Hey Soapboy said something about that so let me look up threads by him.")

Now User B doesn't search and posts the same question.  The other members either answer it or refer him back to my thread.

Still not too bad, but now a search will bring up TWO threads, one of which has no useful info.

Now USER C posts the same question in a new thread.  Members are tired now and just post "Been asked before, search the forum."

Eventually, you do a search and you come up with 40 threads on the same subject, 20 of which just tell you to search the forum (which you just did), and the other 20 that have (mostly) duplicate information.

See where I'm going . . .?

<EDIT - Added>
It would also help if newbies would name the threads better.  Soapboy's "newbie-bashing" post is a pretty good example - it's a thread that I had posted a 8-paragraph reply to about a week before and asked that it be stickied.  Of course, I think the thread I answered was titled "MAME Questions" so might not come up in a search of OK screens.</edit>

Amen SB, lets start a new thread,"Tommy and SB's answers to questions asked many times, its ok we wont yell at you"  ;D  ;D

Excellent suggestion. Too bad the newbies won't read it. ;)
