I have, but only when they were attached through a cheap USB hub.  Upgrading the hub fixed it!

Are they connected directly to the computer or connected through a hub?

they are connected directly to the computer. also, just to be a little clearer, if i restart the computer the spinner and tb will still work. it is only when i turn off all the power to the cabinet/pc and turn it back on that does not recognize anything plugged into the usb ports.

Do you know what chipset your motherboard uses?  There might be an updated USB driver available.

i know it is a amd athlon 1800+. i dont know what motherboard it is. i bought this pc 2 years ago at best buy. i just replaced the hd with a bigger 80 gig one. i never had this machine in a cabinet until now so this is the first time i have left usb devises plugged into it.
