Possible to make a LCD marquee?
« on: April 30, 2005, 05:02:25 pm »
I was wondering if anyone has thought about or tried to make their marquee out of possibly 2 lcd screens side by side and have it display the marquee of the game you are playing? Sounds like a cool idea.

Nope.  Or at least doubt it cuz it would be praised like crazy.  There was a thread about doing it but ideas changed due to prices.

A few people have tried different things.  But finding one that will fit is a problem.

I thought those digital pictures might be good... but they are on the small side.

But find a good wide LCD would look cool... but might cost a pretty penny...

In addition to the proper dimensions on the display, you'd also need a bunch of high res marquee scans to display on it...  You wouldn't be able to just use the MAME marquee pack images.  Getting those together would take far more effort than getting the display up and running, I'd think...

Yeah I figured maybe 2 lcd's next to each other and some kinda gizmo to display it on the 2 screens together. Most of those marquee images would probably look like crap on there.

That too, with two screens side-by-side Im sure it wouldnt look as nice as you planned, unless you strip off the case and just put the screens right beside eachother.  They would have to be identical screens though, because you would totally notice a difference otherwise....

I'd like to see someone make a marquee with one of those LED light screens that can light up with like, 4 colors and do stuff like the scrolling text or the animation of Pac-Man chasing a ghost. I'm sure you've seen them at variouse places. If you could get one the right size, it would make an awesome marquee I think.

I wanted to make a marquee out of LEDs to show the high scores and the game being played at that time.  I've now realized that would be too hard to map, but I can create graphics of each game to scroll by.  The signs that I have are too large for a marquee, but I can make a custom sign out of the LED modules.  The modules in one of my signs are 8X8, so you can pretty much make any size you want by linking them together.

The software I have allows you to select the number of rows/columns when it boots up.  You also have to select the color for each pixel or you can import from a *.bmp file.  Pretty cool, I just haven't had the time to sit down put it all together.
