Why are these on e-bay?

Anyone know why these analog joysticks have been showing up on e-bay so much lately?  Do they work with Mame?

Thanks...

I haven't seen that particular one on Ebay much lately.  Yes, you can use it with Mame.  Just need an interface board such as an A Pac or Dave's AKI board.  Could also hack your own using the right kind of USB controller such as what is commonly used to hack Star Wars controllers or T2 guns.

At my local arcade there is a Sega F18 fighter simulator that uses this stick.  I think this is also the stick in the Star Wars Trilogy arcade game.  It didn't seem like anything special.

Would there be any advantage to using one of these over a regular analog PC Flightstick (other than it is easier to mount in a CP)?

Depending on the PC stick you'd be comparing it with, the Happ stick would be heavier duty with steel shaft built for an arcade environment.  I've heard of several people using PC sticks and breaking them because they couldn't handle the stress.  Also the feel of the stick should be compared.  I've got a couple of cheap Saitek's and while they work they just don't have a great feel.

Just for clarity, the auction (isn't mine) is for the PC VERSION of the Happs Analog Stick.

It comes with a gameport adapter and 100K pots.

No additional board needed

If somebody's thinking of buying that, I've got one I'd let go for $75.  It's the older version of the same stick, as seen in Minwah's post here.  The only difference between the old onew and the new ones is that the new ones don't have the big white centering mechanism on the bottom.  Mine includes the "Pot Amp" board Minwah mentions.  I picked up a few of these a while back, and just don't see myself needing all of them.

They do feel much, much more "Arcade-ish" than a PC joystick.  You aren't left with the feeling that you're using a toy instead of the real thing.

What condition is it in?

Oh, I never could figure out what your Avatar was.  I thought it was a gold statue of a head kind of like in the opening sequence of Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Now I see that it is a Robot (moving to the left).

On page 310 of my trusty Happs catalog, 95-0392-00 is the PC version (which is $220+, basic is $195).  The auctioner C&Pd from the website, but failed to make the distinction.

And ... yep ... might need a gameport/USB converter (looking at things, I would)... I stated things rather poorly.

Cheers

Now I see that it is a Robot (moving to the left).

It is in "used but working just fine" condition.  Came out of a Cybersled game, and shows the kind of wear you'd expect on a stick that spent any time in an arcade environment.  The small portion of the shaft that's visible between the grips and the base has some rust, as do the screws that hold the grips on.  The handle shows some wear.  No cracks, or any other such major damage, just needs some clean-up.

As for my avatar, you can join the multitude that thought it was some kind of flaming pirate skull thing in this thread: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,34703.0.html.  It did look worse before, as the new forum software started re-sizing my old 70x70 jpg to 80x80.  I fixed that, but it's still pretty lousy.  At this point, I've just been leaving it out of sheer bloody-mindedness.

So what are these, older versions?

Nope, those are the new style, too.  The old ones have a big spring wrapped around a white plastic piece on the bottom.

Guess I'd better go take some pictures.

Note:  that's not a crack near the middle screw hole on the grip- it's a piece of scotch tape somebody put on there.

well, one of our own is bidding on the analog trigger stick with the guard, so unless you really want it, don't bid against him.  i forget who it is, but it's one of us.

What is the purpose of that Pirate Skull emblem on the base of the stick in the first picture??? (j/k)

The auction is mine and has been corrected.  I admit to the shoddy C&P job- it was rushed.  The stick has 5k pots so it is not PC-ready without adding an interface.   The two photos show everything that is included.  This stick is solid and quite heavy.  I've got a little one on the way and too many projects already to ever have time to mess with this stick, despite the best of intentions. :)

Also, I was outbid on the one I was bidding, I will not be raising, so don't let my previous bid hold you back.

Zaphod-

Sorry, didn't know that auction was from a BYOAC member, or I wouldn't have offered mine up like that.

I wish more BYOAC members had ebay handles that matched their BYOAC names- would save us bidding against one another, undercutting one another, etc.  (I'm "didyoujustcallmekremmit, as "kremmit" was taken.)

I agree but sometimes names are already taken.
